Saw something mentioned last week about "stay tuned for a big announcement from the club early next week!" or something along those lines.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about here has whatever that announcement was been announced yet? Obviously if it was about Buddy it would've been done so by now though.

Wasn't that about Fantasia?

Watching footy classified and Caro mentioned that John Ralph categorically said on Fox Footy yesterday that Buddy will be at GWS next year. Who knows but lets not celebrate too much just yet.

Im convinced that we need to move heaven and earth to keep him after what I saw at Etihad on Friday night.
It may be stating the obvious but he's ahead of at least 30 other blokes that we need to keep on our list. We will go backwards very quickly without him particularly with the little to no compensation we will receive for him.

Got my fingers crossed but the way he played on Friday night and the enjoyment he showed I think his mind is made up either way. The man played like the weight of the world had truly been lifted from his shoulders.

According to Jon Ralph yesterday he stated CATEGORICALLY that Buddy is going to GWS. He would know more than us I guess. What we want and what we get are two very different things! He will break some hearts when he goes..:(

Think the worst. Then when the opposite happens, you'll be doubly excited.

Or, if it doesn't, well, you'll miss him even more.

And Hutchy also stated that Buddy would be staying, Hutchy is reasonably close to Pickers.

People in the media (majority) are purely voicing their own opinions based on the numbers being thrown around. Fact of the matter is that at this point in time there is no offer from GWS and there is no guarantee of one. Don't you think they would have tabled an offer by now?

GWS have spoken to Pickers but they are not convinced that Buddy wants to go anywhere, and until they are convinced there will be no offer.

I was convinced he was going a month ago, I'm now near on convinced he is staying, and from what I hear the club is pretty much convinced of the same.

Know something we don't perhaps Grizz ???? :)

Nah, just remembered something a particularly cynical friend of mine used to say, which prompted me to post. Goes like this: 'Always think the worst of someone you've just met, then at least they have the capacity to surprise you. It rarely happens, but it gives you a nice surprise when it does."

As a side note to footy classified tonight did anyone else like what they saw on the list of our players 26yo and you ger who we have to build our list around for the next generation (should Buddy stay)?

Franklin
Roughead
Rioli
Gunston
Bruest
Birchall
Lewis

Still a pretty strong core there

Distinct lack of defenders and mids though.

As long as Buddy gets us over the line come the big dance on Sept 28, he can go with my best wishes (if that is what he wants)
I will even pack his bags for him and drive him to Skoda Stadium myself.

I hope he doesn't, but if he helped us to another flag, how could you begrudge him?

You left out Hill who they also named.

Defenders? Currently have Shoenmakers, Birchall, Suckling, Duryea, Gibson, Stratton, Litherland, Kelly, Cheney and Spangher, (Lake looks good for another 2 years IMO). This area probably has too much depth, and unfortunately something will have to give in this department at the end of the year given the way you have to cut 3-4 players each year.

Mids: Currently we have Mitchell, Hodge, Burgoyne, Sewell, Savage, Shiels, Lewis, Sewell, Rioli, Whitecross, Puopolo, Smith, Simpkin, Puopolo, Hill, Breust who run through the "midfield". Anderson will be best 22 from next year, and Woodward (fingers crossed) and Hallahan will push a cash for selection as well. Langford will be upgraded, and is a longer term prospect.

Young key position players: Grimley, O'Brien, Brand, plus Heatherly and Shem banked in on our list.

Combine these with a very astute list management team which has made us stronger every turn over period by adding a mix of quality youth and also more mature players, and I can't see why the coming periods will be any different, I'm not sure how we could be managing our list better for both the short, medium and long term.

Correct.....and that's what will being us undone unless some serious change isn't implemented next year.

Really? I find this surprising. What serious changes need to be made to our list?

Anderson naturally will come in to best 22, and he's a fantastic young midfield prospect. I rate him very highly. He looks ready made, already very solid inside, and can also win the ball outside as well.

Guys like Breust, Rioli, Whitecross, Hill, Smith, Shiels, Simpkin, Savage, Puopolo will continue to improve as a group not decline. Lewis is now peaking as a player, and could prosper as a midfielder if we required him to play more there.

People focus on Mitchell's age, but ignore he is in career best form. I struggle how that will be a negative next year. Hodge isn't finished with just yet either.

I see Burgoyne being able to play as well next year as this year.

Sewell is one people seem to be almost willing to fall out, but this year he will play a significant role, and if next year he really does struggle for a spot we have natural replacements at a really good stage of their development (already mentioned Anderson, and Hallahan will be kicking the door down for more game time. Woodward is a real wildcard, as people forget he was rated likely to play very early even in his first year).

I see our list in a position to naturally introduce new blood without needing to make any changes to do the personal we already have. Our depth is great this year, but IMO it will actually be stronger again in 2014 given the number of guys still improving on our list. We will continue to bring in talented players, and also trade aggressively if anything adjustments need to be made. This is the great thing about free agency, we can top up for free (Simpkin, Spanger) and keep our draft picks. We are also good traders, and might use our first rounders for quality young talent (Gunston).

Yep, and what was Hutchy's reply .......
Yeah, John Ralph, pffft
Garry Lyon nearly fell of his chair

I was more talking about 2014 and beyond, Put simply, Our Elite midfielders are Mitchell 31 Sewell 29 Hodge 29 and Lewis 27, this is the same nucleus of our midfield from 2008. Then throw in Burgoyne 30-31....Once you past 30, it can turn very dark very quickly. This is some supreme elite talent the envy of the AFL. We simply cannot run these players into the ground and have them all retire within two years of each other, they have to be fazed out slowly because they will leave massive holes.

Guys like Breust, Rioli, Whitecross, Hill, Smith, Shiels, Puopolo

These guys are part time midfielders and wingmen, who are the players that are going to form the nucleus of our new midfield? the only player in this group that has shown anything near the level of talent compared to our famous quartet has been Rioli, but his body will not allow him to play significant midfield time. Your replacing elite talent with just good players.

-Lewis is a very good player, he should be elite.

-Hallahan- is a direct replacement for Sewell, but seeing as though he is out of contract he just may leave for guaranteed game time which he isn't currently getting. it will be the start of his fourth year on an AFL list.

-Jed is a beauty, potentially elite, he can be our core midfielder by 2015.

-Woodward, has just done 2 knee recos, missed 2 years of football in his development years, he will be up against it in both body and mind....

We have to target some serious young gun mids for a sustained success at the top.

HAWTHORN will target one of Greater Western Sydney's most promising midfielders, Taylor Adams, to help offset the potential loss of free agent Lance Franklin.

Adams has put off contract talks until season's end and is understood to have attracted varying degrees of interest from every Victorian club.

Adams, a hardball specialist from Geelong Falcons, has excelled in his second season at the Giants, where he ranks fourth in clearances this season.

In the event Franklin leaves, Hawthorn will have about $1 million salary cap space to chase Adams, among others.

The Hawks need to find eventual replacements for veteran onballers such as Brad Sewell, 29, Luke Hodge, 29, and Sam Mitchell, 30.

The Hawks are busy preparing end-of-season trade plans if Franklin departs to the Giants on a mega-deal.

I'm not going to deny this......I have a lot of love for Adams, an aggressive contested ball winning mid with pace. Even if keep Franklin we should be going full throttle to gain him.

I would go as far as giving up our first round pick and Suckling for him....that's how highly I rate him.

When you put them in to groups like "Old" "bit part" "second tiered" and "young" and then analyse these groups individually you can put a negative spin on each of them, which I've seen many posters do when looking at our list.

If you put the whole list of players together without segregating them, its a great mix of veterans, second tiered players, and youth which is set to naturally evolve over the next couple of seasons. Puts us in a very good position for 2014/2015 while we are in our window. I've been waiting since Clarkson took over to be in this position, so it surprises to me to see posters so concerned about "the future" when our time is now, and our list is in fantastic shape for now.

Worrying three-five years ahead is pointless as its based on all sorts of assumptions about how our young players and second year players will develop, and takes in no consideration of the 10-15 players we will naturally add to the list through free agency, trading and through the national and rookie drafts. I'm pretty confident we're in good hands, and if we need players we will go after players like we have every year. Look how well we managed our backline after losing Croad in 2008 by adding Stratton, Gibson, Shoenmakers, Lake, and now Duryea. We couldn't of imagined these guys back in 08 as none of them were at the club then.

I can't fault our list management in recent times, so I see no reason to stress while we are trying to win the 2013 premiership.
