Buckemenico - I don't know why him seeking the best deal for himself means he is not ever going to be a club captain. He is already part of the leadership team - are we going to dump him from that as well. Some people's expectations of players and loyalty are interesting to say the least.

Everybody's got a plausible Buddy theory except for me and my monkey.

Talk about synchronicity, I just changed me signature to one with a monkey reference.

While I think most of her stuff is irrelevant and a bore, in this case, it works quite well for us.

Quite clearly she is right when she says that Buddy is holding the club to ransom. In the past, she has said that he is being greedy and selfish. Again, she is right. Buddy has brought this on himself and his brand has been irreparably damaged. For starters, regardless what happens, he will never captain our club.

Hawthorn made Buddy into the player he is. Look at how Guerra was let go from Port Adelaide and St Kilda, and yet Hawthorn have turned him into a 250-game player. Amazing. I cannot think that Richmond or any other fringe club would have been able to get Buddy to prosper in the way he has.

Also, look how Gibson turned out from North Melbourne to Hawthorn

Here's an idea...how about we hand Buddy a blank piece of paper and ask him to write down what he feels he is worth or how much he wants. Then we agree to it BUT $10K is to taken off for every behind he scores this year...$20K for out if bounds on the full in the forward 50.
Hope he doesn't write a number that is 100% of our salary cap then lol

omg what a good idea!!!!!!!!!!! wish I had thought of it..............

St kilda fans and mark harvey would give a knowing smile

Heyo_O
Lyon got a better job offer. Did he ever say he didn't? In fact, he was very open and honest about it.
Long bow to draw on that one mate.
I am comfortable he wont be going to Freo.

Franklin Leaving or Not

Hawthorn is generally a club that is very well planed and organised. So, I think we have also planned for Franklin's likely (not definite) departure.

1- We allow a press conference to go that shows the Club is doing all it can to keep him and if he leaves it will be Franklin's fault and not the Clubs. He wants the money and in Franklin's case the money is extraordinary. For me that is fine. Clubs don't give loyalty and so the players should be able to exercise the same. Ablett still loves Geelong but now he can have the money as well. He will be welcomed back to Kardinia Park when he retires and they hold their Premiership reunions. Franklin will be welcomed back as well.

2- Is it just a coincidence that our KPP stocks have/will have 4 names added to it. O'Brien, Brand, Heatherley and Tatupu.

3- The Hawks will use the Restricted Free Agenecy of Franklin to extract the best trade deal. I am confident we will match the offer but with every intention of trading him to the Club that wants him. We will say something like "you cannot hold a player when his heart isn't in it". Once again placing the blame on the player and not the Club. Selling the message. It is only via a normal trade can we hope to get something close to his actual value. GWS will have Pick 1 or 2 and also some youngsters who would prefer to be in Melbourne and Hawthorn is an appealing 'destination; club.

4- Do not listen to any team that says they are not interested. Fremantle are - but GWS really is. The AFL do want the GWS to be a high profile club in western Sydney as it links to televison rights which is the great cash source. At this stage profile matters more than success. Folau was for profile (with little chance of success), Franklin is profile plus a little bit of success. The AFL will assist GWS as it assists the AFL. As for Hawthorn the AFL doesn't care about us or other existing clubs as much as it does about the new ones. Our impact on AFL revenue is insgnificant when compared to the what GWS and the Gold Coast can provide.
The last paragraph is all about what is rotten in AFL and dilution of the game. Its why we need a new start and a new AFL .

Maybe we should take on the ultimate challenge and get Tambling when he gets delisted by Adelaide later this year... Now that would be ironic if you could turn him around...
Mature Age Rookie?

Now that is Win-Win!

Caro, obviously pissed off at how Cousins turned out after leaving richmond!! She has no credibility because she is biased towards her tiges!! Surely a team with so much lack of success deserves more of her attention, rather than her agenda to report on the mighty Buddwah!! who would of easily won coleman had he played 2 more games!! Her lack of quality is disturbing, and its lap dogs to muckraking like her that needs to be eradicated immediately!! The power of the pen never ceases to amaze, just write crap with no facts, stir the pot and sit back and watch all the shep lap it up and give it air time!!

Most sober article so far on the subject

I have afeeling budster is going to put in a ripper season this year

Hawthorn remains the only club to have made superstar forward and restricted free agent Lance Franklin a contract offer for 2014 and beyond.
Despite the comments of Greater Western Sydney's senior figures about possible interest in Franklin and speculation about whether he will stay with the Hawks, Franklin's manager Liam Pickering confirmed that no other club, besides Hawthorn, had made the forward any offer.
Pickering added that Franklin had not asked him to seek any offers from other clubs. The Hawks have put a long-term offer that the manager has called ''respectful'' - believed to be around $1 million a season over a minimum of four years. ''He has not got an offer from another club,'' Pickering said. ''He hasn't asked me to solicit an offer. At the moment, the only offer is from Hawthorn.''
The Hawthorn offer was made late in 2012. Franklin told the Hawks that he would be putting contract talks on hold until the end of the 2013 season back in December.

Despite Hawthorn's uncertainty about whether the game's most marketable and popular player will remain, Pickering has indicated that the Hawks remain in the box seat to retain Franklin, who, as Pickering said, has not asked his management to talk to other clubs - unlike Travis Cloke, who last year entertained offers from rival clubs before re-signing with the Magpies at season's end on a conditional five-year deal.
The exit of Hawthorn's highly regarded football operations manager, Mark Evans, who will replace Adrian Anderson as head of football at the AFL, has seen Hawthorn's head of recruiting Graham Wright assume responsibility for contract discussions for all players, meaning Wright will talk to Pickering if and when Franklin decides to begin talks.
Fremantle, initially speculated to be a suitor, has been at pains to say that it has not had Franklin in its sights, with coach Ross Lyon having told his Hawthorn counterpart Alastair Clarkson at the recent coaches' conference that the Dockers had not pursued or shown interest in the Hawk.
''I sought out Alastair and said, 'This is not us. Just to be really clear, just to let you know, so you don't have to worry, it is not us','' Lyon said this week.
''That's on the public record and that hasn't changed. I can't be any clearer than that.''
Hawthorn insiders have noted that the most-forgotten aspect of Franklin's situation is that he is a restricted free agent, which gives the Hawks the opportunity to match the best offer and retain him - or force him to seek a trade. If the AFL paid him a significant sum as a NSW ambassador or the like, this payment would not have to be matched - the Hawks would only need to match his football payments within the salary cap.
Hawthorn has respected Franklin's decision to put talks on hold and has not put pressure on him, but the club is also mindful that it would be better to have the situation clarified before season's end, given that Franklin's massive salary has a huge impact on the salary cap and it would need contingency plans for recruiting and list management in the event that he left.

Anyone else think that forcing a trade, by matching another club's offer, could be the most beneficial out for the future of our club? Having said this, we would have to legitimately match the offer, and IMHO would have to put too much faith in two of my least favourite people, Shady and Vlad!

Personally, I hope Buddy stays, but on the other hand, I would hate to get nothing in return.

They would be planning two strategies here:

The retention of Franko. This would be the priority. If he went to any other club he would make them significantly stronger. An acceptable contract will be more than just about money.

Secondly, a strategy if Franko goes. We will want to maximise our hand and return from the big fella. This means matching the proposed salary of any suitor and trading him on.

I believe that we want to retain Franko. But not at all costs - the integrity of our list and player management within the salary cap cannot and will not be compromised. He will receive a more than fair offer whcih befits his importance to the team and standing in the game. Plus that will be bundled up into a wholistic contract that looks after him in many ways. Yes, there's bound to be more clubs that will pay him more, but a bidding war isn't one we'll enter.

My last thought on this: we will give Franko a firm deadline well before the end of the season. If we need to initiate the second strategy that will require time to maximise his worth.

A problem I see with matching the salary to force the trade situation is that we're not guaranteed to be able to get a beneficial net result.

The club that made the offer we match may turn around and say they're not interested in giving up good players and/or picks for Franklin. They might've been counting on only paying him a huge chunk of their cap, not a huge chunk of their cap AND losing good players and picks as well.

Then we'd need to find another club willing to do a trade but it's unlikely there would be many willing to give up what we'd want for him while also taking on his massive new salary (which they obviously can't afford otherwise they would've offered it in the first place). Which means most likely any trade we make with any club would result in us paying a decent % of his salary from our own cap.

It's kind of at the point where Buddy is too expensive to be beneficial to anyone.

Not a good bet. You obviously have not seen his new goal kicking action. Very straight, very direct and very very deadly. Plus he spends a lot of time at training just on set shot goal kicking. The spearhead has been sharpened.

a lot of the free agency is the threat it mkes which can precipitate other deals

see lake to hawthorn

if bud was gws bound with the afls support then deals would be done, and hawks would be recompensed, the salary matching process may happen on the surface, but the outcome would have been agreed well before
