GEELONG star Steve Johnson and Hawthorn premiership heroes Luke Hodge and Sam Mitchell head the list of 62 unrestricted free agents announced by the AFL on Friday.

Geelong veterans Matthew Scarlett, Paul Chapman and Corey Enright are also on the unrestricted list, as are Brisbane Lions champions Jonathan Brown and Simon Black, West Coast skipper Darren Glass and St Kilda's Leigh Montagna.

They are all free to leave their clubs at the end of this season if they choose, without being traded or entering the NAB AFL Draft.

And some of the game's biggest names also feature among 19 restricted free agents, including Collingwood's Travis Cloke, Saint Brendon Goddard and Richmond's Brett Deledio.

Actually surprised Collingwood doesn't have more and didn't think about how many Coast would have.

Sorry about the nasty copypasta.

I think they got Collingwood wrong too. Cloke should be restricted and Ben Johnson unrestricted.

Bulldogs Free Agents are probably in no danger of being picked up. They're a lot more valuable to us then to any other team if you think about it, Hargrave is a solid rebounding tall that can provide a chop off and Minson is just a big and strong ruckman.

Since unrestricted free agents can move regardless of their salary offer, I wonder how many players that have not experienced flag success will go to a strong team to get that opportunity, without making a huge dent in their cap. On the same note, a team might take a pay cut just to get such a player to their club.

It's exciting but scary at the same time.

The Restricted Rule

A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is one of the top 25 per cent highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since reaching eight seasons of service. (restricted free agent)

The player is eligible to field offers from all rival AFL clubs.
If he wishes to change clubs, the player must decide on the best offer of his choice from one rival club.
His club has the right to match the presented offer.
If the club matches the offer, he may choose to remain with his original club, seek a trade or enter the Draft.
If the club does not or can not match the offer, the player can move to the new club of his choice.
His original club will receive a compensation pick for the loss of the player, on an AFL-determined formula to apply where clubs lose more free agents than they gain in any single transfer period.

Unrestricted Rule
A player has served eight or more seasons of AFL football at one club, is NOT one of the top 25 per cent highest-paid players at his club, and is now out of contract for the first time since reaching eight seasons of service. (unrestricted free agent)

His club does NOT have the right to match the presented offer, and the player can move AUTOMATICALLY to the new club of his choice.

A player has served ten or more seasons of AFL football at one club, has already come out of contract once in the period after serving his first eight or more seasons at his club, and is now out of contract. (Unrestricted free agent)

Goddard being a 'restricted' free agent is the one that caught my eye.

Ten years service (debut 2003), but presumably doesn't meet the fine print rules, about coming out of contract once past 8 years of service, prior to reaching the 10 years.

The debate relating to Goddard (and others) is that they signed contract extensions during, rather than after a season and therefore did not effectively come out of contract.

If that is correct it will, I assume, result in players delaying when they sign new contacts, which is surely detrimental to clubs and the players. It seems to me there is now a disincentive for players such as Cloke & Deledio to sign contracts mid-season.

Simon Black is another interesting one for me. Clearly still has plenty to offer and the Lions aren't keen on treating their old heroes very well..

Saints might need to do some work...they've got some currency that other clubs WOULD want!

They should probably be able to hold onto their restricted players, but Leigh Montagna's an interesting one. Probably got a good three or four seasons left in him, at least.

Might be one or two ambitious clubs that come sniffing. I don't know what his relationship is like with Ross Lyon, but he'd be very useful at the Dockers.

How long has Pavlich been at Freo?
Why is he not on the list?

Probably because he has a contract for 2013 already.

As an example from ours, being a 2002 draftee, Mackie would be on that list but doesn't appear because he has a long term contract that takes him through until the end of 2013.

Matt Rosa strikes me as the only one from West Coast

There was talk of him leaving last contract before re-signing.

Of the rest, I don't see either another club's attraction or a likelihood of moving at this stage. Perhaps Kerr, but you'd think a player wouldn't be leaving our club for a chance of premiership success. Had we still been at the bottom of the ladder, it might be more likely.

Oh yeah, he may still be under contract. I honestly don't know how long he has left on his contract but for obvious reasons, the free agency rule only applies to the long-time players coming out of contract.

Yeah I think he signed a 4 year deal.2 years ago.

contracted to 2014

Kerr's an interesting one. If he can play 20 odd games this year he may get some clubs calling. I would severely doubt that we would offer him close to what he is already on. What is it like 700k a year.

Cant see any of the big names leaving, I beleive this was mainly bought in for fringe players to get opportunities elsewhere without having to be traded or go through the draft. Every now and a big player will change but it really not that different from whats happened prior.

Hmmm just had a look at the list, I wonder is Sammy mitchell upset about being stripped of the captaincy ;)

He has been overpaid for awhile, I doubt even Kerr would be a bad enough bloke to leave considering the ground he has to make up.
