Mega Thread Freo say no to Buddy

I was under the impression all games were live on Fox.
There is an upside though from a FTA angle, with the club's profile outside of W.A being enhanced with Franklin playing.
It could even be what the broacasters prefer with scope for a bigger audience with Freo games.

My understanding was Fox will show live games where they can but when game times overlap they will choose the local teams into that state and put the others on delay. So many games for Freo are only on Fox with a significant delay if you live in Vic - unless they have switched systems and broadcast on multiple channels - Seppo??

Many FTA viewers might want to see more Freo games with Buddy playing but not sure the networks would still even choose to show say Freo Vs Geelong at Subi into Vic ahead of a 'Blockbuster' Richmond Vs Carlton game.

It is why people in Vic are mostly IMO fairly ignorant of Freo unless they have Foxtel - on FTA in Vic they would only see two or three games a year involving Freo (night games + Collingwood maybe).

I reckon FTA networks would hate it - could drive more Vics to get Foxtel instead.

All games are live on FOX except the GF. If there are two games playing at the same time they are on Fox Footy and Fox Sports 1 at the same time.

Just on RFA - my understanding is a player has 4 options:

1. renegotiate with his club (usually after testing his market worth)
2. formally nominate another clubs offer (can only nominate 1 offer), which allows his existing club to match and thus retain him. Note: if he nominates another club's offer and his club does not match he MUST go to that club he has nominated - he has effectively already accepted the offer but with an out of only if his existing club matches.
3. request existing club to trade
4. nominate for draft

I wasn't aware that point 2 was that rigid; or is that to say he can put a received offer to them and accept a lower deal , but can't do so if he formally presents the offer ?
If so there is still a lot of flexibility for the player which makes point 1 potentially last the entire season.

Yep, point 1 probably for the whole season. Can only formally nominate 1 offer once the RFA period begins after the season has ended - point being he can only nominate one other club's offer under RFA, which his existing club can match, he gets only one chance under RFA.

Buddy is icing on the cake, Ross Lyon is the best recruit our club has ever made.

Amen brother.

Under any of our previous coaches I'd be pretty nervous about the prospect of spending 1.5 mill a season on a larger-than-life, party boy superstar, but under Ross, not concerned in the slightest.

payback for the Croad trade suck it Hawforn!

Can't blame the Hawks for our own stupidity.

Would blame the Pies for Tarrant. Or Melbourne for Clark.

But the Croad deal (Croad in and Croad out) was all on us. They didn't hold a gun to our heads.

Out of interest, do you mean you are not concerned because Ross will stop his party boy ways, or you are not concerned because Ross will get the best out of him football wise even if he is partying his 1.5 mil a year away?

The latter, yep.

Under some of our less 'in control' coaches I'd be worried about the possibility of Buddy drifting into paid vacation mode, or at the very least that we wouldn't get value for money out of him.

also I'm sure the Steve's will get maximum marketing value out of him - will help Freo become even more financially stronger in the coming years (from membership, away game attendances and sponsors) than without Buddy.

AFL would not be that happy having probably the leagues number 1 drawcard playing in WA though - Freo games are not seen in Vic on Free to air or live on Foxtel unless it is a Friday night game or maybe Vs Collingwood.

Do people really just watch games because of one player?

It's not like Buddy leaving will cause Cyril, Mitchell and Hodge to suddenly contract glandular fever.

Their team is exciting. They didn't suddenly look sh*t when Buddy was out for several weeks (in a suspicious fashion). If he leaves, the AFL won't give a flying one.

I tend to agree and actually think Hawthorn relying on Franklin becomes too predictable. Some fans (small minority do follow teams just for one or two players though (women more so from my experience...).
More for neutral supporters given the choice would be more likely to want to watch Pav and Franklin working in tandem.

I know I used to love watching Brown and Lynch monster opposition defenses and certainly as a neutral supporter I loved to watch Carey if I could.

Fair enough.

But as much as I love watching Tex Walker play... something about watching Adelaide still sticks in my craw. Admittedly, they were better last year than I think I've ever seen 'em. But it's more about the team/style/approach/strategy that interests me than individual players.

I avoided St Kilda when watching H&A games with them matched up against any but the best, over the last few years. Don't think you'll need three guesses why.

But I'm really, really, really glad that he's our fella now. It's amazing how much cooler and more interesting the subtleties are when it's your team running around on the telly. And winning.

Then again, your point isn't about supporters watching their own. It's about folks watching teams that aren't the ones they support. Realistically, the AFL can't do anything about that, other than to make the game more "watchable"... hence, the sub rule... talk of two subs... interchange restrictions. They're working on it, but individual teams probably won't matter quite as much, I don't reckon.

Loving the look of Fremantle off the field at the moment, and they'll look even better on field with Franklin. Still a lot of water to go under the bridge yet, though.

My opinion:

  • Buddy has little or no intention of leaving the hawks
  • He has been offered just under a mill but knows he is the most marketable player in the comp and should get more, especially looking at some of the players at GWS and other clubs on more coin that he knows he is more valuable than.
  • He understands why he has not been offered more but if he takes it now, that's it, whereas if he leaves it until the end of the season, you never know what may happen, a big salaried player may leave, rules may change re 3rd party payments etc. and he may be able to get a better deal at Hawthorn.
  • Alternatively, he may have a falling out with the club or some issues may arise during the season and this gives him an opportunity to leave if he wants.
On a more cynical note:
  • he may just want to be on the back page of the Sun all season
  • it will give the Footy Show and us something to talk about
  • We're going to have to deal with another year of numerous media reports stating how we are trying to steal Buddy, then how we failed at getting him to Freo, even though he never had any intention of moving and never made any indication he might
  • may affect Hawks seasons, finals prep having to constantly deal with speculation all season.
  • he may be missing Sharrod and wonders whether he should follow financial incentives or love.

I think Buddy has made the right move putting off talks till the end of the year. This will lead to less speculation than the Cloke stuff as negoitations were taking place during the year. Assuming Buddy doesn't do a tour around Freo oval when the Hawks are in town, he'll only get a page a month on it.

I just hope we can be the Sydney of 2012 as more and more things are looking similar or could be similar in the future.
  • Finished 7th on the ladder the year before & won an away final against the previous Grand Finalist
  • Play a defensive running game with only a single good key forward.
  • Pick-up the best out of contract key forward on the market after winning the flag....
