There will be a few new captains in 2012, so I thought I'd look at who I think will be the captains in 5 years time.

Post your list

2017:

Adelaide: Richard Douglas
Brisbane: Jack Redden
Carlton: Marc Murphy
Collingwood: Scott Pendlebury
Essendon: Michael Hurley
Fremantle: Michael Barlow
Geelong: Joel Selwood
Gold Coast: David Swallow
GWS: Stephen Coniglio
Hawthorn: Jarryd Roughead
Melbourne: Jack Trengrove
North Melbourne: Andrew Swallow
Port Adelaide: Travis Boak
Richmond: Trent Cotchin
St Kilda: Ben McEvoy
Sydney: Daniel Hannebry
West Coast: Luke Shuey
Western Bulldogs: Ryan Griffen

GWS- Scully. In 5 years Coniglio will still be pretty young. Scully with that extra few years on him might get the nod.

Carlton- I reckon Gibbs is a chance, was involved in the leadership there from very early.

Hawthorn- can't see Roughead getting it. Lewis was my first thought.

Melbourne - Jack Grimes wouldn't suprise me either.

North- Reckon Ziebell is a big shot.

They're my changes from your list.

Cotchin was made VC for 2012, I reckon he'l get the captaincy in 2013.

At Sydney we have a heap of potential AFL captains.

Keiran Jack
Daniel Hannebery
Josh Kennedy
Shane Mumford
Luke Parker
Alex Johnson

Gonna be tough to split the, all but the top 2 are leading the race.

For the dogs, Mitch Wallis is known to have very strong leadership qualities and will definitelty come into consideration in future years. However given Boyd will be most likely be gone in a 2-3 years, Wallis (and any draftees from last year onwards) would probably be too young to take over by 2014-15.

There appears to be a bit of a gap in the dog's group at the minute for guys in the 22-27 age bracket who can slot into the position for at least a few years, so my best bet would have to be Griffen due to a lack of other obvious options.

By then Andrew Swallow could well have handed over the captaincy (assuming he became captain in the first place) like Adam Simpson did the year before his last, or retired. He's 26 this year, by then he'll be 30-31 and winding down.

Swallow turns 25 in June this year LB.

Still think you are right though.

That age group of 22-26 is a big worry for us. We have traded in a few around that age (Sherman, Veszpremi, Djerkurra, etc) to try and fill the void.
Before any trades, we really only had Griffen and Higgins that are regular players. Plus Cooney, but he is always killed by injuries.

West Coast - Can see Shannon Hurn being the next captain. Waters and Priddis right in the mix as well.

GWS - Phil Davis would make him captain in a year or two

Richmond - Cotchin will captain after Newman

North Melbourne - Andrew Swallow to be captain after Harvey finally walks away

Geelong - Joel Selwood? Is practically captain already

Brisbane - Tom Rockcliff will captain Brisbane I would think post-Brown

Sydney - Kieren Jack surely would be the next captain

Can't say whether the Swans will maintain the co-captain system but Kieren Jack, Josh Kennedy, Dan Hannebery would be massive contenders. Nick Smith would be a roughie. If one of Goodes or McVeigh went down at some point during 2012, it wouldn't surprise me to see Rhyce Shaw elevated to vice-captain. He is spoken of universally in high regard by the rest of the playing list.
