I'm not that fussed about F/S any longer now that you have to pay a lot closer to market value unless you win the spoon. If we want any player more than anyone else we can just offer them a truck load of cash, doubt the Swans have the cap space to go with us.

If a player's heart isn't to be here, I prefer he be somewhere else.

Spot on. It is a rort however that sons of ex afl players be eligible for the northern academies

I think Blakey is going to end up too tall for midfield and too skinny for KPF anyway.

Just like Dusty, Josh Kelly et al - I have 2 greatly conflicting dreams in play for Nick's future.

We'll put it this way: he'll either be drinking Champagne while wearing a North Melbourne premiership medal or working full-time at Officeworks in 3 years if my goal-setting powers prove effective.

In theory, however, the son of an indigenous Swans gun who moved to Tasmania and joined our academy would be eligible to be taken by us as well. The only issue is nobody moves to Tasmania. :stern look

Our club had the option of enticing Blakey back to North and in so doing, remove him from their clutches. Isn't that what Melbourne did with Viney? If we REALLY wanted him, I am sure we could have arranged for it to happen. The draft this year is allegedly very strong, perhaps it isn't worth locking yourself into committing to take a father son as high as he is intended to go given the depth of talent this year.

Also, I think it would be short-sighted for Blakey to choose Swans because of his dad's connection with the Swans. As a coach, the only guarantee is that you are going to get sacked one day, it is only a matter of time. How is your loyalty going to be to a club that just sacked your dad? In the time he would still be at the swans, there would be a conflict of interest, part of the reason we moved Old McDonald out of his list management role once we had taken Luke. Blakey can't realistically be coached at AFL level by his dad.

It would suit us but be wrong as well. If your father played AFL you shouldn't be considered for any pathways that are aimed at increasing participation of demographic minorities.

I don't think North should have to take the wrap for not poaching a coach just to nullify an AFL rort. For all we know we might've approached John previously but he chose to stay in his rent-free city hall funded harbourside home.

I don’t think any kid who’s father played afl should be eligible for any academy. The academies were brought in to introduce kids to the game that would otherwise be lost to other codes.

I see where you are coming from, but is it a selfish attitude? What if the Swans have made Blakey into a really good footballer, why should we get him just because his dad played for us? If they didn't get access to him, would they have spent their time/resources developing him? Would he have been as good had that scenario panned out?

If we wanted him badly enough, we could have taken him out of Sydney.

You can thrash this logic from any angle you like and it still flops like Robbo after his 18th bourbon.

Yeh your dad being a top percentile games played holder and a professional coach was probably sufficient opportunity for you to start exploring your AFL potential without that invaluable academy slot.

Not many 13/14 year olds are going to move from the comfort of their family home in COLAland to Melbourne bro.. not many parents would want them to leave at that age either.

Tas left icy Kiev to join Alex Malley's CPA Academy in Coogee to be fair.

No not a selfish attitude. I love the romance of the F/S legacies. I love that Daicos is at Collingwood & and the Silvagni name lives on at Carlton.

I don’t think the kids should have to play for the club their fathers played for, but if they don’t want to play there they should only be eligible for the draft.

It is not what I mean, ie Melbourne got Viney out of Adelaide and secured him as a father-son by getting him out of Adelaide by giving his dad a job for a few years.

People can argue about the whole morality issue, but it has been this way for a while and we know the playbook of how to get around it. When you consider how much cash we dangled in front of Martin and Kelly we could have put Blakey snr back on the list for all it mattered. Obviously, we don't consider him a high enough prospect or priority to make something happen. Well, I assume we hadn't made an attempt, at the rate we get knocked back it is hard to tell. :stern look

It is different in NSW, they don't have the junior development pathway that we have in Victoria with the junior leagues.

I'm not supportive of the way the AFL have dicked us, just saying it has hardly been something that came down in the last shower and I gave an example of how another club got around something like it. Should we have had to do something like that? No. But that has been the system in place for some time, bitching about it now doesn't get you anywhere.

It would suit us but be wrong as well. If your father played AFL you shouldn't be considered for any pathways that are aimed at increasing participation of demographic minorities.

It isn't about participation as I am aware, it is about the pathway. Ie, it is a lot harder for a kid in NSW to get through to the AFL than it is in Victoria because our junior system is leagues ahead of anywhere else in the country. The academy helps to get kids through to AFL level.

I just think academies should be AFL funded and operated and all the kids enter the draft pool, but for some reason that seems inconceivable to the AFL.

I don't think North should have to take the wrap for not poaching a coach just to nullify an AFL rort. For all we know we might've approached John previously but he chose to stay in his rent-free city hall funded harbourside home.

It is not a wrap, there must be a reason why we didn't offer him a job and get the family back, it is not like our assistant coaches are flawless, we gave Green a job. It wouldn't have killed us to give Blakey a golden handshake and the job we gave to Green a few years ago to get his family down here and away from Sydney. Maybe we tried and he wanted to stay, who knows. It would be depressing if a club champ also knocked us back.

Perhaps we should invest the funds that we didn't get anyone with on a PR specialist.

You're over complicating this Tas.

John Blakey doesn't give enough of a stuff about North to influence his son joining the club.
I think that's being unfair Tef, I'm sure he's leaving it up to Nick to decide. He grew up supporting North but when you start playing footy as a teen, you form mates as you move through the system together and these ties are strong. Yeah it sucks for us but this isnt about rejecting us, more about him staying with his mates. That would be pretty much his world right now.

The only thing that may change things is if Blakey Snr leaves Sydney

Completely disagree. Every kid in the draft has to leave thier friends to go play afl. Blakey could choose to be part of a family legacy like the Silvagni one or choose to play for the Swans and that’s the end of it. SOS was never going to let his boys be part of GWS.

Yep. How long was SOS at GWS for? Five years? Blakey junior is soft and Blakey senior im shocked hasnt instilled in his kid the importance of father son.
Ffs Gavin Browns been here five years and has proudly whisked his kids off to Collingwood. Twice in the past year.
What a copout this all is

That’s better

Found this on the bottom of a HS article:

THE WHISPER

We hear one father-son prospect who has a choice of clubs this year won’t be going to one in particular. The reason? His old man is still dirty about being left out of a finals team back in his day.
