Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

But what did he really say about his weaknesses? That is currently isn't using his height to advantage, and that he doesn't yet move all that well around the ground. Hard to disagree with either of them.

And he said that some supporters are massively overrating him? That seems right at this stage as well.

No issue with the overview of Witts - I was more pleasantly surprised with the glowing review of Hartley (although this came after watching Hartley's only really top end game of the champs, so he would be forgiven for thinking this was the norm, rather than the exception).

Witts has PLENTY of weaknesses however Quigley said that he would take Hartley over Witts which is the point I was focussed on. I completely agree with his analysis of Witts however to say that he would take Hartley over Witts when weighing up all variables that amount to potential only, Witts wins hands down.

Love that he was so positive on Hartley though - I've read from other posts that the general consensus on him is quite mixed and that the particular game he played on Patton was by far and away his best with his others being mediocre at best.

Yeah, that's true. I agree with everything you have written here.

Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

I agree that Hartly would have gone top 20. I really rate this bloke. If Hartly is top 20 then Witts is top 10. Mick is spot on with his assessment of Wits, he will be a freak and an AA. He is a good mark and is good below his knees which no ruckman is apart from Cox. We need to teach him to jump better in the ruck and the art of ruck but thats the easy part of it all.

I was stunned when Mick compared him to a mix of Sandilands and Cox... Why on earth would he do that? If that doesn't put pressure on the kid, then what will?

I honestly haven't seen anything yet to suggest he will be a freak (except for his height). He certainly isn't a good mark yet, but he is reasonably good getting it off the deck. He needs to work on his body work a heap - both in ruck contests and marketing contests - and his general craftwork in the ruck, as well as his fitness and mobility. Still a long way from being certain, but as many have said, only 19 and rucks notoriously don't hit stride util early 20s

Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

I think Quigly is underrating Witts as a lot of talent scouts and Hine included have said multiple times that Witts would be a 1st round selection. I get the feeling that he's heard the hype so he's being a harsh marker.

Anyway, as for rucks taking their time to develop, that's true, although a lot of the time young ruckmen are skinny. Witts will still take time but he should be able to come onto the scene earlier than other ruckmen his age as he already has the mass.

Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

Who in the hell is Quigley anyway?

He is one of the best phantom draft writers on BigFooty.

I agree with what he wrote based off what I have seen of Witts in the VFL. He does struggle to move around the ground and he is often unassured over head. He also needs a lot of work on his ruck technique.

Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

It seems Haggerty and E Edwards are very good chances to be listed in 2013, but has anyone heard where Jed Hillman is at re his footy and whether he is any chance to be listed at the end of 2012? Did he play any rep footy in 2011?

Also what age group is Darcy Moore in next season? Ready for TAC Cup yet? What is his draft year?

I was just looking for stuff on him. It has been noted he played under 15s this year. Still a few years to go.

Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

Our plundering of NSW stocks ends soon does it not? I presume the last line is drawn under Edwards and co. then we have to hunt elsewhere.

Be interested to see where we start looking next. You could go overseas I suppose if the intense scrutiny ratchets up a bit. What's the story with our South African connection, the Zebras etc?

Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

Looking at the blockbuster quality of next years top 20 to 30 players in the National Draft, and assuming our first round pick is around 18, I reckon there is a good chance no one will bid a pick under 18, and we will get young Stewart for a pick around number 40. We will then be able to use our first selection on a gun midfielder. You would assume we will lose someone to GWS next year and will also get a compensation pick(s) to use next year. That's before thinking about anyone we may claim via free agency.

That's obviously why we've had so many dominant ruckmen at the club over the last 30 years...

I spoke with a colleague who played for North and whose son plays VFL and he said that Collingwood are onto an absolute winner. He said that his marking for a young big is very very good and that his mobility considering his size and inexperience is excellent. He can't believe the swifty Collingwood have pulled in getting Witts so cheap.

That's becuase most of them were hacks like Fanning, Richards and Bryan. Fraser was just too weak to ruck. This bloke is taller and stronger than any of them. I am very excited as a supporter with him at Collingwood.

Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

Richards and Wood were both highish draft picks, Wood has shown a bit, Richards never developed. I don't know how much of that is due to the players or the club's lack of a decent ruck coach.
I'd say it's got more to do with genetics then development.

No matter how many weights Richards did, he was never going to be able to compete with the Cox's and Otten's of the AFL, yet Wood at least has grown into a body that can compete with them, even if his talent may not have got there yet.

valid point. We have coaches who coach the coaches, some clubs have assistant coaches to the assistant coaches. According to the club website we don't have a ruck coach and haven't had as long as I can remember.

I've hear that Darren Flanagan is our ruck coach, good luck finding any reference to him on the club website.

I've heard Eddie say on the radio he'd love Monkey to come back as a coach, we have plenty of cash and have had a group of developing talls for several years, why the hell don't we have a dedicated Ruck coach?

Who's been coaching Shae, Lachie, Cam and Ceglar on ruckwork? Who's going to teach Witts how to use that massive frame of his?

I thought Barnes was our Ruck Coach?

Re: Future Magpies Watch '11

It is strange if we don't have a ruck coach. Odd. But I hear the Club spent its last dollars on a gooch trimmer.
