Having coached a very decent level of basketball zones are an interesting concept. Basketball wise, the best way to beat a variety of zones is to have lots of motion and ball movement. What's interesting is basic individual fundamentals of the offensive players without the ball are just as important as the player with the ball in hand. To beat it, you need to have players without the ball getting into spots that are offensively aggressive which then makes the defence have to move. It's important to have players that have elite to above average ball handling fundamentals and skills. From a western bulldogs perspective this is where we struggle against it. We don't have enough elite kicks, players without the ball have no idea how to make the defence shift by getting to spots that create holes in the zone. Players with the ball are not aggressive enough, e very rarely play on quickly or take on the man on the mark which astounds me considering he can't move straight away anymore. It's a coaching issue 100% - Players are not educated

On the reverse, when we play a zone it's a shambles. The idea when playing one is to 1. Slow the game down and 2, make the offensive teams go to parts of the ground where you can limit their effectiveness and scoring opportunities and hopefully create a higher percentage of turnovers. We do not move in the zone, we have lazy players that do a lot of pointing and do not stay on their toes. They have no idea how to shift in the zone when someone has to go to the ball carrier. A zone easily breaks done if you have 1, 2 or 3 players not doing the fundamental things and this generally relates to laziness or lack of understanding.

Once again, 100% coaching issue
I'm also from a basketball background having played and coached for 25+ years and agree 100% with your comments. Can I also add you must teach man on man defence before progressing to a zone defence because the offence will try to isolate poor defenders to score easier goals. From what I see we have players in defence who cannot defend which in turn we see lack of movement in our zone and hence easy scores.

Can you pop over and teach the Bulls for me xx

Actually if Grant and Darcy stay, and Cameron joins them, just need Ilija Grgic on the board so all their bridal party members can reunite!

Big Ilija could double as goal kicking coach - 107.65 career total is better accuracy than everyone bar Weightman, Bruce and Treloar on our current list!
(Edit: Dale and LJones good accuracy too - but neither have played forward for some years.)

Actually he's been incredibly successful off field, significant position at Shell, own building and construction business, on the board at Westbourne Grammar - maybe not such a bad option to add to the board, still based heavily in the Western suburbs too. 🤔

"Would" or "Will"?! Come on Vital, do you know more?! 😉

Imagine if we went from this year's coaching group to 2024 and Bevo is surrounded by Lade and ex-senior coaches! Can Bevo bring them along for the ride as well as he paints narratives for players?

Beveridge - bench/figurehead/narrative spinner
Lade - rucks
Ratten - mids
Dew - defence
Cameron - forwards?
Buckley - tactics

Oh, goodness me.... we'll be unbeatable!
(But does a champion coaching group out-perform a coaching group of that ilk?!)
Beveridge - bench/figurehead/narrative spinner
Lade - rucks
Ratten - mids
Dew - defence
Barlow - forwards?

I'm assuming he worked with Bevo under Clarkson at Hawks?

Interesting if so, would it be to work with Bevo - or move away from Clarkson?
The poor guy has had some absolute rotten luck with the Carlton firing, Saints firing and then stepping up to take on North.

Surely he’d just like to be able to settle somewhere and take on an assistant gig.

Given Bevo's constant public support when other senior coaches are sacked or facing challenges, I'd be surprised if any senior coach who leaves their role wouldn't be knocking on Bevo's door to work under him regardless of how little we pay. (Except for those 2 whingeing brothers of course.)

It seems its only aspiring assistants who are keen to move on. We obviously have been targeting the wrong cohort!

I believe the club is currently exploring exhumation applications for Norm Smith and Jack Worrall.

I’d love to offer a director of coaching or similar role to Brett Ratten. It’d be a different opportunity for Ratts and he now has experience coaching 3 different clubs at various journeys. If we could add Dew to the senior coaching panel, that would be two additional experienced voices to sit with Bevo & Lade.

After that I’d be targeting fresh and hungry younger coaches who have played the game recently and have a couple of years of experience under their belts.

First album I ever bought!
I was listening to the music on the test pattern on Channel 2 one day :p and Nothing Is Easy came on. I think that was the first time I heard it [it was when it first came out] and was very impressed with the track, great performance and arrangement :rainbow:

Jethro Tull were probably one of the first alternative bands - a lead singer playing the flute in an at times heavy rock band was something a 15 year old learner-guitarist just couldn't resist!
Also bought This Was, Benefit and Aqualung - still have them!
...and still listen to them 😘

Would be a big step up from Grant.

Very happy with Dew will hopefully be our version of Don Pyke and revolutionize our ball movement
That's just not who Stewart Dew is.

He is a players coach. Someone who build relationships with his players, has a really easy way about him.

The Suns hired Steven King to help with the tactical side of the game who learnt and developed his craft under Bevo.

Ratten open to something new...

Has anyone spotted him hanging around Barkers yet? (Or is Barkers still just a portable coffee cart during construction?

I wonder if he knows anyone else apart from Bevo? Probably not...

"Hey Ladey, Ratts here. Clarko has gone nuts again, any idea if there's any openings at your place?"

"Ratts, funny you called. Good timing btw. Seems there might be a few options here. I'm not sure if I'm the guy to ask, though."

"Come on mate, remember that time I let you wear my purple whistle at St Kilda? You didn't take it off for a week!"

"That's true. I loved that whistle Ratts, showered with it, everything."

"Whatever happened to that whistle Ladey, I miss it?"

"Ah, um, yeah, sorry mate, missus ripped it off one night in the throes of passion, it's a little damaged, but I can give it back."

"Ah, ok, don't worry about it, you hang on to it. So what colour whistles does Bevo use...?"

"Hey Ratts, Bevo here, how's things?"

"Bevo! Yeah, ok. I'm kind of between jobs atm."

"Yeah, I heard, just wondering if you'd like to work together again?"

"Hmm, not sure mate, I'm just weighing up options."

"Well, ok, I'll just give you one thing to think about. I rarely use whistles, but when I do, I prefer ORANGE. You still like orange whistles, right Ratts?"

"Orange?! When can I start...?"

More details emerging....

"Ratts, I've had a bit of a re-think while I was away. I'm thinking of making some changes."

"Sounds good Clarko, need to move with the times. What sort of changes?"

"I'm getting rid of whistles for starters... And maybe visors."

"F*** off. I can't work under these conditions, I'm out."

"Hey Ratts, Burkey here."

"Burkey! Wow, haven't heard from you since that state game where we..."

"Yeah, never mind, mate. This is business."

"Business huh? Are you expanding your AFLW coaching set-up?"

"Nah, actually Bevo asked me to give you a call. And all he said to say was "whistles"... Do you know what that's about?"

"Are you wearing a whistle right now Burkey?"

"Ah, yeah, it's on an old 2020 Bulldogs strap. Nice whistle too. Why do you ask Ratts? Ratts...? Are you still there...?"

Sorry, just having some fun. I am not aware if Brett Ratten has any attachment to whistles, and I mean no disrespect to him.

But if he is appointed as an assistant to Bevo, and I see a photo of him at VUWO wearing a whistle, I might just lose my mind...! :drunk:
