no argument about them being cheap and crap, but anyone who says a 1997 Hyundai Excel is a quality vehicle with refined safety has never driven one. They got better over the last 30 years (all the while sponsoring carlton during this time) and Chery will most likely also.

My point is Saints aren't in a position to knock back a major sponsor (neither are we) because of embarrassment and most likely couldn't care less what they car buying public think. Its a win for them to pick up a major sponsor with deep pockets. People can then make their own decision on whether they want to buy that car, or eat that burrito wrap or whatever.

There are plenty of major sponsors who make awful products or have terrible corporate ethics. Sports clubs can't be that selective.

McQualter would surely get another acting coach gig if Bevo doesn't survive the year though, that's got to be worth something.

If we did have to throw cash at anyone I'd still want Nigel Lappin.
Matty Boyd's staying in Freo but he'd be my no 2, especially given he could coach multiple lines (midfield, defence or stoppage).

The drawcard for us could be there if Bevo was actually willing to take a step back and become a Macrae or Hinkley type operator on game day and leave McQualter in the box seat.

Bevo was the best motivator in the game for a couple of seasons and even at the back end of 2021 during our finals run. He desperately needs someone to take a significant amount of pressure off the tactical and game nous side of things so he can focus on that.

I struggle to see how we aren't attractive for an assistant coach to lead a line? Forwards, you've got 3 great young forwards to shape an attack in Naughts, Cody and JUH. Midfield, working with arguably the best player in the comp and one of the best inside mids. Defence with really good rebounding defenders and a great lockdown KPD.
For everyone who doesn't rate our list, our squad is top 4 worthy if you get every part firing.

Yeah everything we all love about McRae at the Pies was being said about Bevo seven years ago. He’s a motivator first and a tactical coach second. Same as McRae, same as Fagan.

Ask all the assistant coaches that leave? Word gets around the ‘industry’. Doesn’t sound like a healthy culture there at the moment. Things can improve but governance and management need to provide the environment and clip a few egos whilst doing it.

As much as we need assistant coaches and good ones at that, we are also in desperate need of a very good, astute and footy hardened Football Manager.

Grant was a great player and seems a nice bloke but I don't think his football talents and good bloke rollover into his current role.
