What does a Director of Coaching do?

Isn't the Coach a director of coaching because he directs the other coaches?

Bottom line - will this bloke have a big say in our strategy?
I wouldn’t have a bloody clue but I would have thought the idea would be the DOC sort of oversees all the coaches and makes sure everyone is in line with each other and to put it simply doing their job I guess.

I would think a senior coach shouldn’t really be expected to oversee the line coaches too, to an extent of course - and have to worry about them doing their jobs

Wasn’t having a dig at you, just thought it would be a bit of humour. Wanted to get in before we had the usuals come in say he’s done nothing in his career.
I did have a little giggle, just can't ever be sure around here what's a dig and what's not lately. ;)

He's only been with them since 2021, right?

Essendon for most of his career, then Melbourne briefly, then Geelong?
Assistant at Essendon (taking over during the injection bans for a few weeks). Took over as head of development before moving into the same role at Melbourne and then moving into the same role again at the Cats in 21.

IIRC

Pratt
Lade
Egan

have come a long way since
Spangher
Webb
Smith

Like the idea of Mathew Egan. He is outside the love triangle and has had a good coaching career thus far. His playing career was crueled when he broke down right before Geelong’s draught breaking premiership and golden period, just as he made the AA team. This for me ticks the boxes of experience and wisdom in the ranks.
Can Egan bring Nigel Lappin with him? Trent Cotchin for a role would be great too as a newly retired top shelf character.

I'm still not entirely sold on Egan. He was at Essendon during the drugs crisis and then at Melbourne just before they came good.
Wasn't Egan in development at Geelong?

If he's coming over for a director of coaching position, it seems a large jump

Essendon - Forward coach, backline coach, head of player development and VFL coach
Melbourne - Head of Development
Geelong - Head of Player Development

Correct in that it's still a jump.

Head of Development at 2 teams that won Premierships seems like natural progression to me? Brings a lot of experience and IP to us which many here have been screaming for, I’m very happy with the appointment if it’s true

Yeah Essendon is a worry for me but must get some credit for developing the Melbourne 2021 team at least partially surely?

Both new coaches have been at recent premiers. Now we just need someone from Richmond and the Pies and that’s all teams since 2016 covered.

If we are successful in landing Egan, would I be correct in saying it's the first time ever we have had an assistant coach who has previously been head coach of an AFL team? Granted he was only an interim coach, so it might not be the same, but at least it's something.

Did Macca not try to bring him over as an assistant during his tenure, or am I thinking of someone else?

C'mon man we were all having a good time in here

Lade had 1 game as interim senior coach at StKilda, so technically we've now got 2 former senior coaches amongst our assistants🌈

Matt Egan is a Fantastic get. IMO since 2016 we have underperformed in developing our young players. Egan looks like he is a gun in this area (even with him now having an overseer role he will bring in a hell of a lot of IP, direction, and leadership). Player development is an increasingly vital ingredient. A couple of good interviews:
