It's funny you should mention Cripps. Have it on good authority he wants to come home, and the timeline is likely at the end of next season. Is very keen to play alongside Fyfe and Neale here at Fremantle. Have heard we are going to offer our 2018 2nd rounder, Nick Suban and Danyle Pearce which they seem confident will get it done. Does that seem reasonable Cripps 'n' Blue Bloods ? Or would we need to throw in Zac Dawson as well?
We'll throw in Ballantyne as well and grab Weitering.

So in (my) summary to date:

  • Fyfe's current contract ends at the end of 2017 where he becomes an restricted FA (correct?)
  • He has stated publicly that he intends to stay at Freo (with the proviso that he wants to give himself a good chance of a premiership i.e. if Freo is going into a 10 y rebuild, don't expect him to stay around)
  • Fyfe has also indicated that he is waiting until the player payments change mid-2017 before he will negotiate a new contract (in other words to maximise his $$ which he justifiably believes he deserves)
  • By the end of this year's trade and draft period (assuming things progress as expected) Freo will now have have the most talented (albeit young) list they have ever had by a way (and the best chance of a crack at a premiership within the next 2-5 years).
  • Freo have lost about half of their older (more expensive) players this year, and MJ, Dawson, Suban, will also likely be gone out of the cap by the end of 2017 i.e. Freo will have their own large chest of jewels to match any offer for Fyfe at the end of 2017. As one poster said above, we could've afforded Hogan and Fyfe
  • Freo are just completing what will be the best training facilities of all clubs in the country, the new Perth Stadium will soon be finished, and Freo are currently one of the four wealthiest clubs.
So what does that mean for these so called "warchest"-building clubs that will have a crack at Fyfe this year or next:

  • If he is to move from Freo next year he will need (i) serious $$, (ii) a good chance of playing and winning at least one premiership in the next 5 years, (iii) be at a wealthy club with good facilities and influence, and (iv) a club that plays a good number of games in Melbourne including high profile games/Friday night games (needed to build Brand FYFE 'F7' to make it worthwhile to move). Fyfe has only shown himself to be a long term planner and will not change that for quick short term $$ that will affect his long term F7$$.
  • So, who does that leave:
Melbourne, Dogs, Saints are too poor and/or play too often at Docklands,
Carlton is certainly not going to be chasing a cup anytime the next 10 years
Collingwood fits most of the profile but they are a revolving door and for every good player they get in, they seem to lose another (or more). Too many question marks over future potential performances
Essendon and Geelong - maybe but I would think cap space would be an issue at Geelong
Richmond - Fyfe has a soft spot for Richmond. Begged them to draft him but they decided Griffiths was a better pick up the pick before. However, while they keep that coach, they are going nowhere fast while their stars like Reiwoldt just get older and closer to retirement.
Hawks - they might have a great coach but Hawthorn minus their 10 oldest and best players is not the Hawthorn other clubs have grown to fear. Hodge and Burgoyne, and Gibson will unlikely play much beyond 2017 to add to the loss of Mitchell, Hale, Lake, Roughy and others. While they will compete, they have to be kidding if they think those aging stars will just be easily replaced as shown in the straight sets exit this finals series. Today's article is just another way they are trying to save face similar to pushing Mitchell (their F&B) to WC for a younger version rather than retiring him.
North - giggle.

So, possibly, Hawks, Essendon, Geelong and Collingwood have a chance. But they have to put up far more than what Freo can afford and Freo as mentioned above will have just about cleared the decks by the end of next year and have more cap space than just about anyone and the $$ to back it up.
In view of the above, I would have to give it a 10% chance of a move to one of those 4 clubs and 90% chance of staying, and only because brand F7 could be built up so big if at a big wealthy Melbourne club playing at the MCG and in finals the next 10 years (and less travel).

Disclaimer: This is my humble opinion only based on minimal facts and largely conjecture and bias.

That's the end of this thread in one posting. Facts and a reasonable summary of the most likely outcomes put into a logical sequence that even a dipstick like Crumpet Face can follow.

Well said.

Lol @ you thinking Hagdorn could maintain concentration long enough to read that

He'd be off writing his next piece of fiction after reading the first paragraph that says fyfes current contract ends at the end of 2017

Let me preface this by saying I don't think Fyfe is going anywhere, let alone Carlton BUT

There is talk of Carlton getting the Gibbs deal done by getting 13 and something else from Crows meaning they will use 13 for Marchbank and hold on to 5.

Flow on from this is they could possibly take SPS at 5 simply to use as a bargaining chip should they believe their delusions of grandeur thinking they are a chance at Fyfe.

It seems that this is a friendly environment to post given the opposition welcome note in the title, so I'll post here :)

The coach will probably be gone by the end of 2017 if we miss the 8, so you think he still wouldn't want to come here? We'd have Prestia, Cotchin and Dusty that he could play alongside with Rance at the back and Riewoldt at the front :D Maybe we can launch into contention with him in the side in a couple of years with the aforementioned players.

Not sure that is appealing enough to come here though (considering that there are more promising teams around us in Melbourne), but Richmond could give Fremantle what they want as we'd probably happily part ways with two first-rounders for him (could be an early first-rounder next year by the looks of it).

Although I'd rather him at Richmond than Fremantle (because he is that good), but if he doesn't come here then I'd rather him stay at Fremantle and smash it. It would be strange seeing him without that purple jumper on the field.

yeah, maybe you're right, but I got kind of distracted part way through on "Rance at the back" so missed some of the rest. If your coach has survived this far, then he obviously has pictures or something similar on someone high up in the club (Caroline? ugggh) 'cause all we have seen from the outside is someone wasting years of quality talent and the board/admin just defending him and doing nothing about it. He may be around longer than expected.

That is what many Richmond supporters see too. Not sure what is going on at Richmond at the moment, but there will probably be a exodus at board level if Hardwick does end up getting sacked because many of them backed him in strongly.

At the same time, I don't know if Fyfe would be attracted to such a fallout either.

Apart from Fyfe supporting Richmond as a young tucker, a lot would depend on who your coach is and the stability of your board and administration. Also, would you have the cap to accommodate all your current talent as well as Fyfe's $1M for five years? If he said he only wants Vic based club, I reckon St. Kilda have a lot more to offer next year.

No offence, but from the outside looking in, Richmond look like a cluster f@#k at the moment.

I feel like St Kilda will finish higher than Richmond on the ladder though over the next couple of years, so their first-rounders will probably be later than ours. But then again, they have Hawthorn's 2017 first-rounder. if Hawthorn bomb out, then they can give two 2017 first rounders for him.

In terms of appeal though and the way the club is run, I do agree that St Kilda would be more of an attractive prospect than us though. Maybe his childhood memories of following Richmond may lean him towards us because at the moment that is all that we seem to have going for us in terms of getting Fyfe. Cap space I am not sure. If Lids leaves then we may have the cap space to accomodate him, but not 100% sure.

Red Alert! Hawthorn are clearing the decks for a crack at Fyfe in 2017!
https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/s...ring-the-decks-for-a-crack-at-nat-fyfe/#page1

Freo powers that are, do whatever it takes to prevent this happening!
(OK inevitably, Nat/Nathan will be contacted by numerous clubs making 'huge' offers anyway).

Do you think he would remain loyal to Fremantle, to continue to 'live and die for this club'?

Good luck with Freo or Richmond for that matter not matching free agency offers for Fyfe and Martin respectively. Hawthorn can't trade two first rounders that they don't have.

Doesn't matter anyway. Both Fyfe and Martin will be signed up by the mid season bye.

I'm hoping Fyfe has a five year 1 mill plus wriggle room offer + captaincy on his desk at the moment with some room to haggle, as Mundy, Ibbotson, Griffen, Sandi, Suban, Johnson, Barlow's salaries can be replaced with first year players next year and the year after.

We have a lot of players in the midrange signed up now on 3 year deals. We have some maneuverability

Not worried, surely hawks are the slide with minimal draft currency. Great from a pay day point of view, but not for finals success.

Freo on the other hand look to have a strong young side in the making, with a couple of vets being moved out.

We will probably lose Johnson and Sandi next year, and Fyfe will already be on a packet.

Don’t lock up your daughters, lock up your free agents.

Peanuts compared to the 7 year offer at more than $1 million a season reportedly turned down by Nat in 2014.

Fyfe needs to decide whether he wants to make the most money possible or achieve the ultimate success. He can't have both.

However, he can still make a pretty penny whilst maximising his chances of winning a flag which is what I think he will do.

What would you offer Nat to stay, and for what duration?
Are club sponsors such as Woodside allowed to offer gifts, incentives or perks?
(A whopping large portfolio of shares in oil or gas ;))

A lot. For as long he is prepared to deal eg 3 million in 3 years. But I think he would accept a bit less money to avoid salary cap pressure (he did before.)
He is allowed to paid on top of the salary cap in an ambassadorial role, which I assume means more public appearances, and he is allowed to get sponsorship and appear in paid adverts.
No brown paper bags full of shares though.

Five years $1M per year, captaincy and if he leads us to our first premiership, a statue next to Pav's at our Cockburn training facility and probably a club medal named after him in the future.
