I think as a Lions community we need to weaponise the East Brisbane State School NIMBYs. Get them really fired up.

By weaponise, are you saying give the East Brisbane State School nuclear capabilities to build deterrence?

You can hear the heads exploding from the Victoria Park NIMBYs from miles away
That's because they like having what amounts to a private park that virtually the rest of Brisbane doesn't use.

Thanks for that it looks like an updated version with some breakdown costings (image below).
Like all costings in the early stages, we have no idea how accurate it will be.
I noticed they allowed just 4 months for a validation report
The Government is still waiting for one on The Gabba rebuild that was requested about 12 months ago now.
Also, the validation report for the new Roma Street Parkland site was marked as urgent in March and still not back yet.

It all looks great and obviously saves costs being in a greenfield site and planning for 3 projects in the same precinct will also reduce costs.
I like the positioning of the Brisbane Stadium. If that is the only building approved, we should all be happy.
I noticed in their plans they have kept Gundoo Memorial Grove (heritage trees) mostly intact
I assume they have also looked at the other cultural and heritage sections of the park https://apps.des.qld.gov.au/heritage-register/detail/?id=602493

One thing it has shown is the cost of building the Brisbane Arena being $880 million, my pet hate as you all know.
That at least gives us a better idea of costings on a different site
It was to be $4 billion (validation report Quirk report) on the original site.
According to the Quirk review his proposed new site for this project is expected to come in at a convenient $2.5 billion.
Thats just his best assessment and also just happens to be the Commonwealth contribution to the venue.

I feel like such a report can only be written with a clear intention to do it. I find it extremely hard to believe that anyone is going to such an extent without officially contracting it.
On the last page where it lists their major projects, they list Brisbane 2032.

I feel like the whole thing is a charade and this is what the government is actually planning and they are playing a political game to protect themselves from the anti-stadium movements that can influence public opinion when it comes to votes.

Also, looking at that timeline, what other option is possible? A 36 month build seems lean to me. A decision is needed immediately after the 100 days.

I’m certain that this is not even in question anymore

I hope you are right josh.

My concern with this is that it looks like too much. Too radical. They're struggling to sell the narrative of replacing the Gabba and this presents it as 3 new stadiums.
Possibly, but if they can pitch the potential cost savings that comes about by having construction in one area, they might be able to do it. I'm skeptical of that though, given the last regime couldn't even communicate that the some of the money they were spending came from the IOC.

The LNP market themselves as the financial management party, yada yada. I'm interested to see how they spin this and how they manage costs.

What are they going to do with an 18,000 swimming venue after the games, where the usual local meet would get no more than a crowd of 800?

Probably have it so that it can be used for other sports like basketball etc when not needed for swimming

But they are also building a 12,000 seat arena next door

Judging by the photos it looks like a permanent venue and won't be downsized afterwards
Where did the 18K figure come from? Says 7K on the image above...

Covering the ICB can’t be cheap - is that the deck thing pitched at 1.2b?

I like the expenditure on the parkland to elevate it to something useable for the entire city rather than its current use which is a private park for local residents + a place for hospital discharge people who have no where else to go to wander off into

Gold coast mayor announces (again) that their Aquatic Centre upgrade with a roof is a far better option for the Government to hold swimming events
Gold Coast will partially fund the project.
Paywall so i can't read but was on channel 7 today.

This was proposed by the IOC way back in 2021 instead of Brisbane Arena.
So easy to get the IOC approval.
It is to have a roof as well as increased capacity.
Below from Austadiums in July 2024

The render clip shown on the news has it looking pretty impressive compared to the below drawing
Doing something far cheaper and that makes sense should be a no brainer.
But we are not in that space yet.
