Watched the game after the lads birthday party. What an amazingly brilliant game! :D While I tipped us, I didn't think we'd win that easily. So many positives, so very few negatives.

It wasn't a full strength Geelong, but you can only beat whoever they throw at you.

* Topped off an already great winning weekend: little bloke's under 12s team had their first win on Friday night (75 - 0) and his under 11's team won by 6 goals against a renowned tough team. He thinks it's all because it was his birthday... and I'm not telling him otherwise! :)

Geez, that was pleasant to watch :thumbsu:

Geelong were off their game today, but all credit to the boys, they wanted the win badly and hunted the ball as good as can be.

Well maybe they off their game with their goal kicking in the second half but they were dispirited from the whack of intensity the Crow boys inflicted on them in the first quarter. I thought Geelong may recover going into the 2nd 1/4 but credit to our guys, they never did.

I'm choosing to believe that this win was not because Geelong in their traditional build up for the 'business end of the season' ( a la Bombers etc) may treat occasional interstate early-season games with less committment. It was because we stopped them in their tracks in the early formative part of the game.

My cynicism re the umpires was unfounded......they actually did pay frees to Tippo, who is almost always plays in front of opponents and is regularly infringed. The one decision I felt a stomach sinking foreboding re the umpiring for the day, was the one for Podsiadly against Talia early in the first 1/4.........but it was no omen, the umpiring was fair on the day.

The umpiring in the first q was rubbish. Jenkins should have been paid two frees close to goal and there were others that made me think we were in for another caning from the umps. They improved after the 1st q. In fact, I thought we got a few we didn't deserve for a change.
It was good to see Tippett get paid legitimate frees he usually does not receive.

5aa just mentioned Tippett might be in trouble for something? Anyone see it? I certainly didn't.

I didn't see it, but a free kick was paid behind the ball which Geelong took the advantage anyway. Keiran Nicholls saw it so look out.

Edit: Umpire was Shane McInerney

mmm... yeah. Actually I thought he was reported as the ump was doing a lot of talking and pointing to the players involved while the ball was quickly transferred down the southern end toward Geelong's forward 50.

You can bet Rooch will be all over it. Rest assured he will make the incident known to the appropriate authorities.

It wasn't really. It favoured us. But the standard of umpiring was generally better than last week.

I thought we got far more of those 50/50 calls than we normally get. I also think there was a clear directive to the umpires to watch how both Walker and Tippett were handled because they both received frees that they normally wouldn't.
I actually think we had the rub of the umps this week.

And I am as one eyed as you can get.

Also, Geelong stuffed up a fair few times. Twice in fact, they had what should have been an uncontested mark around 20m out, and two Geelong guys spoiled each other.

Not that it mattered to the result, we smashed the cats.

Also the 50 that Tippett got was rubbish, i think it was Mackie, fumbled the ball and didn't chase it rather than taking possession and and not returning it to Tippett.

He had the ball in his hands and just dropped it on the ground once the free was paid so he could run back and man up one of our players running into the forward line. It's a 50 metre penalty all the time. If you have possession and drop it on the ground instead of giving it back to the player, it's a clear free. It was a stupid thing to do.

He didn't have possession of it though. It was never controlled in his hands.

He sort of went to pick it up and fumbled it, then ran off.

Now, you could argue that he fumbled it on purpose and he may well have, but this was an assumption from the umpire and a wrong call IMO. It's like when a player has to kick the ball 30+ metres back to an opposition player for him to take a free kick.

The kick goes a bit off target - deliberate or not? Very difficult to tell and umpires shouldn't guess IMO.

He did have his hands on it, and that is what will get you in trouble if you don't then completely take it in possession and give it back. If you allow it to drop back down to the ground again, it's a free. It's not a wrong call. The simple rule is, don't even attempt to go near a 'dead ball', let the opposition get it themselves.
