Game plan

Not sure if anyone else has noticed but there are a few cracks starting to appear in the game plan over the last 4 or so weeks. I know it is early days but there are a couple of issues.
First up we are starting to get too many playing pointing and not enough positioning or picking up, a sign that players are getting out of position and falling away from the plan. Watching the game on Friday night there was no pointing going on between Geelong and the Pies, just players getting to their set spots.
Secondly we are letting sides escape through the middle of the ground very easily, there is an over commitment on the forward press and sides are starting really run out the back of it with ease.

I know we are sitting third but seriously if we where playing any sort of half decent side last night we would have been blown off the park. Forget about it being interstate or not having won there for 10 years, Brisbane are as bad as you will come up against at the moment and we made them look good for a long while.
If we bring the same shit against the Tigers this week they will smash us !!

One thing I have noticed is that we could make a team out of the amount of HBF's we have on our list, that can't be a bad thing.

Also, remember Ant, it's our first year on the gameplan we're not going to be doing things perfectly yet. It takes a while for any routine to set in.

But yes, well spotted sir :)

Jesus Brissy Havent Been That Bad This Year Honestly

2011 Gameplan >>> 2010 Gameplan

Hirdy Needs Time Too Mature The Plan , So Far Its Working so yeah

Transition defense needs work, too many token chases when the oppositions beats our zone. For all his faults alwyn Davey's speed to apply true or perceived pressure maybe needed.

Lack of composure going forward the long kick forward is great but not at the expense of a safer shorter option. We are burning guys that are free to kick to a 1 on 2 or 2 on 3 contest.

Sheesh... settle down folks.

We gave Brissie their second biggest loss this season and biggest at home. We got it into our fwd line 75 times and they stacked the numbers.

WE WERE YOUNGER THAN THEM. Don't worry about what Wallsy was bleating on about but we were less experienced games wise and younger in age.

We have 14 players under 50 games and they had 12.

Our depth is being tested and hence our structures might fall down a little. Doesn't matter what happens today but Tiges next week is a serious danger game.

Could be a massive effort and the stamp that says we are here.

I agree Kelvin, but I think you're taking the OP and responses the wrong way. It's not overreacting, it's merely pointing out specific things that need to be worked on. Yes it may be obvious that we always have things to work on, but I think Ant just wanted to put it out there and see what people think.

I'm not so worried personally, as I always thought it would take the collective players at least a year to have Hird's instructon embedded into their habits.

Agree with the second part of ANT's assessment - About teams moving the ball through the corridor - Although in saying that - Will be happy if teams can only enter the forward 50 - 30 to 35 times per game.

If Reimers is anything to go by, I don't think you need to worry about the boys focusing on their structures.

I'd be more worried about the quality of our ball going into the 50, while its valuable to get it in quickly it's also worth finding specific targets from time to time. At the moment we seem to focus on just kicking it high to a pack, which makes are pretty inefficient when we enter our 50.

This is what I noticed, especially in the first half. The second half produced more crumbs in our favor.

Wish we had Pears playing.

Have to laugh when people say the wheels are falling off, we are suffering from fatigue.

Destroyed Brisbane around the ground - 75 Inside 50's - You need intensity to lock it up in the forward line for so long.

Posters are complaining about lack of penetration in our forward 50 - Agree that it could have been better last night - But if you have a deep entry into the forward 50 - Makes it harder for the defence to rebound - hence why Brisbane couldn't clear the ball.

It is very well a risk/reward strategy.

Agree. We are very defensive the way he go forward - there is a real emphasis on limiting the amount of goals from turnovers. That's why we bomb it to the pocket so often.

We've had a few injuries and we're working with a new game plan. Shouldn't players be helping each other to get into the correct position?

I would prefer that players looked for other options when going into attack rather than bomb it in. A few times we missed easy short options and went the harder (longer) way.

I'm probably missing the point of the original post, but, they were flooding like the Mississippi so I can't say I'm that concerned about our forward efficiency. We locked them in, forced the turnovers, and kicked enough goals to win comfortably - job well done as far as I'm concerned.

Last night we were bombing into the forward 50, instead of lowering our vision and simply hitting an assured target. We were no doubt playing like millionaires for the majority of the mach last night, the intensity of previous matches was certainly not there; but we still comfortably assured the 4pts away from home. Only a good team can do that.

Don't think we, supporters, can take much from the game last night as it was just a solid, ugly & cruisy win. The Saints were famous for those over the past few years and made Grand Finals in consecutive years. Pretty football is not always good football.

Do not take it the wrong way as we are playing well but what i see is what i see. I rarely sit around and watch a game as a supporter. I always tend to watch the things we can do better, where the opposition scores from or how they get on top rather than simply barracking . Just the coaching side of me that always comes out.

Yes there are all sorts of reasons why it happens but the simple fact is if you sit down and watch the games sides have been able to score against us because we allow them free run through the middle.
Is it currently a problem ? well no not a huge one as we have been winning. Will it be a problem ? well i do not think we would want to let too many of the better sides have control of the middle and let them have free run to kick to one on one contests in the forward line.

People can keep their head in the sand as much as they want but how many times have i been way off the mark with game trends since i have been posting here ?
If i can see it then i am dam sure opposition coaches have seen it and it looks like they are acting on it given the way they are setting player positioning in the middle of the ground.
