Cos that's how footy clubs are measured. Where are they at round 20 .

If tonight was a one off . I wouldn't complain.

It's the same shite over and over. Surely by now you'd think they'd understand the value of composure and kicking the ball thru white sticks.

Yet again they train 5 nights a week and are on 6figured contract .

And at times it is hang your head embarrassing amateur stuff .

Pat on the back all you like. But nothing will change while you do .

Btw forget about tonight we played really well against Carlton . Sighs !!

Your comments are warranted, Macgruber, but don't you see the reality of this year's fixture? There are no dominant teams. We are in the race. We just have to sort out our structures and we become very much competitive. We are definitely a more scoring team than we have been in the past. I'll be the first to decry our team if we aren't looking good by Round 20. Be patient.

Sister loved the game, wouldn't leave during the song and got snippy when I suggested we leave to catch the train since it'll take a while. Needless to say we made the train with 2mins to spare and the first words out of her mouth were "sorry, I didn't expect that many people". Ah the naivety a newbie takes to the footy, when I say "sea of people up your clacker" she thinks I mean a few dribs and drabs. Utterly precious. :D Anyway, gone through the thread first..

Thought Montagna's attempted 70m switch kick that fell short to Goddard completely changed the momentum of this game... Shithouse decision by Joey

Call me oldschool but hit the friggin boundary line... ie: kick it down the line on the skinny side, not friggin risky 70m kicks across goal...

Correct decision, poor execution, we were out if clean possessionw as taken as we had the overlap all the way to about 35m out on that flank and all that was needed was BJ taking it and lobbing it over. Instead, contested situation and you're automatically caught massively out of position. Shit you not, BJ had the boundary line and about 40m to the nearest bloke in the centre it was that safe an option to take, Joey just pushed the kick far too forward.

Hats off to Newnes tonight. Courage and judgement under pressure personified.

F'ing brilliant he was, when he needed to make a contest , clunk a grab or put in an effort he was there doing it and busting a nut to spread as well. The kids brilliant. :thumbsu:

Maggots cost you the game. You guys can't say it to loudly for the fear of being called sooks, unlike the Tigers fans who already have a 3 page thread on their board about it, but **** me they mauled you tonight.

Horrendous.

The reason I quoted this was re Milnes trip, ump actually blew whistle in same motion as throwing arms up to cancel it for play on. Absolutely baffled me as it's either a blatant a trip or a "my bad, I stuffed it" and bounce since it was a contested situation. Play on was the wrong call as soon as that whistle went.

My view is he absolutely NO defensive pressure whether he is in the foward or back line. Give him a spell in the 2's and tell him to get a bit of aggro. The only bloke I know with tatts and no c**t.

HBF trending to Centre & wingman, started on Nahas which is a catch 22 as no one was able to tackle him properly the entire night, certainly gave multiple efforts and a few elbows to cite he's got nothing.

You're not serious? Gram only gets the ball to kick if its given to him, never when he's earned it. We can't afford a defensive back to be a permanent receiver.

Gram got the ball chiefly due to the fact that he ran and spread all night, as opposed to someone like Dal who consistently had one effort and gave up chasing towards the end. Straight through the centre corridor, cardinal sin where defensive efforts and pressure is needed and it's not Gram but Dal that gives up. This does not fly for me, you are out there to give an effort, I don't give two shits if they waltz in and 99.99% of the time it ends in a goal to the Tigers, you bloody well chase and make them earn it if you want to be called a footballer.

Gram kicked two goals in the last quarter where he slipped away and was unattended in the style of game being played. I did not see him in the last quarter laying tackles or being defensive in the forward line. I'm not getting stuck in to him, I'm just providing the facts. Sure, there are others worth scrutinising.

Talking of slipping away, on a consistent basis Richmond had an extra number behind the ball filling the space in front of Rooey which was often the method of extraction from "on the spot" decisions, ours got sucked into the contest. I'd see Joey line up at the bounce on this person and then run in to the contest, this remained during our kick outs as they'd have one about 20m in front and one right up his arse.

Yet why did we rarely have a clean takeaway from a kick in despite this extra number?

Put bluntly we were behind all night, we needed someone to gamble for our sakes because he game dictated that, well, shit, we needed 3 unanswered goals to hit the front during the last. Gram rolled the dice, he was the only one seemingly willing to do so and go "screw it" and risk being burned on the flipside. It came off, we hit the front on the back of this, reverted to what we were doing and once again they kicked away. What we needed was someone else, be it BJ or Dal to start defensive side of the square, gut bust forward and just roll the dice to get a buffer zone of more than a single kick. It didn't happen obviously, and yet we see Armo doing it way too late and clunking one.

Your facts are rather shit TBH.

Yep top 8 is all anyone needs to give it a shake.

On Raph, I reckon he'd be decent in the forward half. Not a fan of him the back half because he, like Gilbert, takes the game on, which is fine, but then rarely pulls it off and puts us in massive trouble. As does their inconsistent disposal. Really don't want both of there at the same time, too similar. But with Saad, Milera, Cripps and Siposs probably too much mid sized competition there already for anyone to try it out.

Don't reckon we'll get too many changes next week, Cripps for Schneider looks favourable. How bad are orbital fractures? Because Newnes threw a serious spanner in the works with his performance.

Btw, i just want to point out Gilbert's 64DT and 92SC points. Must've done something right.

Excellent summary, St Fly....

Gram should be played as a half forward and not a half back.

He's a good goal kicker but is too sloppy in defence, he may have kicked a couple of goals in the last quarter but he probably gave away just as many in defence before that.

What about Centrebet Plugger?

Do you reckon they should go as a sponsor?

What I learnt from last night.

The Positives:

1. Milera and Saad, heavenly sent Saints. Isn't it wonderful to see players in the forward whose job it is to actually score goals

2. Our midfield has a great future, post Lenny... lets pray not for a time yet

3. Jason Blake, we needed two of him... one to ruck and the other to keep Jack goaless

4. Our style of play, we can win a Grand Final by taking the initiative and playing attacking football not waiting for the opposition to make mistakes

5. Our supporters and our cheer squad, anyone at the game would know we nearly took the roof of the stadium

6. Our gun players to come back in and maybe the imminent return of the mercurial Raph Clarke... all saints supporters know this guy is a talent but can they be harnessed for good and not evil

7. Its not September yet! Look how far we have come in ten rounds... just wait another ten and see where we are

The Not so Positive:

1. Dropping games we should have won, thats four this year... Port, Freo, Eagles and Tigers. When you get your noses in front Sainters... keep going, the jobs not over.

2. Deflating mistakes, we seem to be on top with all the momentum and then someone makes a critically stupid error and you can feel the momentum shifting straight away.

Really was an amazing game! The Tiges ability to cut through the midfield and look dangerous every forward thrust was worrying. Our back line had a stinker tonite, let's be honest.
Gwilt - struggled second game back
Simpkin - had 4 kicked on him in quick time
Gilbert - his complete inability to use his right side has him questioning nearly every possession. Looks like his mind is muddled to the point of indecision!
Jones - I hope Scotty has realised, if the Tagee goes into the forward line, Let a defender pick him up!!!
Dempster - please play on the small/mid forwards!!
Newnes - looked startled early, but did well by games end.

We badly need Fish & Blakey back there, Gears would've helped on Nahas too!

Midfield looked ok in patches (generally when running forward) but looked tired pushing back. E.g. When Delidio snuck on thru the I/gate deep in the last qtr to make a 2 on 1 against Gilbo, Dempster pushed up to make a 2 on 2, leaving Jack R free inside 50. BJ was standing at HBF and didn't/couldn't push back to cover Jack, resulting in the easiest goal.

The overall desire for the contest was down in some players IMO. Jonesy was terrible, he just didn't look at the pill!!! It was driving me nuts, I counted 3 occasions when he could've got his hands on the ball, but wasn't watching the ball and was beaten to it.

I thought the forward line was pretty good tbh. Wasn't Kosi's best game, milney as well.

A few might need a break this week...cripps, Milne, Milera, Gilbert. In Schnides, Raph, Ledger, Gears

Remember we are coming off out third six day in a row. If you want to rage at someone, then rage at the AFL.

Yeah it was terrible scheduling and was always going to catch up with us at some stage, it wasn't just the three 6 day breaks it was the fact that we had a trip to Perth as well played in 26 degree heat and all 3 games were against tough opposition.

You could see against the Swans that we tired in the last quarter and were just lucky that we had a big enough lead to hang on and in last night's game our players were struggling to provide their usual energy and run. Our mids especially were all down on their usual output, none of Hayes, Steven, Dal Santo and Montagna had great games and were out run by the Richmond mids. I think a lot of that had to do with the three 6 day breaks, against Carlton we had a lot more energy and run.

Still we had our opportunities to win it, wasting chances in front of goal cost us again like it has in all our losses this year. If we can fix that and get our best 22 on the park then we are capable of beating anyone.

I'm not going to patronise you lads saying how well you played etc etc. Fact is we won. You lost. However what a match. What a great great game. Next time we meet will be box office for anyone who wants his footy hard fast and great entertainment.

Best win Richmond have had in years beating a serious proper team down the straight.

Knowing we can beat anyone, and actually beating them, is now a gap 16 premiership points wide with the season not even half done. It's time for harder questions to be asked.
