Just fwiw and maybe a reason to go back and get my ears blown off by awesomeness. What are these 'war tapes' that I keep hearing about?

War tapes is an in game sound setting.

From memory there is stereo, 5.1 cinema and war tapes.

War tapes puts all the emphasis into gunfire and explosions etc, also has alot more volume variation depending on distance and crap loads more detail... Mate if a 120mm tank shell hits nearby you bloody well know about it! :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

Dunno if you can watch youtube through psn to take advantage of your sweet Astros???

whooaaa, war tapes does sound shit loads better.

the best sound in a game i've ever heard would still have to be MGS4 though....simply blew me away! not only that but the graphics at the time were also the best available. (on console)

ODST for me. Then again all Bungie games have a great score.

i wasn't talking about the score.
i was meaning the in game sounds.....seriously epic in MGS4.

uncompressed in game sounds ftw! (bc2 is also uncompressed pretty certain)

halo games certainly have amazing scores though :thumbsu:

Ahh my bad. Then yeah Wartapes FTW. :)

Got my X41 headset a few weeks ago - took me a a few plays to get used to surround sound with just 2 speakers but now i luv it and now i can play after the missus goes to bed with decent sound. I highly recommend them

yeh not only do they give superior sound but you don't annoy anyone while having it nice and loud which is the best thing about them imo :thumbsu:
(the reason i got them is for when i move into my appartment in 4 months so not to disturb)

it also doesn't hurt that the boom mic on my astros are basically the best gaming mic available

Sony getting into it now with their pair of impressive seeming, relatively cheap, but butt ugly looking headsets.

The headset features 7.1 virtual surround sound, a retractable mic, and wireless connectivity via USB adapter. Volume and mute controls are easily accessible, as to not distract you from intense gaming sessions. Even more impressive, the PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset allows you to keep track of battery life and sound levels by way of on-screen status updates.

When released, the official PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset can be yours for $99.99US.
On this note too. How is everyone going with theirs? I haven't had mine on for a while tbh, nothing overly in the need for them. But will be cracking them out for inFAMOUS 2, DNF and hopefully Portal 2 (whenever I get that:p).

Havn't played the ps3/360 that much in the last monthish to even bother with mine truthfully, although i have a couple of games (Dead Space, Metro 2033 ) that will get a run with the Trittons, mainly just for the atmosphere when i get around to playing them

absolutely hideous headsets....kinda surprising it's so ugly since their bluetooth headset thingo is actually pretty decent looking.

also mine are going awesome still.
use it every time i play a shooter or epic single player games.

don't really bother for games like afl live though...if i used it on that i'd probs think they were broken in game with **** all happening and hearing those two songs over and over and over and over and over would make me want to break them!

Nice little article on how/whether Gaming Headsets can make you a better player. Uses Battlefield and Call of Duty as examples.

Gaming headsets aren't just for PC and competitive console gamers anymore. More and more gamers are using them to completely immerse themselves and enhance their in-game experience. Can you become a little better by using a gaming headset?

Read on @ Source.

thought i'd give this a bump with mw3 and bf3 on the way

people who are into their fps and don't have one should give this thread a read and have a bit of a look into it.
nothing quite like playing an fps with the headsets on :thumbsu:

Yeah just bought a headset. I am hearing footsteps everywhere in cod at the moment, it's throwing me off a bit actually, have to get used to the great sound.

Even just regular games now are stepping up their game.

Uncharted 3's beta has some incredible sounds that can only really be appreciated with the headsets on.

Batman: Arkham City...well I can't play this without the headsets. Everything from the voice acting, to the music to the sound effects. This is a game made for headsets! There's one specific side mission that I completed last night that when you get to the area to find them the music kicks in and it's just incredible, phenomenal stuff. I even love the sound when you get an upgrade.:p

FIFA 12 also has good reason to chuck the headsets on now. The crowd noises are louder and better. The commentary is great as usual. The music in the menu's is also arguably the best there's ever been in a FIFA game.

yeah...i think with mw3 it will be awesome again because the sound is definitely improved from what i've heard so far (trying to match it with battlefields biggest advantage over it) and the perks lend itself well to hearing footsteps again.

pretty sure you've been playing mw2 which sound was fine in but in blops sound whoring was borderline useless.
worst....sound.....ever!

Okay, with BF3 coming out I need some cans, I play on consoles and PC, have a $200 visa to use up, happy to walk into a store so I can use them on release.
What should I look at?

I hope I'm not sounding like a super lazy ****

You can get the TB PX21's if you are not fussed about the wireless side of things. Work on both major consoles and PC

Leaves you with $80-$100 for another game too :)
