Ganguly banned for six matches

April 12, 2005

Sourav Ganguly has been banned for six matches after India fell behind with their over-rate yet again today.

Chris Broad, the match referee, informed the Indian team management before they announced the squad for the remaining two matches. Rahul Dravid will captain the side in Ganguly's absence.

"This is the second match in succession that India has not bowled its overs within the required timeframe and no excuse was offered by the captain," Broad said in a statement. "I made Ganguly aware of the potential penalties at the previous hearing and it is unfortunate that this warning was not heeded."

In addition to the ban, Ganguly, as captain, was fined 30% of his match fee for the slow over rate. The other Indian players were fined 15% of their match fees.

Goutam Dasgupta, the BCCI's joint secretary, said that he had yet to receive official notification.

Ganguly was fined 70% of his match fee after the previous game at Jamshedpur, and has been punished for being a repeat offender. At a hearing conducted at the ground at the end of the game Ganguly was penalised and as this is his second breach of this provision within 12 months, the penalty is automatically upgraded from Level 2 to a Level 3 breach under the ICC Code.

Sridharan Sriram, who claimed five wickets, including a hat-trick, in Tamil Nadu's win in the semi-finals of the Ranji one-day tournament today, was included in the side in Ganguly's place. The selectors also decided to pick Anil Kumble for the final two games, and have left out Irfan Pathan.

Great news for Indian cricket fans. Ganguly has had a terrible run recently and has underperformed as a batsman and captain. His series stats read 0, 9, 4 and 18. His 18 was the worst of these innings, them off 33 balls in a match where both teams scored 300+ runs in 48 overs. He was too slow and too conservative. His last ODI century against a non minnow country was Sep 2002.

His ultra conservative batting in the 2nd test opened the door for Pakistan to draw. His ultra conservative captaincy on the last day of the 3rd test resulted in a batting collapse and a win to Pakistan. Sehwag was run out on that last day and afterwards said he knew India could not win without him, they had no batsmen who could score the required 3-4 runs an over.

India have announced a squad for the final games that excludes him with Mongia likely to take his place. Unfortunately for Ganguly he is just a few runs short of 10000 in ODIs. India may bring him back after his suspension just to let him reach that milestone.

And so the bastard should be suspended for that much.

He's the worst of all captains in the International Cricket. He should already have planned and know how to manage his time. To be six overs behind is ghastly.

Surprise surprise

Ganguly appeals against six-match ban
Cricinfo staff
April 13, 2005

Sourav Ganguly, the Indian captain, has appealed against the six-match ban imposed on him by the International Cricket Council for India's slow over rates in the current one-day series against Pakistan. A media release confirmed that the ICC had received formal notice of the appeal late afternoon London time.

This means that Ganguly is eligible to play India's fifth one-dayer against Pakistan at Kanpur on April 15. Under the code of conduct the ICC will appoint a commissioner to adjudicate the appeal within 48 hours. After this commissioner is appointed, and hears from the relevant parties (including Chris Broad, the match referee who imposed the ban) he has seven days to reach his verdict. The appeals commissioner has the power to increase or decrease the penalty as he sees fit.

The ICC has not yet announced who the commissioner will be, but the person will be drawn from the following list: Michael Beloff QC, Chairman of the ICC Code of Conduct Commission, Richie Benaud, Sir Oliver Popplewell, Tim Castle, Gamini Marapana, Justice Albie Sachs, Justice Anthony Lucky, Clive Barnes.

This will be the second time Ganguly has come before an appeals commissioner. The last time around Tim Castle adjudicated when Clive Lloyd, the match referee, handed Ganguly a two-Test ban in November after India failed to bowl their overs in time in the Platinum Jubilee one-dayer against Pakistan at Kolkata. On that occasion Castle set aside the ban.

Ganguly is appealing, which you would expect, and this makes him eligable to play the 5th ODI match. His ban can be increased or decreased on appeal though the maximum penalty for his breach is 8 games so it can only go up by two games. He has 9967 career ODI runs so he had better score 33 in the 5th ODI game or he may never get another chance!

India's next scheduled ODI series is in Sri Lanka in August followed by the 10 nations super series in Australia in Oct. A 6 match ban means he may miss out on both tours.

We all agree, all indians agree. I know an indian guy that used to worship him...hates his guts now.
Same here, was speaking to an Indian guy last night that said it serves him right. he also said that India wouldn't bother appealing, it seems since then that Ganguly has appealed himself.

Some confusion now as Ganguly did not travel to Kanpur with the team and he may not play in the 5th odi, despite being eligable. He is also eligable for the 6th odi game so the selectors may give him a rest until then to get his mind right.

Most team captains are behind on over rates about once or twice a year. To be so far behind for two games in a row in unprecendented. He gets almost half his overs from spinners and Pakistan are playing under the same conditions with the same balance of bowlers and have made the overs each time. I can't imagine what his excuse is. ICC needs to uphold that ban to prevent this from continuing.

The BCI told him that he wouldn't be playing in the 5th ODI even though he was eligible. Sort of similar to Ramanauskas, his injury saved him from being dropped.

About bloody time, this guy is a serial offender.
To be honest, I don't think the penalty was hard enough.

Match-after-match he is always overboard. And not by 1 to 2 overs, but usually 3 to 4. In this case a massive 6!

No point appealing. His penalty won't be decreased. What would be good is if they penalised him further for appealing - making the suspension out as far as 7 to 8 matches.

That would teach him. Slow bastard.

ICC upheld the ban on appeal. The two matches he missed in the Pakistan series will count so he has four more games to miss. India lost the ODI series 4-2 after being 2-0 ahead with top order batting collapses and mediocre bowling.
