Game Day Gather Round 2023

I just assume the coin toss was for the neutral teams.

It's a fair question, though - I mean obviously both SA teams are playing at their home ground, but if you want to get tiggy-touchwood about it, maybe all the Gather Round games are "neutral" and "home things" like jumpers have to be tossed for. It's unavoidable that 2 teams will be "playing at home", but maybe the AFL - quite reasonably - decided that they would still toss a coin for "home jumper" etc. Some would say that's a figleaf for the genuine home ground advantage, but hey, that's unavoidable.

Unless we play Gather Round in - I dunno - China.

At the outset I was on the positive side of neutral about Gather Round as a concept, but I have to say that as it approaches and I see all the buildup, I'm much more positive / enthusiastic.

I'll even backtrack on my initial "roll eyes" about the name "Gather Round". Yeah, it's all right

Should have been a March thing. Though that’s probably too early in the season. And it’s also the only month where anything happens in Adelaide.

Maybe that’s the best time to get people into the state?

I've been on a rollarcoaster.

The concept = Had me high
The fixture release = Had me down
But the buildup = Back on a high.

When the fixture was released for this round most people agreed there were a lot of dud match ups. Turns out somehow it is not the case and yet they are whingeing about unfairness. We do need to make sure we get the catering correct at Norwood. I suspect there will be a lot of whinging if supporter are in beer and food lines for too long. Norwood is not friendly to any sort of crowd. Toilet facilities will be stretched.

The success of these events or marquee games is almost always determined by whether the first game is close

If it's a cliffhanger How good is Gather Round?! The concept is a hit. It's here to stay

If it's a blow out Well Gather Round looks like a bit of a fizzer
