I tell you what G, if Taylor could handball like Dunstan, I'd be all over him like a fat kid on a chocolate cake.

Here's my preference, in order:

1. Blake Acres
2. Lewis Taylor
3. Zak Jones

I'd be over the moon with either of 1 and 2, and still very pleased with 3. Jones is the reliable, hardworking type - doesn't have much x-factor about him. Better for the club in the long run you'd have to think, but less 'wow!' factor.

Not great athletically and only a reasonable kick.
I watched him play live earlier in the year and they were exactly my observations. To be fair to the kid, he was playing in the SANFL seniors for Woodville-West Torrens against North Adelaide who are a top side, and whilst he wasn't embarrassed at all, I thought that he looked a bit out of his depth. That's no knock on him, he'll develop into a solid AFL player, but he had limitations which weren't limited to just being a youngster. He went in hard, had a crack and got possessions, I just didn't think that he was an effective user of the ball. He also had a couple of pings at the sticks via set shots, which from memory being about 45 metres out, didn't go close to getting through - slight crosswind notwithstanding.

I won't be upset if we draft him, but there are reasons why he's potentially not even a first round pick, let alone in the top 5.

I'm in the Acres corner for #16 but wouldn't be disappointed if we get Dunstan , if people are likening him to Jobe Watson we could do an awful lot worse.
Robertson is the potentially elite slider IMHO. Stats are very good and his running is off the chart as Meto points out. He is also a freaking beast at 190cm and >90kgs. Has also had a shoulder but looks well over that now, Dockers would be salivating.....we need to pull the trigger at #36

Really I wouldn't be disappointed with Dunstan, Acres, Dumont, Gardiner or even Kelly :)

In what world would we select a tall forward in this draft?

If he is the second best key forward available behind Boyd you would have to consider it.

Hawkins - injury concern
Pods - gone
Kersten - more of a 3rd tall
Walker - a long range rookie selection who has been ok
Vardy - injury concerns / is he a ruckman, a forward or just average at both
Hamling - maybe a defender
Brown - maybe a defender

They may back in the existing midfielders like GHS, Smedts, Stringer, Caddy, Schroder or they may have some Wells smokies at 36 and 41 that could add to the midfield.

Interesting how Dumont seems to have totally dropped out of first round calculations, particularly given his SANFL campaign.

Are we are reading too much into the Thurlow example? We did not have another pick until the 70s, and up until the last hours of trading were chasing two picks in the twenties. So it was perhaps more that Wells was forced to go early, rather than trying to ramp up his reputation for being a sage. :D

I also feel like it is too easy to be seduced by bulk, with all the talk of monsters. We do need midfield muscle, but we have the depth to hothouse players for 2-4 years. Bulk can be added, but it's hard to add a good head, whether that means character or footy brain or both.

Pick 16: Blake Acres - although I also agree with Turbo at (#695) and The HonestyPolicy who say it is too obvious - but he is beautiful of both feet and will be an absolute champion. Stands out in a crowd - well, a small crowd of 36.

Pick 36: Darcy Lang, also mentioned by Yearofthecat and Emma Quayle, but it does seem like we are not into Taylor and he has class. Er, typed that before I read her picks, which have just gone up. Damn it, I'm sticking with Lang: agree with those who feel that Micky Turner was selling taylor too hard (the 'good as Bartel/Ablett/anyone ever remarks are in Inside Footy.

Pick 41: Josh Pitman, thought I was coming from left field with this one but Rodriguez Mendoza is all over it.

Rookies: Aliir Aliir (KPD, Harry Taylor's old club, Farmer2Goggin has mentioned), Scott Jones (ruck from East Perth Turbocat has mentioned); Alex Pearce (KPD from Devonport); Zak Webster (versatile Tassie player, 180) and Errin Wasley Black, also versatile.

would be ecstatic to get even one of these right.

Surely we would take Sully, if available, in the rookie draft over Aliir Aliir?

Quayle's mock is interesting in that if it plays out as she has it we have the choice of some pretty handy types at 16. Taylor, Acres, Jones, Dumont and Dunstan are all still on the table. I'm not sure we would have expected that. Although they will endure some short to medium term pain, the Saints should pick up some nice players this draft.

16 GEELONG: LEWIS TAYLOR
(Geelong Falcons, 175cm, 75kg)
Zippy, zig-zagging midfielder who gets the ball moving and brings energy to his team.
THE RATIONALE: A very talented player, who the Cats probably didn't expect would reach their pick. Taylor is quick, innovative and always on the move and looking for something to do. He'll add a point of difference to their young midfield group, and is dangerous playing forward too.
THE COMPLICATION: He could be gone, with the Giants the biggest chance to grab him. George Hewett is the sort of tall, well-balanced midfielder the Cats like, and they've done plenty of work on midfielders Blake Acres and Zak Jones. Should Cameron McCarthy reach this pick they'd have to take a very long look.

17 FREMANTLE: CAMERON McCARTHY
(South Fremantle, 194cm, 83kg)
An athletic, active key forward who can take a pack mark.
THE RATIONALE: The Dockers have resisted spending early draft picks on key talls in recent years. Their patience will have well and truly paid off should McCarthy make it through to their pick. He's a natural forward who reads the ball well and knows how to take a pack mark.
THE COMPLICATION: McCarthy may be have been chosen, with Geelong the biggest threat. He's also be considered by Collingwood and Brisbane as a top 10 pick. If so the Dockers are likely to grab another local, midfielder Blake Acres, with Lewis Taylor and Zak Jones outside chances too.

Emma Quayle just lost all credibility...

How does Taylor's height vary across all these Phantom Drafts? I've seen from 172 to 175 now...

Also, "zig-zagging" might be the best description yet.

Seems to do a lot of pointless running.

yeah no I'm not sure. We know that one of the Wells signatures is improvement. i have only seen tapes of the VFL games, but not sure it is there. But you're right that the club also does try to take a VFL player.

Just think he'd be able to play at AFL level more or less immediately, whereas Aliir is at least 2, if not more years away...

His official height, taken at the combine I assume, is 175. I think I had his stats from mid year, or earlier in the year, when he was 172.

Notice that every time you see him do this, one of more of the players chasing him / getting side stepped around either fall over, or just stand there and don't even bother to chase. He's that quick.

I notice him running backwards and sideways, handballing to stationary blokes and then running past, getting back and doing it again.

Do not want.
