I would be happy with a inside mid but tactically it makes no sense given almost all those guys would be there at 14-blakely,bampton,gore etc. The upgrade has to be about getting a guy who wont be there at 14 and the 5-15 group is quick inside/outside mids-pickett,weller,laverde,ahern,it has to come from that group imo

The discussion I've read around draft picks seems to have Ahern later 1st round, early second. Laverde I assume goes earlier. The name that seems to fall into place for 10 is Pickett. Would certainly make sense with the loss of Christensen and Varcoe, both fast players capable of palying running outside roles.

I'm convinced it's Pickett we are after. He would be ready to play next year I think too. We can still look at a couple of contested mids with our later picks - someone like Gore could easily fall to 47, otherwise Billy Evans, who hasn't received much publicity, may be worth a look at.

Off the Phantom Draft board.
Pick 11 - West Coast: Jarrod Pickett (WA, Line breaking wingman)

180 cm, 68 kg, 18/8/96
Range: Top 15
Style: Lewis Jetta
Comparison: Leroy Jetta

Pickett is a line breaking wingman who has exceptional pace, agility, evasion and acceleration and a natural instinct to run, carry, take on the game and break lines. He just loves to run and run fast. By foot he's generally good with most of his kicks effective however lacking penetration. He's able to hit the scoreboard from the middle and when forward pops up for a goal or two. At senior WAFL level he's hit the scoreboard consistently. He's a reasonable reader of the tap and able to use his speed to win a clearance and break away from traffic. He's also got a good vertical leap and a real desire to fly for pack marks.

While he's able to win his own ball occasionally at the tap he struggles to do so in open play, preferring to seagull outside the pack or run from behind for the handball receive. Loose ball gets in space inflate his contested possession numbers. He doesn't work hard for his outside possessions either, rarely gut running to get into possession, instead only taking possession when fed to him. Pickett has no desire to defend, when not in play he runs around doing as he pleases and letting his opponent get off the chain. He'll tackle relatively well when he has no other option but in general his pressure is nonexistent instead preferring to lightly jog around. At ground level while he's capable of exceptionally skilled pickups he is also prone to fumbling regulation gathers. Given his lack of defensive running he's a below average accumulator. While the possessions hurt, there's not enough of them to get away with what his direct opponent also does due to his lack of defence.

On ability Pickett has the tools to be a slightly slower but in general better player than Lewis Jetta. If his defensive running improves along with his work rate then he'll definitely get there. However it seems his laziness is more natural than learned and even in an AFL system it'll be difficult to train a real work ethic into him which could mean he ends up a real frustration of a player in the Leroy Jetta mold.

Going off that assessment, No thanks!

If we stuck with pick 14, both GWS and FREO would have select KPDs ahead of us.

I do think we require outside pace so Weller, Pickett and Cockatoo are in range. Cockatoo just offers that size to go back in defence, or be a midfield gun.

Now only GWS is ahead and likely to acquire Lever and or Durdin. GCFC are sneaky chance to acquire a KPD, but I think Laverde offers something different for their list.

Despite Balme's comments of selecting mids at the draft, our top pick could be Lever or Durdin.

I think it's safe to say that Blakely and DeGoey will not be used for pick 10, as pick 14 would've landed them.

I still think weller is a big show but yes jumping wc indicates pickett is a big show if he isnt gone by 9.

Peopls need to temper expextations, physically he needs a few kgs on him so i doubt he can be best 22 straight up,will play some games not all.

But i think in 3-4 years he will be a steal for whoever gets him

The way I see it, we will either get one of Weller, Pickett or Laverde. If we don't get one of those, it means either Durdin or Lever have slipped and we'll take one of them.

Win/win on face value.

It won't make sense for us to have upgraded if we go for a Cookatoo, De Goey, Blakely type as we could have had them with 14 I reckon. Has to be one of the five mentioned above I think.

An alternative to a DeGoey type of player is James Rose from SA, refer to my earlier posts on him on page 8. Athletically, he performed slightly better than DeGoey at the draft combine. Rose posted 2.97sec for 20m sprint, 14.6 beep and 73cm standing vertical jump, all better than DeGoey. He is a tough and strong marking medium forward that has the endurance to develop into a rotating midfielder. He will be in range with picks 40 to rookie. Think of a tough version of a cross between Hartman and GHS, and that's Rose.

I don't see much from so far away….but on highlights, Weller looks classier to me. Was really impressed with his distribution, and seems to have good pace.

Presume it will be out of Pickett, Laverde and Weller….if we snap up one of them, I think we will have done well.

I get the feeling that Cockatoo will be the one they are after. Like Bontempelli last year every time he gets mentioned he goes up a couple of spots. Blakely is the only genuine inside midfielder mentioned in the top 20 hopefuls and he would be my selection.

My theory is draft midfielders especially with high picks as you know what you are getting. Free agent or trade or rookie for ruckman or key position players as they are more risky and allow other teams to develop them.

Huge chance the Gold Coast take Weller. He has been working with their accademy for years, they would know him and have developed him. So it makes sense

true, but they may also be tempted to take a tall with their first pick. i wouldnt be surprised if we went after blakely with 10. i know he is meant to be near the end of the first round, but i just am so used to us taking players earlier than expected.

After combing over all available phantom drafts and highlights packages containing this years top rated mids I really like either Weller or Ahern with pick 10. Both would fit well IMO with their excellent foot skills and inside/outside ability and neither being short of pace. I would also be content with Laverde or Pickett but would prefer the above 2 before them. Laverde's highlight package looks sensational however he just reminds me somewhat of Smedts, whether that's justified or not, I'm no draft expert, once bitten twice shy I guess. Pickett's decision making is the only concern for me from his highlights reel, but gee he would add some toe and X factor to the side. I also wouldn't be overly surprised if we took a KPD that slid or possibly even Cockatoo with this pick, I'd much prefer the above 4 but Wells may think differently. It's going to be a month of intense speculation that's for sure.

Here's what I'm hoping we go with come draft day:

Pick 10: Paul Ahern – Small/Medium Midfielder (181cm, 77kg)
Player comparison: Steele Sidebottom

Paul Ahern is a damaging midfielder with the ability to play both inside and outside the contest. He seems to have a lot more time that others in pressure situations and his disposal oozes class. Ahern starred for Vic Metro this year, averaging 17 possessions (8 contested) at 73 per cent efficiency and nailing seven goals in five games. At TAC Cup level he kicked a goal in 12 of his 15 games proving he is a pure goal kicking mid.

Pick 47 Harrison Wigg – Small Defender (179cm, 74kg)
Player comparison: Matthew Broadbent (but smaller)

One of the best kicks of the draft, if not the best. Wigg earned All-Australian honours at the champs this year, along with MVP for SA after averaging 19 disposals at 79% efficiency from a half back flank. Playing in the midfield at colts level for North Adelaide in the SANFL, Wigg averages 28 disposals at 77 per cent disposal efficiency, 7.2 marks, 2.5 tackles, five clearances, 6.2 inside 50s and 1.7 rebound 50s per game. There’s one reason he will slide to pick 47 and that is purely because of his height, or lack thereof. Would be a steal at pick 47.

Pick 55 Aidan Anderson – Medium Forward (183cm, 82kg)
Player comparison: Jamie Elliott

Anderson is known as a goal-kicking machine. As a junior for University Cougars in the Darling Downs league (QLD)he tallied 115 and 117 goals in seasons 2007 and 2008. His biggest strength is his smarts, he knows exactly where to position himself, where to lead, where to run, when to kick. He’s extremely agile with his evasive skills being excellent along with his ability to change direction, he has a serious bag of tricks. Kevin Sheehan described Anderson as Western Australia’s "Shining Light" at the Under 18 AFL National Championships.

I think Blakely will be safe choice even with pick 10.

He'd defenitely be in the mix , Combine results will surely have him rising.
Would be happy with him , Weller or Laverde - defenitely need a quality mid who will debut in 2015 to complement Lang , Jansen and Hartman

In terms of Rookies would defenitely look at Brad Walsh - WA Skipper from the Carnival - midfielder
Bewhildering that he wasn't asked to the combine , was in WA's best 5 in virtually every game - I'd rate him ahead of Waterman
Great size , strong as an ox with good endurance , acceptable pace , good skills and decision making - great character as well.

I wonder if we are any chance of picking up Isaac Conway with our last pick........
I was interested in him last year but he was a Brisbane academy member. They took him with their first pick in the rookie draft and have delisted him.

DOB29/5/95

Height184cm

Weight83kg

PositionMidfielder

Recruited from
Aspley (QLD)

SummaryAn inside midfielder who is clean below his knees and has good hands in traffic. Conway played for both Aspley and the Lions reserves in the NEAFL and looked right at home against senior bodies. A strong character with leadership qualities, he is a good decision maker and was rewarded as captain of Queensland at the national U18 championships. A composed student of the game who shows football smarts and a strong work ethic.

2013 stats• Played 5 games and kicked 1 goal for Queensland (U18 Championships)
– averaged 13 kicks, 7 handballs, and 3 marks

• Played 8 games and kicked 2 goals for Aspley / Lions Reserves (NEAFL)
– averaged 10 kicks, 8 handballs, and 5 marks

Player comparisonDaniel Cross (WB/MEL), Matt Crouch (ADEL)

Huge chance the Gold Coast take Weller. He has been working with their accademy for years, they would know him and have developed him. So it makes sense

Their coach was not a fan of his brother Mav. Although he is gone now I suppose so they might take Weller
