Geelong - back to back?

I've never seen anyone talk up how good the Port Adelaide 2007 and Sydney 2022 sides were.
We were dominant and destroyed those sides like we should have even though they were nothing to write home about.

Still think Port in 2007 were much better than people give them credit for.

They were in red hot form late in the year. Beat Hawthorn in Tassie then Geelong in Geelong (our sole loss in the last four months of the year). Hindsight says they were rubbish but they weren't going into the game.

If Geelong and Sydney both do not make the 8, that will be the first time in the AFL era that both grand finalists from the previous year do not make finals.

Exactly. Luck plays a part. Richmond were lucky not to have to face a team as good and in as hot form as Melbourne '21 or Geelong '22. But both of those sides were also lucky to peak and have their best list after the Richmond dynasty side was done.

And it's generally commonsense that there's pretty much only been room for 1, maybe 2, great teams at a time since the expansion teams diluted the talent and that took effect over a decade. And mostly their level in absolute terms is a bit lower than previous eras - it's been an even comp for at least 8 years now. Hence teams making GF from outside the top 4, more straight sets and so on.

Back-to-back is very hard to do. The moment you win the flag, you become the measuring stick for other clubs to rise to. You become the hunted. And there's that hunger element, are the players as hungry for success as they were last year?
It's amazing how many teams crashed badly the year after losing a GF.
Some Since 2000:
Melbourne 11th in 2001
2003 Collingwood - 13th in 2004
2004 Brisbane Lions - 11th in 2005
2007 Port Adelaide - 13th in 2008
2017 Adelaide - 12th in 2018
2019 GWS - 10th in 2020

Hawthorn 2009 and Bulldogs 2017 crashed pretty badly after winning flags too.

What's the deal with the Swans? They were supposed to have all this super young talent, you'd have banked on them making the eight after reaching the GF last year, but they're bottom four at present. Seriously, leaving it up to grandpa's army to try avoid that record is poor form.
Over achieved last season big time to make the GF.

Some serious underlying list issues. Poor depth. Reserves side is totally non competitive.
BigFooty seriously over estimates our so called "Academy".

No key defender.
No key fwd ready to play week in week out.
No clearance Midfielder.

You are severely devoid of confidence.
It saps the entire team.

A big win against West Coast could be the spark needed to kick off the season.
Big game next week v Geelong.
Swans have effectively been tormented by them recently. They would love to get a win in the re-match on home ground.

AFL, Richmond did in 17-20

Pretty sure it applies in soccer as well. With champions and premiers. So it also means Geelong 07-11 did better than the 3peat to.

Premiers, Minor Premiers, Premiers, N/A, Premiers
“Minor premiers” = didn’t even make the GF.

No it's not and you instantly move onto a separate question regarding Hawthorn?
I smell a big fat troll in disguise
No it's 16 years.
