OK. I see your point this time.

It's hard to see another solution.

Remembering that a player must be within 9m AND be under direct pressure to effect the point and get the kick in (maintain possession). Since 2009 anyway.

It's just part of the game.

In 2008 as a couple of others have alluded to, we lost the Grand Final (we also played poorly) because the opposition could do the "point sacrifice" and did so often when not under pressure.

Then, the pressure clause came in.

Anyway

Go Cats

As a new yawka I have no clue what a sliding door is other than it leads to the patio. I’ve searched unsuccessfully for a rules thread, so here it goes.

Is there any way to change the rule that gives the defense possession after purposefully directing in a behind? Footy has 17,150 yards of boundary -(almost said sideline as there are no lines, but keeping yards), and the ten feet(!) it’s not a throw in is where the d is most vulnerable with a cheap out?

Ok, a yanks view of HTB comes next week ;)

The kick-in rule has been part of the game since 1859. It is similar in soccer, rugby union and rugby league.

A major reason for it is to prevent the ball being locked into the forward pocket by repeated ball ups and throw ins caused by a mass of players from both sides which is unattractive for spectators.

This is probably a popular sliding door moment around these parts - what if we drafted Brodie Grundy instead of Jackson Thurlow?

Oh God don't bring that one up again

Grundy was touted as a top 3 pick and slid a long way. Given he had two great seasons and then phoned it in after getting the massive long term deal all the recruiters that overlooked him are vindicated to an extent. Obviously still would have turned out better than Thurlow but the recruiters were not wrong to have the concerns.

I’m still mad at the club for picking Thurlow over Grundy it Probbly cost us a Flag or two in all honesty

I remember backing in Wells when he selected Thurlow over Grundy. Honestly felt Thurlow would have a tremendous career but looking back, Grundy would have been sensational.

There was one final where Scott dropped a ruckman and we faced Collingwood. Grundy absolutely slaughtered us and was the difference in the game 🙁
Aaaaand this exceptional bait is exactly why I said “no Thurlow over Grundy” in the OP lol

A Sliding Door is a term for a moment in life where a seemingly inconsequential event turns out to have massive consequences. It’s a global term though, there was a 90s romcom of the same name.

Maybe the saints do win 09 if we win 08 (that was one of the most classic GFs I've seen).

But for me 2008 was still so unforgivable with the way we gave it away with goalkicking it was unforgivably crap.
For me it's the same as how bad 2019 (the prelim performance was bad but stuffing the QF vs coll with no ruck was even worse) was and how awful the 2024 prelim was. I can live with 2020 as it was a covid year and that was one of the great Dustin Martin games with a good team (although we still had enough momentum to win it) and in 2021 I don't think we were that good. But in 08 19 and 24 we were clearly the best team in it. And in the latter 2 years it was even worse as we basically had floggable GF opponents if we got there.
We were not clearly the best side in 2024. I’d argue there was no clear best

6 hundred plus gamers taken after the pick we gave North. 8× 50+. Some solid contributors in Mason Wood, Lachie Hunter, Tim Membrey etc.

I mean, it's no Shaun Mannagh + Lawson Humphries, but Membrey would have been nice

Funny thing is I looked at the same list and felt meh

The best is the team that peaked for and smashed the GF. Swans were described as clear best until their inexplicable loss against Port, and probably never fully recovered. Admittedly, no team was unbeatable or a standout and remaining healthy was priceless this year. But i have no problem calling Brisbane the best in the comp because they are, or were.

Speaking of Hinkley, would he have won the Brownlow in 1992 if he wasn't KO'd by Peter Worsfold when we played Brisbane in Geelong in the first meeting after we kicked the record store against them?

He was everywhere in the first half, before he was concussed just before half time and took no further part in the game. He ended up coming 3rd in the Brownlow that year - 3 votes behind eventual winner Scott Wynd.
Everyone should know about this. Anyone who knows footy knows about Barry Hall on Staker but this is lesser known and far worse as it’s “allegedly” a directive from the coach.

I should point out Robert Walls alleges the message was misinterpreted. I’m not sure how it could have been misinterpreted when he admitted that he told all his players to show a bit of fight before the game started.

You can find the incident at 1hr 1min in.

If Kenny was able to play out the second half and was fortunate enough to win the Brownlow he would most certainly be held higher amongst all the all time Cats greats.

Arrogance? I wouldnt confuse the yips with arrogance.

We struggled the week before against footscray. The signs were there that we werent fresh and ready to go.

2013 first final selection is where I would say we were arrogant. And it cost us the flag.

Brad Ottens ignoring two teammates running into an open goal to have a shot from an angle I wouldn't call arrogance, but the side went away from everything they had done that year on the most important day of all. Unforgivable.

I'm sure if they realised Sydney were going to be that bad a walkover they would have just tried to push Holmes through and win even if he missed a 2nd GF. But it's hard when you have to make the call under time pressure on the bench.

If we won he would have played in the GF.

His 1992 season was phenomenal. As was 93 and 94.

Stewart and enright are the best two half back flankers we have had (and possibly the two best the game has seen in the past 35 years). But at geelong hinkley for mine is clear next in line and then a gap with milburn, mansfield, bos, mackie, sholl next in line.

It was like he panicked, and he definitely wasn't the only one. So many of our players suddenly become very rattled. You could see it. You could feel it.
