He's obviously raw.

But between his testing and the glimpses he showed in those highlights I'm stunned he wasn't even a certainty to be rookie listed.
Fair point. Sort of make you wonder about the guys who just miss on a chance.

Pretty sure most would have looked hard when he ran that 20M time. Wells talked about his other skills ..be nice to see some of that but he is probably in need of a lot of development. EDIT …looking at the vid above does give one a hint of what he might be ..

The other clubs must think its a 3 to 4 years timeline … something we are happy with as we have no immediate need thanks to the 4 years we have put into Neale.

Suspect Cats want KP players with late picks.
Not looking specifically a designated ruck
Rather tall fast versatile players to adapt
Possible reason they overlooked Dodson
Instead look at their attributes and skills.
Determine where they can fit into the team
Future footballers will be more versatile
Single position players can be countered
Jezza roams wide makes him hard to stop

I think Conway and Pike show they will pick the mono role player if its the right player… but as Blitz and Stanley has shown ..the MC like our talls to have wheels.

Wells doesn't give much away but I got the sneaking suspicion from his interview that Wells is extra excited about this pick.
This young fella screams could be anything or completely disappear to me. I like it.

The very late growth spurt not always successful, ala Mitch Brown (although he was on AFL lists for many years).

Mitch Brown got banged up early on. Shoulder, among other things.

Looked the goods till then. Bad shoulder injuries take away overhead skills and confidence to attack the contest.

He actually became a handy footballer. Particularly for Essendon.
Just never bulked up in size and was often outpointed by opponents throughout his career.

Probably naturally had a slender physique no matter how hard he trained. Bit like Mackie who never looked like he spent more than a few weeks in a gym each preseason.

Both you & Sydney were the 2 clubs who showed plenty of interest.

This above comment Footy Smarts: is so much on the mark. In fact this would be the first time I can recall that Wellsy has 'singled out' a draftee among others, it was quite noticeable and he wanted it to be known that he thought one day Jacob Molier is going to be a very good footballer and surprise a lot of people. So, I for one am going to follow Jacob Molier with a great deal of interest given Wellsy's excellent opinion of him.

Interesting, coz it's been mainly the Sydney and Geelong that have got so many 'hidden gems' over the years from the draft night.

Rumour is we were keen on Jordan Dawson (also a Sturt boy) with our pick 59 back in 2015 before Sydney took him at 56. We ended up taking Ryan Gardner.

Spoke to a legend of the Sturt footy club who tells me that Jacob was the one who is very focussed on working hard to improve, has a high work ethic and has come on in leaps and bounds from nowhere. He said we picked the right one, and that there were no red flags, only upside. So, on balance worth a punt for a key position or ruck to develop.

I'm sure none of us would have picked Lawson Humphries last year so wouldn't worry too much. If 1/4 new recruits succeeds that's a win.

OTG: I was absolutely stoked that we drafted Lawson Humphries in 2023 and I wrote a piece later-on (see below) on Geelong Big Footy explaining why, after Kingy made some glowing remarks about him.

I do realise that the attached below video at '37 seconds' is only one piece of play but I've gotta say that would be as good of a single highlight I've seen from a young non-AFL player, it's absolutely a brilliant, stunning and 'exciting' piece of football orchestrated by Lawson Humphries, FUTURE ELITE..... let's bloody well hope so! GO CATS

My understanding is the ruck St Kilda drafted had some off field red flags

This is the s*** i live for. Invest in character

Reminds me of what we've seen with Neale over the last few years.

Even if they don't make it, you can rest easy knowing they gave it all they had.

Id say most of accept that sometimes guys just fall short. Absolutely no shame in that. What can frustraite is not giving their golden ticket their all. Even more so when you hear the retired player crying in their pretzels about what they should have done. Its probably why I like guys like Dempsey and Atkins.

If Moll can take a similar path to Neale he will have done well. I get the feeling Neale still feels he has plenty of development to go.. which is good.

At this level attribute based drafting is the way to go, think of development in terms of hours. A prospective pick goes through in the U17 and U18 years and compare that in quantity and quality to their first two years on an AFL list.
