Geelong - Too old, too slow?

Congratulations Geelong. Best side all year. Deserved this flag.

Chris Scott take a bow. Coached brilliantly all season. Atkins into the midfield, Blicavs in a range of roles, turning Stengle into arguably the best small forward in the comp…his management all season with the senior players was superb.

Those like myself thinking “the cliff” was coming this year have egg on our faces and rightly so. The cats are going nowhere fast.

Joel Selwood will retire and will be impossible to replace. However, in comes max Holmes who is already a star at such a young age. They will also bring tanner bruhn and potentially ollie Henry. Their list will be better next season than it was this season.

Top 4 next season is a lock. They will be challenging again and probably in 2024 as well.

We could be good next season, but I think we fall off a fair bit in 2024/2025. Will most likely be losing Danger/Selwood/Blitz/Hawk/Toughy/Stanley/Smith/Duncan/Rohan by then, which is 9 of our best 22 today.

That said we have this Dempsey kid who I reckons a rare talent.

Scariest thing is we have lost Wells (our head of recruiting who picked up Kelly/Gola/Stewart/Stengle from obscurity).

I know they won today, but that was extremely mediocre. Even before Higgins got injured, they moved the ball at a snail's pace and look miles off the better teams in the competition right now. The new rules do nothing to help them either, their senior citizens are struggling to keep up the pace. Their coach is also very negative-minded, and doesn't seem too keen on changing his ways.

A lot of people consider the loss against Adelaide as an anomaly, but Adelaide are a fast team. Even with their inexperience, I'm not surprised Geelong struggled that game.

They have Jeremy Cameron and a 31 year old Dangerfield to come back, but I'm not convinced that is anywhere near enough to be contenders this year.

I agree. It's a wonder any of them can get out of bed in the morning, let alone get on an AFL field. Adelaide for premiers.

Very concerning

We've still got Hawkins, Cameron, danger, Stewart who will be top 40 in the comp, another year into henry and bruhn, add clark, we certainly need midfielders and I'd expect to get a 21-26 year via a trade or free agency at the end, get a full preseason into Guthrie

Retire
Smith
Tuohy
Ceglar
Trade
Ratagolou

Well that sounds good but if you fall along way it takes longer to get back up that seems quite simple….maybe go try it.
Don't want to be all arrogant about it, we may be down for ages, but history shows we're never down for long. At this point I just hope we're on the right track.

Cats have 4 flags since 2007. If I were a Cats fan I'd be pretty happy with that even if they didn't win another for 20 years.

Yes I am happy because I grew up watching you guys deprive us of it for 20 years haha. If we are down for a bit so be it but I believe we are still a mid row side next year and won’t bottom out, but we do need to address some future concerns.

We need a smith type though! We have no power running link players.

Too old, too slow.

They are finally finished.
Absolutely. It took 12 years for people to be right.

After being there live last year I no longer care.

The cliff has come. Happened to us, happened to Richmond, Geelong's turn now
And somehow we end the year with perhaps the 4th-best percentage, 6 games lost under 2 goals, a league-leading 16 first quarters won.

The number one in the league for earliest substitutions caused by injury on average.

A season without playing North, Hawthorn, WC twice.

For much of the year, it seemed like a huge dark practical dose of karma for everything going right last year. Getting only 3 free kicks in the game tonight (excluding the one that was reversed) just topped it all off.
