That's a disadvantage to finishing top 4. Leading into the GF, a team could find themselves potentially having only played 2 games in 5-6 weeks. Not ideal prep for a GF
That sounds like a brilliant AFL idea!

Bye before Grand Final is all that should be required. I really do miss the momentum leading into finals.

Why don’t we have 17 rounds each playing each other once and 4 finals, then fill out the rest of the year with byes where the only allowable media is trade radio.

34 rounds, like the hunger games, only the true survivors make it.

The only fair way is to have the double ups change every year. After 3 years a team would have had double ups against every other team.

This bye week is such rubbish. I put it in the same category as twilight games and how much they get the sub/extended interchange thing wrong.

Has good intention, terrible execution and ruins momentum and the excitement/build up which is the best thing about footy.

If they were worried about teams tanking to get a finals advantage, why not have a lottery for the top 8 positions?

I also think top 2 should get more advantage. If they do put in the wildcard week, let them play the wildcard winners and straight into prelim. It’s ridiculous the wildcard gives 5th and 6th an easier ride than before

Week 1. 7v10 8v9

Week 2 1 v lowest winner week 1, 2 v highest winner week 1
3 v 6, 4 v 5 . Two lowest losers eliminated. Highest winners straight to prelim

Week 3. 2x lowest winners v 2 highest losers. Highest finishers home team

Week 4 2x highest winners week 2 v 2 winners week 3. Prelims

Week 5 grans final two winners week 6

The pre finals bye decision was always flawed

The pre-finals bye is annoying but the idea of a 'wildcard' weekend just infuriates me. If you finish 10th in an 18 team competition you don't deserve the faintest chance of winning a premiership. Hopefully the AFL never tries this abomination.

They are ‘trying’ it in the vfl. Ended up with two one sided finals and another two the week after

vFL is 21 teams though

You are over complicating a great idea.

Just run week 1 like you have and then run a regular 4 week finals series after that.

Instead of having no footy this weekend gone, we would have 2 cut throat elimination finals. This year we would hev enjoyed GWS v Adelaide and Sydney v Dogs. It leaves more teams in with a shot for longer, giving us loads more meaningful games late in the season. It also mitigates unfair draws. On top of that, its more finals footy in a dead weekend which nobody likes

I wish they would stop calling it a wild card weekend though, loads of people bristle immediately at the American reference but when they actually look at the idea, it makes heaps of sense.

Imagine having a game mechanic that renders the entire rest of the sport pointless.

I wouldn't put it past the AFL to introduce a multi-coloured ball for 3 minutes every game and the first team to score with it gets 150 points. It's just the kind of cool, inventive, innovative and fun thing that fans love to see destroy the game they have been happily watching without all the cool, inventive, innovative fun changes.

Came across this uploaded to the you tube last night. Haven't seen this match before (1973 GF), so thought I'd share for others in same boat

Question for the panel - which of the participants would be the most famous to the kids of today?

Rex?
Sheeds?
Robert Walls?
Big Nick?
KB?
None of the above?

No, people bristle at it because it is a stupid idea and that teams finishing 9th and 10th don't deserve to be rewarded for being mediocre for an entire season. More than 50% of the competition shouldn't get to be in the finals.

In my experience I've met a few friends who bristled at first and then warmed to the idea after sitting down and chatting about it. Just my anecdotal experience though.

I disagree about 9th and 10th being mediocre, or at least being that much more mediocre than 7th and 8th. The difference between Adelaide/Dogs and Sydney/GWS this year is pretty negligible, shit Adelaide should be there.

I personally dont have an issue with it. I like having more meaningful H&A games, I love having more finals and I hate having a week off.
