Having Ratt's challenge Sam's game plan will only hone it, plus i imagine the demands on Sam's time would be massive. Picking up a bit of slack from him and playing the Chris Fagan role, one he would intimate knowledge of from the three peat, is a big plus. So glad he is back in the fold. Interested to see who picks up the forward line coach job!?

I recall that was ratten role in the threepeat. The devils advocate. Came to light when Clarko had 5 games off and ratten wasn’t the stand in. Would have upset the arrangements

Not sure if it's been mentioned but I'm not liking the push to throw the ball up at centre bounces.

Why couldn't we have a specialist ball up person that comes on and off at the start of each quarter and after a goal is scored ?

Maintains tradition of ball ups, let's the umps focus and improve on important areas of their responsibility and creates jobs. Win win win

Could even run competitions to win the right to a game day ball up.

:)

I love the ball up, but we now have a giant in the ruck, and when it is thrown up I'm yet to see him lose a tap. When it is bounced, teams are running straight at him and blocking (rarely called or I wouldn't have an issue)

The art of the block is creeping in, I'd rather lose the bounce before it becomes an issue

Why go to all that effort just to keep something in the game that is rarely totally fair and even?

Keeping something that is objectively worse just for tradition seems silly to me, ball up should be used 100% of the time.

Yeah ok. Didn’t see that. Wonder why it’s only just becoming an issue

More stoppages perhaps - or more practicing than umpires in the past.

Probably yet another reason the AFL shouldn’t be stingy pricks and should make the umpires fully professional. Give them all week to practice but with full recovery on offer with physios etc. Also allow them to review poor calls, work on the rules etc etc.

Totally agree with umpires being fully professional. Should’ve happened years ago.

What's the argument for them not being fully professional. Seems a no-brainer to me. Is it just the $?
Well, it's a strange one. They are so sh!t at the job they shouldn't be paid, however if you paid them more they'd be better at their job supposedly. But they probably wouldn't. It is so stupid though that they haven't brought in full time umpires. When guys like Glenn James (the best of the lot IMHO) umpired, he was on his own, covered the entire field, trained insanely hard to be able to do it and it was his weekend job. Insane.

Depends if full time means they must relinquish other activities….apparently the players are encouraged to do that.

Not really seeing how they spend the rest of their time affects each split second decision, which is most people’s problem with them

Anyone who thinks the bounce is better than a throw up is kidding themselves.
I used to do a bit of ruck work back in the dim dark ages, and I much preferred the bounce. Not sure why, it just seemed to suit me more. However, there was margin for error back then, not so many goals resulting from centre clearances. As a spectator, I'd do away with the bounce completely. I think the way the game is played now we deserve a 50/50 contest at every centre contest.

Umpires just used to pay free kicks back in the day for things like holding the ball.

Probably do it already but I’d invest in some form of mental support. It must weigh heavily on the day to day stuff. Everyone’s favourite goldspink in retirement said he used to enjoy triggering the crowd. That is not professional.
