Why? If you look at the marquee players from previous years a lot of them have been qlders.

We have a strong women's league and a developing jnr program.

Also because the boys leagues aren't at the same level as the southern states the girls can play against the boys a little longer and be competitive. There is some outstanding talent coming through next year out of qld as well.
Did I expect the Brisbane team to be sitting equal first on the ladder half way through the season and have a shot at hosting the GF? No.

Ask yourself the same question and genuinely tell me if you could have predicted this before the start of the season. If you truly believe you could have, then your knowledge of the local women's game is probably a lot stronger than most. Certainly stronger than mine before the season.

If the Brisbane girls do go all the way then I'd expect Gold Coast to push pretty hard for their own women's team and that will hurt the Lions if it eventuates.

I don't think anyone knew how the season would pan out, but I think the women were rated lowly because the men's team was a shambles. So why should anybody be surprised when most of the leagues players were an unknown quantity.

Any team with a dominant power forward can be a handful.

Gold Coast won't get a team in the forseeable future. There academy isn't as strong as the lions, despite gold coast being a strong region in girls footy through the age groups.

I don't agree with that. I don't think the recent failures of the men's team affected the perceived prospects of the women's team. I think the presumption was that the standard of the local QLD league wasn't as high as their southern counterparts and therefore a team filled with Queenslanders was probably unlikely to succeed in a national league. Obviously we now know that's not the case but I think that was the perception at the beginning of the season.

I know a couple of people involved in the women's game up here who thought we were half a shot at the grand final. They thought we had talent in the right areas and a system of play that would be sustainable. They also thought the comp was both even and unpredictable and couldn't see any side as a particular stand out.

Again coming back to my previous post I don't know why people would think the league was weak when in previous years a lot of the marquee players were qlders.

We also have a number of all Australians at jnr level.

Great article by Martin Flanagan in today's Age on women's footy in QLD.

Both commentators literally just said "I hope Brisbane lose" then start rambling on about how it would come down to percentage in the end... giving the Victorian Carlton or the Victorian Melbourne a chance to qualify for the GF.

Dogs looked good for abouta quarter, but they have no depth. Bad news is this is turning into a % booster for Carlton. Good news is if the dogs play like this next week we should beat them comfortably.

back to a 6 point margin, high scoring game and if the dogs hurry they might have a chance at a sneaky comeback

Carlton won. But 54-48 means they lose almost 10%.

But couple of bad losses to us and a couple of big wins to Carlton and who knows still.

So the winner tonight basically guarantees themselves a finals birth...

C'MON GIRLS LET'S GO ALL OUT AND GO UNDEFEATED FOR THE YEAR

Underwood was it? She has also just refused all year to give brisbane any acknowledgement as a top side. Sh*ts me off.

The freo-pies game is much more enjoyable to watch. Partly because the skills are better (I thought the dogs were pretty bad today), but more significantly because the commentators are so much better.

How any team with Sauce Merrett as its backline coach can be as well organised in defence as the Lions is completely beyond me.

Why? Sauce was always a very good defensive player. It's with ball in hand that you sometimes had your heart in your mouth. He was always a very good one on one defender and an exceptional 1% player.

He was a very good one-on-one defender, and he had all the physical attributes, but I thought his positioning (as well as decision making with ball in hand) was often poor, especially in the second half of his career.

And that's what the girls seem so good at now. Even when Virgo (last week) and Lutkins (surprisingly, this week) have been redeployed up the ground, we haven't missed a beat - their positioning as a group has been exceptional.

Have spoken to a few women's coaches over the years (albeit not at professional levels) and they all say how much easier it is to coach girls than boys, simply because they listen and do exactly what they're instructed. There are no egos, or chest thumping - just a real obedience to the task and respect for the coach.
