Maybe because ignorant misguided do-gooders with no understanding of threat assessment insist on restricting LEA powers at every turn? How did this bloke go undetected by law enforcement before his planned attack in Newcastle yesterday?

I feel very sorry for the police officer who was burned and hope he's feeling a lot better. Should be 3 years without parole.
They need to stamp that crap right out.
There are young girls in the UK who end up deformed for life because of some dickhead throwing acid.
They get off light because they didn't kill anyone.

Very specific details, such as the pillow. I can't imagine a child making that up.
Illawarra teacher and former NRL player Keith Eshman denies sexually assaulting young child
The court heard the child made multiple disclosures about sexual acts Mr Eshman had allegedly engaged with her. Mr Eshman took the stand on Thursday. Defence barrister Brendan Green questioned Mr Eshman about the allegations.
"In the course of this trial, you have heard the child accuse you of touching her private parts, what do you say to that?" Mr Green asked.
"That never happened," Mr Eshman responded.
Mr Eshman gave the same response when asked about two other similar sex offences he was alleged to have committed. Mr Green asked his client about evidence previously heard in the trial that Mr Eshman told the child they had a "secret".
"Did you ever say something about she needed to keep a secret?" Mr Green asked.
"Never, no," Mr Eshman responded.
"Did you say something like that to her at any time?" Mr Green asked.
"Never, no, Mr Eshman responded.
Mr Eshman was cross-examined by Crown Prosecutor Nerissa Keay. The jury was shown a video of the room where the child was allegedly abused which had a pillow on the floor.
"You took [the pillow] in there for [name] to lie on?" Ms Keay asked.
"No," Mr Eshman responded.
"Then you sexually touched her," Ms Keay said.
"No I didn't," Mr Eshman said.

Watched the Netflix Doco. What a bizarre situation all round! For some reason the Doco (to me) came across very 'American', doesn't help that the guys name was Moriarty, (Shades of Sherlock Holmes too) I had to keep reminding myself that this was in Australia. A small group (11?) of mainly older people living in an isolated NT 'ghost town', each person with their own quirky personality and questionable reason for living there. One goes missing (with his dog ) and they are all under suspicion for different reasons!! Great watch.Yet another missing person, this one with his dog

This could lead to other unsolved crimes in Perth and possibly elsewhere being solved when/if his ID is made public, including pics of what he looked like in the intervening years.
Investigative Genetic Genealogy technology finally nailed him 31 years after the attack.

DNA has led detectives to arrest and charge a 53-year-old Canberra man with the alleged rape of a 19-year-old woman at a college in Nedlands in 1993.
Police will allege the attack happened about 3am on February 23, 1993, when the 53-year-old man forced entry to the Stirling Highway college.
āThe victim ... was asleep in her student accommodation when she was awoken to the man in her room. It will be further alleged the man threatened the victim and sexually assaulted her,ā police said in a statement.
āA forensic examination was conducted at the time of the assault which resulted in an unidentified male DNA profile being located. This DNA profile remained unidentified for thirty years.ā
Using ground-breaking Investigative Genetic Genealogy technology a suspect was identified and on Wednesday ā with the help of the Australian Federal Police ā the man was arrested in Canberra and subsequently extradited to Perth.
He has since been charged by special crime squad detectives with two counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent and one count of burglary and commit.
He is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday.'
