Yet another missing person, this one with his dog

Watched the Netflix Doco. What a bizarre situation all round! For some reason the Doco (to me) came across very 'American', doesn't help that the guys name was Moriarty, (Shades of Sherlock Holmes too) I had to keep reminding myself that this was in Australia. A small group (11?) of mainly older people living in an isolated NT 'ghost town', each person with their own quirky personality and questionable reason for living there. One goes missing (with his dog ) and they are all under suspicion for different reasons!! Great watch.

Hopefully the ID of this accused 1993 Nedlands rapist will be revealed today in court and the media sometime today.
This could lead to other unsolved crimes in Perth and possibly elsewhere being solved when/if his ID is made public, including pics of what he looked like in the intervening years.

Investigative Genetic Genealogy technology finally nailed him 31 years after the attack.

'Nedlands 1993 rape: Police charge Canberra man over alleged rape of 19-year-old woman'

...
DNA has led detectives to arrest and charge a 53-year-old Canberra man with the alleged rape of a 19-year-old woman at a college in Nedlands in 1993.

Police will allege the attack happened about 3am on February 23, 1993, when the 53-year-old man forced entry to the Stirling Highway college.

“The victim ... was asleep in her student accommodation when she was awoken to the man in her room. It will be further alleged the man threatened the victim and sexually assaulted her,” police said in a statement.

“A forensic examination was conducted at the time of the assault which resulted in an unidentified male DNA profile being located. This DNA profile remained unidentified for thirty years.”

Using ground-breaking Investigative Genetic Genealogy technology a suspect was identified and on Wednesday — with the help of the Australian Federal Police — the man was arrested in Canberra and subsequently extradited to Perth.

He has since been charged by special crime squad detectives with two counts of aggravated sexual penetration without consent and one count of burglary and commit.

He is due to appear before the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday.'

Was this one we thought Edwards might be responsible for?

Not as far as I'm aware.

But there's alot of old threads on various forums and any archives of them or media archives that might still exist, to see if this rape even made the media back in 1993, let alone in the 31 years thereafter.

Craig Anthony Dwyer

'...
Craig Anthony Dwyer, 53, appeared briefly in the Perth Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon and spoke only to say he understood the charges against him.

He made no application for bail and the duty lawyer requested that the case be adjourned for six weeks so Mr Dwyer could get legal advice and make an application for legal aid.

He was remanded in custody and is due back in court in mid-August.
...
a forensic examination was conducted at the time of the assault but that despite the best efforts of police, the case went unsolved.

Police said the investigation moved forward through advances in technology, and using the expertise of the PathWest Forensic Biology Department.'

NT police commissioner declares curfew in Alice Springs after multiple violent incidents

The Northern Territory police commissioner has declared another curfew in Alice Springs for the next three nights, following a string of violent incidents in the outback town.

The curfew will run from 10pm to 6am each night and applies to both children and adults.

Commissioner Michael Murphy had been considering implementing a curfew since Sunday, after what NT Police Minister Brent Potter described as a "horror 72 hours" in the Red Centre.

This included the alleged assault of four off-duty police officers – three women and a man – in the early hours of Sunday morning by a group of about 20 young people.

A police officer was also run over outside a bottle shop on Friday afternoon, with an alleged stabbing also occurring in the Alice Springs CBD.

Commissioner Murphy said the curfew would be enforced "in the confines between Anzac Hill, Schwarz Crescent, down to the hospital, from the Stuart Highway across to Leichhardt and Stott Terrace".

Allegedly a serial rat poisoner.
Husband died and she told Police some **** and bull story.

'She reportedly told detectives that she had mixed rat poison with juice in an attempt to take her own life due to being depressed by the death of her husband but that Mr Shorey drank the concoction by mistake.

After discovering she had booked a one-way ticket to the UK, police barred the woman from leaving the country and seized her phone.

They reportedly discovered messages which indicated she was unhappy with Mr Shorey socialising with other women and his plans to return to Australia.'

Some folks are just too stupid and don't deserve to have children. The trial of the family of Elizabeth Struhs has begun. They were the happy hand clappers that decided god would fix their daughters diabetes, instead she died a miserable death from ketoacidosis. Superstitions can be dangerous.

Didn't realise things were this bad in the Victoria Education system back then!
Was it worse in VIC than other States/Territories when it comes to how this sort of thing could happen?

'The "culture that prioritised the reputation of the education system over the safety of children" was already especially well known thanks to criminal and civil trials that revealed the system by which the department's district school inspectors shuffled abusers all over the state.'

And we are shocked when terrorism occurs...

Alleged member of Sydney terror network granted bail as magistrate brands Crown case 'weak'

A magistrate granted bail to a 16-year-old on strict conditions including house arrest and 24-hour parental supervision.

The magistrate said the prosecution case was "relatively weak" and the teenager's alleged terror plan seemed to be "all talk".

The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions is appealing the decision, forcing a 72-hour stay on the teenager's release.

I posted about this one earlier. here is unrepentant stupidity.
Claiming religious persecution.

The leader of a religious group accused of killing an eight-year-old girl by withholding her medication has claimed the trial was “religious persecution” and they acted reasonably under their faith.
...“This isn’t really a trial about murder of a child as it is religious persecution,” Stevens said.

Suddenly I’m all for religious persecution 🙄

Can see some issues if there is an explosion in German Shepherds for pets, particularly with so many single women living alone, not living in homes with a garden.

No mention of an overt outdoor home security system covering all sides of the house.

'1. Trust your gut'
'2. Get a German Shepherd'

'3. Put a 'Beware of Dog' sign outside your house'
'4. Put workman's boots outside your door'

'Dr Ann Burgess, who spent decades studying the minds of serial killers, has found these individuals always search for women who are unprotected, appear weak and are living alone.'

I inherited the family German Shepherd when my wife and i separated, she died last year and i still miss her to pieces.

If someone was home she was normally in the house she'd hear things out the front that we didn't . One night she was going silly at the door , i opened it, she ran behind the garden barking, heard rapid footsteps , then a car out the front that i couldn't see drove off.

She was nervous around strangers though and very unpredictable around other dogs.

I think having a large dog in the yard was a good deterrent.

Telling women they should take precautions to avoid being attacked doesn’t go down well in some quarters. 🙄

The first point is very important.

Surely it's time for a presumption against bail with terrorism matters.

As for "all talk", how would the Magistrate have sufficient knowledge to discern this. And surely it's time for the law to be beefed up so that anyone talking about/threatening terrorism can be charged of an offence in itself.
