Oh FFS childhood abuse is not an excuse to become a drug addict, there are plenty of people (most likely the majority) who were abused as children and don't turn to drugs.
How many people do you know who were abused as children? Do you have any understanding of how young minds are warped by such abuse?

I think a certain amount of benefit should be provided to the homeless - enough for the cheapest shelter, basic food etc etc.

However, I do think this money should be given to them in cash. This is where personal responsibility comes in. It's the responsibility of the government to provide society with the means to acquire nessecary services, to advise how the money should be spent - but it's not their duty to actually enforce where the money goes.

If the homeless blow their money inappropriately, that is their right to choose. We should still giving them the basic means to live/clean up their act though, even if it's wasted.

I don't mind you first paragraph, the rest of it is a car crash though ;)

I wouldn't mind paying some tax $ towards paragraph 1 ideas but not in cash. If they want charity they take it how we decide to give it to them and that IMO, should be in basic shelter (tent cities if needed with little letter boxes and numbers out the front so they can't use this "i don't have an addy excuse) and basic food but very limited cash. I'm not interested in them spending tax $ on smokes, booze, drugs, TAB etc

I don't trust them to spend it wisely, they ended up as homeless and on the street, they haven't earned that trust. Help them yes, finance their habits no.

What did he have that other homeless people don't?
Did you read that article? At all? Even if he had nothing at all, you can hardly show one example of a person who had is share of luck and say "They should all be able to do it".

It's not a logical argument. You're drawing a conclusion based on too small a sample, and a self-selected one at that.

Maybe you should ask this guy:

He seemed to manage it.....

Oh. My. God!! It's so simple! Why didn't I think of that?? All you need to do is be in the exact right spot, at the exact right time, get a huge dose of luck by being in the financial hub just as the markets are starting to boom, and in no time you too will be buying ferraris of Micheal Jordan!

Now I understand Gerry's comments!! He's worried that if he gives any of these homeless guys a break, they'll all get stockmarket jobs and become billionaires too!!!

Every homeless person i have ever spoken to always tell me the same story ..they had the chance to become retail multi-millionaires but chose to become street people .

I guess the lifestyle just appealed to them a little more than the high rise apartments, fast cars, loose women, and big yachts. ;)

Is it not proof that you can be homeless and still have a job?

From the Queensland Criminal Code Act 1899:

Definition of murder
(1) Except as hereinafter set forth, a person who unlawfully kills
another under any of the following circumstances

The philosophical gulf between justice and the law is very large. Obviously a government would not want to have the pure meaning of murder within its legislation because it could then have that legislation used against it.

By inserting the term 'unlawfully' into the legislation, the government then gets to decide what it can lawfully prosecute as 'murder'. What it can lawfully prosecute as 'murder' and what murder actually is by definition become different entities.

Don't take everything your government tells you at face value, Monkster.

Its funny how because people are holding down a job and live in a proper house and dont use drugs they get the impression that they are honourably and nobly serving the community but anyone who doesnt do those things is useless.

We are all citizens of the nation and if a person is living on the streets, even if some fat cats decide it is ''their fault they are in that position'', they deserve to be helped.

Is it not proof that you can be homeless and still have a job?

It's certainly proof you can find a one-off example to prove anything.

Don't you think it's somewhat ironic though that, in a thread discussing how a billionaire doesn't believe there's any value in helping the homeless, that you are spruiking the case of a guy who got, y'know, helped by a billionaire?

John Singleton donates $1m to homeless

AUSTRALIAN Advertising guru John Singleton has challenged high profile business people to help the homeless by donating $1 million to the Exodus foundation.

The foundation, founded by the Reverend Bill Crews in 1986 helps the poor, needy, and lonely......

I can still remember Singo shouting the bar at Rosehill....

Reasons no #148 through 150 not to buy from this s**tstain company. The fish rots from the head down.
