The assumption here is that "they would not be employed by anyone else" or "they would not have any franchise options without Harvey Norman".
Harvey Norman is not a vital cog in our economy.
Far from it in fact. Harvey Norman spent the 80s and 90s gobbling up smaller retailers. As soon as online retail starting putting a dent in his margins, Gerry piped up about 'Aussie jobs'. fu**en please.
If I go back to when Harvey Norman opened up in WA in the 90s, there was no JB Hifi, The Good Guys, Apple Store, Appliances Online, Kogan etc. I can't remember if Telstra stores were a thing, but mobile phones hadn't taken off yet anyway. Those stores all now coexist. The technology and home electronics industry taking off in the last 20 or 30 years has nothing to do with any of the retailers who all just import mass produced goods anyway.
Bit hard to deny the role of Harvey Norman in the Australian economy in the past, present & future, regardless of whether you like Gerry Harvey or not, whether you like Katie Page (aka Mrs Norman). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katie_Page
Plenty of the stores are franchises, i.e the modern day family business, as are the Domayne & Joyce Mayne outlets.
Gerry makes himself available to the media & speaks his mind, wont be brow beaten by any journo trying to push their own barrow. I remember one ABC type interviewing him over online marketing & GST, surprise , surprise Gerry knew his stuff, versus the shallow reporter trying to suggest online would be the demise of bricks & mortar. Yep, jobs got a mention for good reason, as did tax revenue, neither of which the journo gave 'a continental, he was up at the trough funded by Australians taxes.
There is his involvement in the horse breeding industry, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Millions
Mr & Mrs Harvey have done it their way & whilst I dont share many of Gerrys views, I support our right to hear it. Whether you listen is your choice.
his role in the australian economy?
here's the reality. Harvey Norman is not a furniture company, its a finance company. It grew on the back of its "48 months interest free" loans which had massive interest rates once month 49 triggered.
and before you say "buyer beware" there is a reason these campaigns stopped - the ACCC doesnt like predatory loan practices
Absolutely no need to quote my post, your post stands alone, and you know that, e.g 'Bit hard to deny the role of Harvey Norman in the Australian economy in the past, present & future, regardless of whether you like Gerry Harvey or not .....' is personalised by your good self as 'his role in the australian economy?'
Then off you go ...
you think he contributed to the australian economy, he didnt which is why i responded.
his products are nearly all imports.
they were overpriced once the cost of finance was actually factored in.
in terms of retail, he wasnt a great labour generator (as anyone needed a salesperson in a harvey norman knows)
is he evil? no. But is isnt the hero of economic growth you allude to. He was more in common with Cash Convertors than with Myer
Unworthy of comment.
With all the insecurity that comes with it.
Read up on Gezza's franchise contracts.
so explain what economy good Harvey Norman has generated for Australia?
How many people does it employ, how much gst does it drive, payroll tax, super paid ... get the idea, basic stuff.
Not that much. The stock is made offshore and that's where most of the labour is. Most of the jobs would be in logistics.
This is like saying Amazon is a great driver of Australian economic growth
Amazon, now you are really stretching.
It seems you dont like Gerry or is it Harvey Norman ? All I've done is stand up for his right to an opinion .... and suggested Harvey Norman have a role in our economy, go figure !!
You think of companies impact by profile.
I mentioned their role, if I was talking about their profile I would have said so - by all means express your opinion.
You are living in the 80s. Furniture retail is not a large economic impact generator.
And it's not about personality. Woolies are morally bankrupt, *cough Endeavour* but their economic impact is unquestionable.

Go for it...
What did they do?
