"North Melbourne will reportedly make a big play for Geelong forward Steven Motlop, who is yet to sign a new deal with the Cats.

Motlop will become a restricted free agent at season’s end, and the Cats are looking increasingly unlikely to offer him another contract, with reports already believing a deal for the 26-year-old simply will not eventuate from Geelong.

“I’m pretty sure North will now have a big crack at Motlop,” The Australian’s Greg Denham told SEN’s Hungry For Sport on Monday.

“They’ll make him a priority because they missed out on Dustin Martin. Motlop is a free agent, so he will come relatively cheap.”

Over the 2017 season, Motlop booted 19 goals from 20 games, and averaged 18.9 disposals, 2.8 marks, 3.3 inside 50s and 2.2 tackles.

With the Cats keen on reuniting with favourite son Gary Ablett, Motlop and fellow forward Daniel Menzel are set to be moved on, to allow for space for Ablett’s contract.

Menzel will become a restricted free agent, and like Motlop, is expected to not be given a contract for next season and beyond.

As for North, Denham also believes they could also make a play for Port Adelaide swingman Jackson Trengrove, who will become a restricted free agent at season’s end.

Trengrove is reportedly wanting to remain with the Power, but his future is now up in the air given he was dropped following their round 20 loss to Adelaide and has not returned."

Hope the bolded isn't true...

That website has zero credibility

For what it's worth, I think Smith will improve our team. He is more likely to be on the park in comparison to a McCarthy or Gregson.

However, don't expect perhaps more than 30 goals a year... Just expect some tackling pressure in the fwd line, some line breaking (he has pace), but he lacks a lot of depth on his kicks, needs to be within 40m range from goals.
I like D.Smith. I think he needs the space of the G to play he's best footy though rather than say Spotless or KP.
I saw a game against Melbourne where he absolutely dominated. I reckon he would have had about 25 possies just in the forward 50 alone. I've been kinda sold on him since then.
I also saw a game against the Crows earlier this year where just his class kept GWS in touch early. Showed some very good finishing skills.

Talking Footy suggesting Andrew Gaff is potentially tradable by WCE. Yes please, imagine him and Duncan on both Wings.

On Moto G (5) using BigFooty.com mobile app

My personal opinion we have no chance in getting Gaff, can't see what we could give up to accommodate the eagles.
Would we love him, yes!
Can we get him, sadly no

Giants have just re-signed mature rookie forward daniel lloyd for 2 years and daws simpson for 1 year (no idea how he is still on list after 10 years but anyway) signing those mature backups cheap is a pretty big indicator they reckon a best 22 player like kelly or smith is going.

Not necessarily he is a free agent next year so if he indicates he is unlikely to re-sign they might trade now. I would think he would want a melbourne based club over geelong though. We do need a specialist winger but he wouldn't be cheap. You are probably looking at our 2018 1st + a 2nd or a mid level player (read 15-25 on the list type) to get them to think about it.

I know exactly who the Eagles would ask for should Geelong come asking for Gaff. Probably best to leave it.

If you mean duncan he is contracted long term (2020) and with him and demi just having had a baby and her being close to her family i am as confident as you can be he will be here until his career ends. So no wouldn't worry about him.

Contracted players can still be traded. I'm just saying, Gaff is a quality player, and WCE would want quality back. We saw what happened when Geelong started poking around Richmond and Caddy's name was bandied about. Suddenly he went from, according to the skipper, being guaranteed to remain at Geelong, to being shipped off a couple of days later. I think with the right inducements, any player can be compelled to leave regardless of ties, especially when it's to return home.

People need to let go of fantastical ideas about getting quality players for cheap. It won't happen, especially if you observe Geelong's history at the trade table. If you wanted Gaff, you would have to be prepared to lose real quality, because that is what WCE would ask for, and once they got in Duncan's ear, who knows what could happen?

Hope the bolded isn't true...
The club has lost the plot if it is true.

That article is from over a year ago so really not relevant to today.
Completely disagree - a players injury history is extremely relevant to their value and future output. Especially one involving a knee 'flaring up' meaning said player couldn't take his dog for a walk after training. Our club more than anyone should be well aware on how often lighting strikes twice when it comes to injuries in our squad. Did you all gasp and say OMG aren't we unlucky what a once off event every time Menzel did his knee? Go tell Hawthorn that a players injury history was irrelevant - mention O'Meara's knees as well and see what they say.

Regarding Smith...
The 23-year-old missed nine games in 2016 after having his left knee operated on early in the season
Devon Smith will undergo knee surgery after going down at training on Friday morning.
Smith tore the meniscus in his right knee at the Giants' final training session before Saturday's clash with Richmond at Spotless Stadium, and could be missing from anywhere between six and 12 weeks.
So he managed only 16 games this year and 14 games in 2016 as a 24 year old both due to knee injuries and you aren't concerned this could cause issues in his ability to get on the park and output in the future should he come to us on a high salary + draft pick? Did you see him struggle to kick it 40m against us - was that just a bad kick or maybe he is under another injury cloud that is effecting his output? We need players who are durable and show up every week - our premiership squad from 2007-2011 was filled with players who managed to stay on the park for long periods of time - enough for them to build some great chemistry that ended up with premierships.. This current squad struggles massively in that area, every week we get changes and players missing for long periods.

This a dumb comparison. Caddy had no family ties to Geelong or partner or child with ties. It's apples and oranges. Its such a minute chance that it's a waste of oxygen.

Secondly if you read my post i wasn't suggesting cheap i suggested a first and second rounder or a first and a best 22 player (just not duncan). Both are quite reasonable offers and not 'cheap'.

Maybe..but life was just much simpler when we could bank on the club going to the draft , locked and loaded.
Now they're all about trading to stay in the premiership window. But not win premierships, ooooohhhh no, we can't expect premierships, even grand finals, from the aggressive trading in of players from other clubs and top 4 finishes.
