As we are now getting into the season and we are starting to get a bit more serious with discussion, seems a suitable time to post the following as it's repeatedly shown itself to be a value reference tool in trade & draft discussion

And as per normal, thanks to Lore for putting this together - always a fantastic reference tool

And yes this post is now stickied - makes it easy to keep track of (can easily reverse this though if needed)

It will take 2 years to get enough backline games into the paid to make it work. We are turning over the whole midfield by then.

If we go into next year and the year after trying to solve a midfield transition and backline structure problem at the same time we'll be a basket case
We have time…

Ok. That is completely lacking in logic and would be an idiotic way to run a club. But i will have to take your word on what the belief is of the average port punter.

But you still haven’t explained if he is too close to the players or not coaching at all.

He can’t be both.
The reason he's not coaching at all is because he's too close to the players to do so effectively. So both.

I could be wrong and the outcome is easily falsifiable. We'll know end of year

So he agreed to stop coaching the side and let Carr take over whilst he is still officially the coach?

He will be judged on his results, but he has relinquished all control willingly and is happy for his coaching reputation to be controlled by someone else?

This is nonsensical. If he wasn’t coaching he would have quit by now.

Perhaps. I can see it being a 'soft' succession plan sort of deal though. Ken sees out the contract and offers assistance to the up and coming Carr - Ken's the face while Josh works out what he's going to do. Makes it so there's less disruption when Ken leaves.

If he left abruptly, the chaos in the supporterbase (and SA media) would be absolutely wild - could really destabilise a club especially if they were otherwise going well.

I mean, it's probably a conspiracy, but it's not that crazy.

I think people are confusing intercept marking skill, with the 7th defender role there. He is a strong intercept mark but if you try make that his role he'll have to learn how to play loose defender and we'll be waiting years for him to get good at that

He doesn't play Tom Stewart's role and won't play Aliirs at Port either.
People are certainly claiming that's the role he plays. I still find it funny that the argument is he both can't play 1vs1, and simultaneously needs to play 1vs1.

Anyway, I disagree that fundamentally SDK and Esava can't play well in the same team. But I appreciate that you've actually put forward a reason as to why you think that is, rather than just because we've happened to lose 2 games where they have played - like I said SDK has played poorly by his standard all year and we've lost many games where only one of them have played.

With Henry out for the year I guess we'll find out whether we can win games with both. Hopefully for everyone's sake we can.

I don't think it's non-sensical

Thanks, like I said there's probably no reason it couldn't work long term with them taking time to learn and adapt the role. We just don't have time for that so if we want to be effective in rebuilding the midfield quickly we can't create a problem elsewhere where none exists currently, so of my 3 points I think we need to choose 2

So if you think it would work, but we just don’t have the time to let it work, what is our alternative?

I don’t agree that it will take long to click. But assuming that it did take a couple of years why don’t we have the time to let it work?

Our midfield will not let us be true contenders for the next couple of years anyway.

The alternative is to let sav go and play the backline we won a premiership with.

If we open up an issue in the seniors backline then we go onto next year with problems in 2 out of 3 areas of the ground before first bounce

Lord can't kick to save himself. Surely Duursma would be a wildly better target (that we are no chance of landing)

The main benefit though is that we get to yell "O LORD!" when he kicks it out on the full
Duursma is a good idea, just so his brother joins him in a few years

So again I will ask, what is the incentive for him to stay?

Why would he have not left already?
If he got the boot last year he wouldn't get anther shot at senior coaching. Finishing 11th with their list and profile is poor last year.

He puts his face out there as coach and they do better than 11th (which should be a given) then he is an in demand coach walking away on his own terms.

Do we have any Cat A/Cat B rookie positions available? Or do we upgrade any of those players to main list?

Just in case we need to recruit outside the square again, given our lack of quality draft picks...

It's such a wild and entertaining theory that I almost hope it's true.

Are you saying that this phantom coaching arrangement has been in place all season? That makes absolutely no sense at all.

So apparently at the start of the season Port had a coach that they didn’t trust to coach the team, plus he was despised by the fans, and their solution to this problem was to let him stay as a figurehead while having someone else actually coach the team? Wouldn’t it have been way easier and effective to just sack Ken at the start of the season?

This story gets more ludicrous by the second.

Easy money - front up to the media in the post match, help your replacement learn the ropes, watch each game from the sidelines, walk away from a club that was more successful than if you'd walked away last year.
