Just because you can trade more assets, doesn’t mean you will.

The market is still heavily dictated by what the player wants and where they want to go. Once they have decided, it is just a question of how badly the players current club gets screwed. Maybe they can get a bit less screwed than they used to, but they will still get screwed.

I’m not saying every player will be worth 3 first rounders just because clubs can trade 3 firsts. But I’m saying players of the quality of Harley Reid will be worth 3-4 first rounders.

I agree that a player nominating a club is the biggest factor in deciding where they go. And I agree that the value of draft picks are often overrated, so the club trading the gun player likely still going to be worse off. But If someone of his quality says he wants to come here, are you going to say no? And if you say yes to Reid, the fact that we CAN easily pay 3+ firsts means we probably will have to.

If he was to say I want out and they aren’t in the race for a flag what would honestly be the point of holding him???

Because a) harley will sell a massive amount of memberships and put bums on seats for the next 2 years for them (i know wce are a really wealthy club but the marketing relevance matters

B) the way hes projecting he wont be worth less in 2 years he will be worth more than he is now.

C) no incoming coach at the start of a rebuild is going to get rid of his most talented player at this age. Who knows in 12 months he might be more keen to stay.

I do buy the idea that he will be at a vic club in 2027 but theres no chance WCE trade him now imo.

I dropped it. Same source gave me info on Bailey Smith and two days later Jon Ralph blew it up with the news Geelong is “85% likely to get Smith.”

Also, if you read the original post. I said at the end of his contract. Not the end of this season. Talks are super positive and everything is indicative he will come to Geelong. Again, this is what I’ve heard and I’m happy to write it because this source is consistently on the money.

It's plausible.

I could see us getting Baz this year, going to the draft next year, and then going all out for Reid the year after.

Reid & Smith help us immediately if they arrive, and still have 10-12 years ahead of them, while we give ourselves some insurance in the year inbetween by still investing in the draft.

Other possibility is we trade our 2025 picks into 2026 if we're positive it's going to happen, a bit like what Freo have done this year to give themselves a red hot crack at Warner.

Pretty bullish on our list going forward -

Mullin & Humphries give us some genuine pace across half back and Humphries in particular is one you’d want ball in hand delivering out of D50. COS will add to our talls from next season and looks class.

Knevitt & Dempsey on either wing for the next decade.

As mentioned love the need for speed CS seems to be pivoting toward in MF. Danger & Stewart (been calling for it for a while now) for a couple of years before Clark and yes, Harley Reid take over. Today’s sacking can be a great circuit breaker if the lad truly wants to come across to us. Bailey Smith, tick. Max Holmes, tick. Bruhn and Bowes solid big bodies complements the above-mentioned.

SDK & Blics gives us great mobility, before Conway & SDK become a thing.

Neale doesn’t need to become the second coming after Hawk but has the tools to play a role for years to come.

Also starting to think that only Stanley, Hawkins & Bews will be the ones to retire come seasons end and the cliff everyone is hoping for is pushed back like the mirage that it is.

Yep, this exactly. I wouldn’t be shocked if we are trying to get Oliver as well this year (I haven’t heard this I just think it’s plausible). We will be going all out for the now since our list is built for the future already. It’s exciting times and honestly feel privileged being a Cats fan… I see the otherside of the coin being an Arsenal and Chicago Bulls fan lol.

Agree with that, a premiership or even contending between now and 2026 is a bonus IMO.

I've said for a while that the list we're building and the names we're being linked to (Smith, Reid) is setting us up for an extended premiership window from around 2027 onwards.

Between now and then, it's just about getting the talent in the door, getting games into the kids, and making sure we're an attractive proposition for players of that ilk when the time comes

The club really changed direction when Hocking came back, and I'd guess that we're really looking to capitalise on Tassie entering the competition when the league is going to be a mess.

There's going to be a premiership era for the taking when that happens if we're good enough, and the smart clubs will be planning for it.

Someone is going to have one during that period, it just comes down to who I reckon.

There's a chance for those who follow the right plan to do what Hawthorn did when the expansion clubs came in.

Yep and it’s nice hearing Jezza say he wants to play on long after his contract. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could pinch one in between as well. Our midfield is so weak this year but with Dangerfield in the side, he makes me a believer.

Being able to retain players who want a trade to Tasmania will be the key

In the last couple of weeks our midfield has settled down a lot.

Danger back and Stewart in the midfield has meant that our complementary players (Atkins, blitz, Bowes, etc) have been able to do their specialist roles rather than being the front line option.

It also means that Holmes can alternate between midfield and half back.

For a while there Bruhn was our #1 midfield option. He is going to be really good, but he is not ready for that. When he comes back he will be our #3 option. That is a job he could do very well at this stage of his career.

Our midfield is very reliant on danger staying healthy.

Also, geelong_crazy26 I would add there's more to it than the on field.

How many memberships are they going to sell purely off the excitement of the kid who had spent more time on the back pages of the West Australian than Judd ever did? You don't sell that until you're forced to

With SDK in the ruck, we are a big tall short down back.
Would Melbournes Tom McDonald be worth a play? He is a free hit. Could be a good stop gap for a few years, till the so called rucks can actually stay on the park.

He's pretty much cooked.

Remember peeps (and media). Our trade with GWS wasn’t as bad as first looks. The headline was 3 first round picks. In reality, it was picks 15 (Stone), 18 (Angwin) and 25 in the 2020 draft. With Essendon and GWS 2021 round 2 picks coming back. These ended up being in the early/mid 30s (could have been better if they missed finals). We then bundled up these 2 picks and traded to Bulldogs for, wait for it, pick 25 (Knevitt).

So Jezza for 15 and 18. I’ll buy that for a dollar!

By next year Conway would be available and SDK would be back. It really depends how happy you are with COS and Jeka as depth

Too old and cooked. Id take tomlinson before him but i dont really want either.
I do agree we need another kpd on the cheap.
I wouldnt be against borlase (he looks ok and adelaides development is terrible).
Id consider marchbank if he passed a medical (big IF though).
As much as he has brain fades howard would be ok IF st kilda let him go cheap (which i doubt).
Id be kicking the tyres on harry edwards IF he was willing to leave WA (which he probably isnt).

Hard pass.

We've got Conway and O'Sullivan to hopefully come into the team next year which would make us plenty tall. No need for an average depth player.

I'd be drafting at least 1 key position player this year especially if Foster goes but there's no need to bring in someone mature unless they're really going to move the needle.

Edwards flying below the radar in this conversation. Two more preseasons and a few extra kilos and he has the potential to be something pretty special.
Clearly got skills and yes needs the time and development.

GO Catters

SDK is only a fill in ruck atm. Conway will return back in when his fit and be back as our no 1 ruck. SDK is a back up ruck, can play the no 2 ruck when we have Conway back in there. Plus getting another mature age ruckman next year to take Stanley position. SDK is still our no 1 kpf but he has to play ruck with injury

Long term I don't like the idea of SDK playing a second ruck chop out role.

Either have him as our #1 (if he really takes off as a ruck in this time)... and then that renders Conway a waste, or have him full-time as a key defender.

What is SDK continues his good form and develops similar to his brother?
I think then we will be in a real pickle

By the looks of it we will continue to see SDK ruck for the rest of the year and I’m here for it
