Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

Don't think so, Chris Scott said we have a few balls up in the air, which did surprise at time but given he said that makes me think we've got others in mind but also he did say that with a degree of positivity.
My understanding is that we certainly have a “few” very good players on the radar - who were keen to explore joining us -but I thought it was over the next few years. That doesn’t mean we couldn’t do a couple in one year but when the club talks about “balls in the air” I think they have a longer term timeframe (eg Bailey Smith has been “done” for almost 2 years ). Of course they are all at risk until actually done

Bottom line is that I expect the club will continue to do what it has done over past decade. Get a couple of stars to join us whilst picking some gems in the drafts and keep contending

Kennedy wouldn't be the worst option if cheap, especially if we have Danger forward more, and either Clark or Bruhn don't come on or have form drops.

He had a better season this year than Atkins has based on disposals, marks, goals, i50s and metres gained.

But it really depends on the plan for Smith if we get him. You would assume we want him to be a power mid like Danger has been especially with his pace and his ability to score.

Bruhn and Atkins are nailed on midfield rotations but Clark isn't a sure thing to lock down a spot next season, and our midfield is a concern.

If Kennedy was cheap enough to bring in, its good insurance in case we don't see Stewarts future as a mid, or if CGuthrie doesn't get back to anywhere near his best, or Clark takes another year to get up to AFL level.
He is a bigger bodied mid who can get contested ball but also good at getting it and getting it to outside runners.
It will be interesting to see what the club thinks about Guthrie - will he really be a new recruit next year? And Smith.

If we have both of those back at peak form that makes a huge difference to an already good MF. Yes Danger might play less and Stewart could go back to defence…and maybe Atkins gets “passed over’. But more upside in Bowes, Bruhn and Holmes seems reasonable to assume

And that is before Clark and Knevitt trying to knoc down the door

Maybe adding another can’t hurt as long as we dont promise them any priority as I expect MF to continue to develop

That core is an aging group, it's been hollowed out

Its really only ward and coniglio plus potentially hogan that will go in the next couple years guys like kelly whitfield and toby should play well into their 30s.

And they can cover those guys so long as they hang onto green ash cadman and callaghan (admittedly the latter 2 will be chased hard by every vic club).

It's not just they'll play into their 30s, they're at the age where for most the decline starts to hit, others will need to step up to hold the group up even if they're still contributing. Their original few drafts, from Toby Green to Josh Kelly are 31, 30 by round 1 next year.

A few of their players in their prime ages are looking for the exit. Cumming and Perryman are going to exit via free agency, Peatling might be going by trade to WCE. In the past they had a line of top 10 picks ready to start up with the opportunity. They have a bunch of late first, early 2nd rounders instead, that tend to be less plug in and play.

Rohan won’t be too far away from hanging them up
I was for Rohan playing on next year as depth, but Mannagh’s emergence as a tackling and goal kicking option plus Rohan’s scull fracture following multiple concussions makes me think he’ll be encouraged to retire.
With all these CTE lawsuits being floated the AFL can’t risk Rohan playing on. He has a flag medal, can retire in peace.

Also that older guys who finish the year outside the 22 on form don’t generally go on.

Agreed, was 50/50 on Rohan going on but form and what looked an innocuous hit turning out like it has I’m of the view he should hang them up. Martin, while not a like for like, could be worth a punt, would suit our game plan particularly if Neale spends a little more time in the ruck.

Is Jed our version of Johnny Farnham - the neverending farewell tour...

From Krock

Out of contract at the end of the season, Bews says discussions between Geelong and his management about a 14th season with the club are underway.

“They’re working away in the background,” he said.

It depends on who is next cab off the rank from the 2s, I guess. Wiltshire seems a long way off it; Willis is perhaps a little more physically ready, but doesn't seem able to impact games in the manner you'd like of someone warranting promotion.

The other option - and, to be honest, my preferred option - is to play Jack Bowes forward, and include another midfielder.

I have an inherent dislike of getting a veteran player to specifically play a backup role, unless it's an extremely specialised position like ruckman or a key back. Half-forward is not that specialised; you can get square pegs into round holes, and I'd rather give us the option of promoting a younger player.

Why would we be looking at Jack Martin?

Why would we be looking at Jack Martin?
If we were happy for Rohan to play on and that’s changed then Martin for free, costing no more and possibly less than Rohans wage, isn’t the worst thing. Clever forward and if his body holds up with a different set of eyes could give us 2-3 years and you can’t deny his class.

I think any expectation on guthtie to perform should be tampered down. Highly unlikely at that age and layoff he will be a significant contributor. I think thr impact this season of tuohy or duncan is probably a realistic sight.

I want to see max holmes given full midfield minutes with baz, and jhye clark to be pushed big time over pre season for a rotating inside role with bruhn.
