Ask and we'll try our best to assist - so here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

As normal, would like to acknowledge & thank Lore for creating this, keeping it up to date and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Harsh reminder of Geelong 1989 until 1995. The running joke was -
Q. who will win the flag?
A. whoever plays Geelong.
As I said on the main board thread, Geelong of that era at least had the excuse of being major underdogs in most of those GF defeats. 1992 you could call 50-50, but literally nobody was seriously expecting us to beat Hawthorn 1989, WCE 1994 or Carlton 1995. It's terribly disappointing, but not really unexpected.

Sydney went in as red hot favourites in at least 3 of their 4 defeats. That's the difference.

‘92 felt like the one that got away. But if you look at our team compared with WC, we were very reliant on our top 6-8 players. Our bottom 6 were pretty ordinary.

‘89 for me was our best team of those 4. We were probably a good key defender away from winning it. The prelim against Ess showed how good we were if we focused and played the game on our terms. Unfortunately we were too conscious the following week of playing the man for the first 3/4.

That's why Dempsey is still a long way off his ceiling.

I only saw him with one centre bounce attend in the prelim. But won the pill albeit with a scrambled kick forward.

He will weave his way out of CBounces in future years.

Edit. Might have been a general ball up stoppage in the middle....which would be even more impressive with many more attendees!
He has been thrown into the guts in the 2s and did very well there from memory. He's starting to get the build. Very Isaac Heeney type discussion with him in the future i think.

The only question is his ability to win the contested ball. Everything else is there
I agree.

I have pumped Dempsey up as much as anyone but he doesn't love crashing in.

Maybe that will improve as he adds more size but I have seen him hold back from making contact a few times (but that's not his go so I'm not gonna hold it against him).

I do think he'd be terrific being fed the ball just on the outskirts of the contest in the guts as he has great agility to create time and space for himself.

I think also he's so early into his career I think he's just following coaching instructions to sag off the contest to receive at all times. With more experience i think he'd have had more of a crack at the hard ball, but he's still not far out of his basketball career.

Yeah that's the hope.

As I said... he has not gone full-on at the hard pill a few times so I don't fully buy the "following instructions" thing.

In saying that I'm all for giving him a crack in the middle in the future.

If Bruhn/Clark could turn into hard-ball winning machines like Rowell or Libba in the middle, then guys like Smith, Dempsey and Holmes could become very damaging outside mids (well they already are damaging but our combo would be nice).

I have doubts about guys like Bruhn /Clark, but I can dream.

Fort didn't actually beat Grundy.
But It didn't matter because brisbanes midfield was the best which is something our MF isn't. So we need better rucks.
On the whole yes but I thought Fort was fantastic early and contributed well.
Was always going to run out of gas which he did in the second half , game was won by then though.
I actually thought Grundy was the missing piece of the Swans puzzle but he tapered off , disappointing for the Swans

Any announcements today do we think?
Seems to be dragging the chain a lot on this to be honest, just get it out in the open instead of playing games. If no announcement this week then who the hell knows whats happening in his head

I'll pass this onto Paul Connors and let him know Cats fans are getting restless. I'm sure that will speed things up.

Connors and The Cat's are both pro's at what they do. I'm happy to leave it in their safe and very capable hands. If there's been no announcement yet, I'm sure it's a process that both parties are well across and have agreed on.

Calm the farm people - it's happening. And has been since this time last season.

Wasn't it SDK's first game as a ruckman? If so, he was thrown to the lions by coming up against his specialist big brother ruck at the MCG.
It was and it shell shocked him to start - particularly when it was dished out by his older brother.
He steadied as the game wore on and did much better as ruck in subsequent games.
Picking up > 20 possessions in each of his ruck games is a fantastic achievement , particularly when you are an elite handballer.
He could ruck a lot more and I'd back him in that role with some ruck craft training in the preseason.
Kids a super talent , we need to keep him.

Someone in these comments linked Houston to us

I think he is focussed on too much money…

I have “heard” that we are confident of getting another elite young (around 23yo) to come in on top of Bailey. And think from interstate (coming home)

The names that fit the bill are butters and lord and maybe Housten.

Obviously butters will be a game changer like Danger was but I feel like it might be a year or two too early? I am very confident that we have another big name ready to come but not confident whether it is this year or over the next couole

The TDK v SDK was not Sam's 1st game as a ruckman.

He rucked some games last year.

It was his first ruckman game this year... but not first ruck game in the AFL.

The Butters discussions are real and have been since his draft year. Geelong were all over him. But the discussions with his manager are similar to the discussions we were having with Smith and his manager this time last year. I think Geelong will keep their powder dry and not sell the farm this year, for a player they're confident they can land next.

Ollie Lord is a "no" and I've not heard anything that links us to Houston.

But I thought he had already bought the farm.

Sdk was smashed at the ruck comtests in every game he rucked. And a handful of centre clearances doesnt offset even remotely how convincingly he was beaten.

He can get possessions on the wing. Doesnt need to ruck to get possessions.

Brayshaw?

I think that it will happen soon enough. Probably tomorrow.

I was just trying to generate some conversation dude.

Any announcements today do we think?

Could well be waiting for Geelong & Bulldogs to have bit of a chat first to see if all parties are on a similar page, rather than making an announcement and straight into stalemate territory

We've seen the news over recent weeks of Dan Houston being open to a trade back to Vic, with Carlton one of the suggested options, but today's news is suggesting that Port & Carlton are so far away on a trade, that Port doesn't want to waste their time with Carlton. Port are reportedly looking for 2 x first round picks, with one being this years draft - the reported first offer from Carlton is out of contract Matt Owies & next years first

Thinking that the Smith trade is wanting to be run a bit more professional rather than back & forth in the media

Can we put the "SDK wants out" rumours to bed already?

Cats have already said they aren't trading him and he'll see out his contract.
Edmund and Twomey already said multiple times it isn't happening.

Anything else suggested is coming from Melbourne based club fans making up stories trying to drive clicks...
It's just a waste of time. He's contracted, he isn't going anywhere anytime soon.
