The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

Oliver i hope he does join Geelong

Geelong just hasnt fallen off that cliff , and the reason being the Cats just keep replenishing with very good players , and Oliver he is a really good proven top line player and at 27 there are still plenty of good years in front of him

Interesting comments by David Walls the Frem recruiting manager re Jack Martin , because Freo were interested in him " Jack was going to be a risk whichever way you look at it , given his injury history . When he is up and going he is a top line player , but his injury history is significant "

Ive never watched him at Carlton , but the interesting point is , he did call him a top line player

I don't know much about Carlton but per some fans I know, he is.

He's just injured majority of the time.

They don't want to solve it. The AFL wants North to get more for McKay than the Hawks got for Buddy.

It creates a moral hazard to become a North. Which can be its own death spiral.

The cap would fix the Buddy side, but the for the North side the team would get closer to market value.

Id make all OOC players FA and no comp but that probably too radical. Id change the salcap too.

At the end of the day Oliver did sign a mega deal on mega money.. bet he couldn't have got pen to paper quickly enough either.

If a move can't be facilitated he sucks it up or walks away completely

I'm not sure that's true. The problem here is there's a very obvious risk that he goes off the rails again this preseason and gives his new club nothing. And no recruiter wants to pay 6x $900k+ with potentially zero payoff.

I think Geelong is willing to pay something closer to $600k over 6 years which is still a huge risk. But that would be lucky to be band 2.

I would say it's done 7:35pm. If you walk up with the paperwork before the time runs out they don't turn the trade away

In my time following the CATS and footy (over 60 years) I cannot recall what appears to be a worse run club.

Port at one point on and off field were a massive rabble, and WCE the last 2 seasons as well.
And North looked like absolute shit the year Scott left them.

I'm wondering if we make an early trade involving our future 2nd or 3rd round pick to take our future first off the table, at least for early trade negotiations

Similar to our approach when we bought in Tanner & Ollie in 22
