Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Free Agency Period

The AFL introduced free agency at the end of the 2012 season, giving players another vehicle where they can transfer from one club to another. Free agency is a common form of player movement in major football and sporting codes around the world.

Free Agency Opens: Friday October 4 at 9.00am
Free Agency Closes: Friday October 11 at 5.00pm

Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period

Trade Period Opens: Monday October 7 at 9.00am
Trade Period Closes: Wednesday October 16 at 7.30pm

Yes, but wouldn’t it be 2025 1st, 2027 1st, 2029 1st as an example unless you are trading back into the 1st round.

We could get funky stuff like this:

The Los Angeles Clippers reportedly reached an agreement Saturday to acquire All-Star forward Paul George from the Oklahoma City Thunder for forward Danilo Gallinari, guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and a massive haul of draft picks, including five first-round selections.

Meanwhile, OKC's haul of draft assets includes L.A.'s unprotected first-round picks in 2022, 2024 and 2026, along with 2021 (unprotected) and 2023 (protected) first-round selections via the Miami Heat and the option to swap picks with the Thunder in 2023 and 2025, according to the ESPN report.

No. Two years ahead is what they propose. They have already theorised ..that clubs will need to know what the draft gifts will be given to Tassy as 2027 will be the start of the Tas compromised drafts.. Id say 2027,28,29 may all be affect by Tassy.

The long term contracts are often ridiculed, but this is a clear benefit to the clubs. There's no way Richmond would be getting 10 and 11 for Bolton, or 6 and 23 for Rioli if they were out of contract.

Which is why the Houston trade was so bad for Port considering he has achieved more than either of those and had 3 years to run on his contract.

I think it reflects a little of the desperation of some clubs to target contracted players in such a heavy handed manner.

At some point, the clubs should have walked away from the price, their unwillingness to do so caused the cost to spiral.

“Former Melbourne Football Club president Glen Bartlett has accused new president Brad Green and other directors of defaming him and his partner in statements issued by the club, one of which was retweeted by Green.”

Bartlett was given permission to proceed with legal action.
Bartlett’s statement of claim in his defamation case against Green, former club president Kate Roffey and the club’s board of directors was released by the Federal Court on Tuesday. He’s suing other board directors too.
Blah! Blah! Blah!

How many of these selections will Richmond screw up on draft night?

One would have to think that once they take 5 ..they might start to look at offer in draft to trade into next year…. we have trade with them before that worked for both …we got MaxH and they got Brown.

They are finding out the cost of picking the wrong person offside …. How much to make the whole thing disappear?

Geez I reckon our #17 could come in handy for amo to get Butters.

Not a chance in the world they walk away from it and take zero for Smith.
What happens to Smith in 2025?

He nominated Geelong, if the trade fails + he decides not to risk ND, what then?

Maybe.

I think the draft has lost its power due to the dilution thru Father Son, Academy , Nga and especially Free Agency comp. ….. then add that the days of expected loyalty are done. Bottom clubs that are not big clubs will struggle to hold players
You can see Gold Coast are just going flat stick to improve “now” cause if they don't then they will lose players..

Historically the strike rate for picks hits around 1/3 after the 4th pick of the draft. In a trade scenario where, it was hard to stockpile enough early picks which made it difficult to overpay unless you were late in a premiership window and went all in for an aging vet.

Recent history showed us that geelong playing brisbane in a final in melbourne with a week off was a 100 percent chance of being a win. Certainly the way many were considering it pre game. Gave me geelong vs freo 2013 final at home vibes.

Not saying its not likely to go through. The risk of it not going through is very real though. Games of chicken involve people egos. Sometimes egos drive outcomes of disaster.
There was only one data point on us beating Brisbane, and the prelim optimism was... optimistic, but far from certain.

In terms of the Smith deal - the number of good out-of-contract players who have had to go through the PSD or ND, you could count on one hand over the last twenty years. Nick Stevens, Luke Ball, Jack Martin and Ben Jacobs are pretty much it, plus Rawlings and Tippett (which were stitch-ups by the clubs involved).

One can see Harley Reid will be 4 R1’s. …Trade a pick into future ..and use two Futures…. and that only works in OOC. Free Agents and DFA are going to become more important..

How much would Rich have demanded for Baker if West Coast could dip into the future? Would have been better for West Coast to tell him to sign for unders at Rich for one extra year .. and get him as a FA..

He would have no choice but to either go through the ND, re-sign with the Dogs, or sit out football.

There is the PSD, but that's a bigger risk to him because PSD picks aren't worth anything.

See that Harley Reid trade starts to be dangerous for both player and club,, a decade ago we got peak Danger for essentially a mid first rounder and a packet of chips. Even peak Ablett couldn't get it done by himself. Harley Reid would see himself on a hollowed out team halfway through his contract. One bad twist and the club is in big trouble.

After this trade period I see clubs less willing to chase quality contracted players. WCE wouldn't entertain a Baker trade unless, Richmond were throwing him away.

I believe it is a great result for Cats that Tigers traded 14
14 was the only concern to us in my opinion in the hands of Richmond

Interstate teams will not take Baz in first round

So this trade should help us in the negotiations
The big result for me was the Houston trade. I don't see a scenario where any side other than the pies would draft Smith

Legal pursuit of defamation over a re-tweet is pretty ridiculous IMO.

We just need to taper the expectations a little; the guy is coming off a year missed with an ACL.
The excitement for Bailey Smith to join Geelong is buoying hopes for 2025.

iameviljez as the voice of reason gives sound advice.

Found this just now from Bazlenka’s IG training posts:

Note the date.

Those following his IG see he’s training enthusiastically + very hard. He’s giving 110%. Still, training + AFL games are different levels.

I’m tempering my hopes with iameviljez‘s wisdom.

Giving Smith time to get to AFL will be rewarded.
