Do you think the coaches may have liked what they saw from De Koning during the brief time he played in the ruck?
If so, they may have plans to make the transition to that part of the ground.

With Edwards and Conway in the wings, Stanley as ample backup, do we really need another ruckman?

Stanley won't play much vfl he will get the final year cellar thing (play afl or get rested won't play much vfl)
Edwards is very raw and will probably start mainly as a fwd in the vfl
And Conway will need a lot of managing
So there's room for another ruck imo

I do think the coaches might like de koning there but we will see. He is going to need to bulk up a lot and develop his ruck craft to play the no1 role each week. And it's a big risk a key player getting injured playing that position.

I'm with you, given we only have late picks in the draft, I just can't see how we can replace all the lost players. I would hate to think we will throw away future draft picks to get back into this year's draft. It's a vicious cycle.

We can't be asking sensitive questions about things like weight in a professional sport!

It's not as if it's a sport where weight correlates to the ability to run, exert physical pressure, withstand physical pressure, and hold your ground etc......

There are sensitivities to protect here. Frankly, I'm surprised we're still allowed to discuss height. I mean, what relevance does that have?!!

A team has as many picks as it has live list spots.

Which is becoming a habit for Geelong. Last year we were the last team still choosing players after all other teams had dropped out. The same will happen this year. You can hope to find a rough diamond with these late picks but you'll mostly get list fillers for the VFL team who will be jettisoned after a couple of years.It would be interesting to see some analysis on how many of our late draft picks ever play a game of AFL.

He was quick for a ruck with excellent acceleration hence the incredible leap. But he blew up after about 10 minutes. He'd need a lot of fitness work to get to the level.

Yeah, that's what happens when you have retirements and you're still winning plenty of footy games. There isn't much you can do about it.

FWIW, our strike rate above roughly p55-ish seems to be about 1 in 4, 1 in 5.

We only had 2 retirements and Foster gave it away. (Line ball if he was offered a contract). That makes 7 delistings. All up we are turning over about 22% of the list. 7 list spots to fill but I think 3 will be rookies so only taking 4 picks to the draft.

Effectively, 3 retirements (as much as Rohan was technically delisted, he doesn't have another season of AFL footy in him).

There were 15 selections taken from 50 pick last year:

• 2 picks each for St Kilda, Brisbane & Port
• 3 picks for Geelong

So 4 teams taking 9 of the last 15 picks; that's a bit different to "Geelong still choosing after all other teams had dropped out"

And seems there was a few diamonds in the rough late in last years draft

Humphries is great. But you're more likely to select a Cooper Whyte, Flynn Kroeger, Nick Stevens, Phoenix Foster or Cameron Taheny with those late picks, as we have in the last few years. People just happen to forget about them.

Bold is clearly not true because even by your own words, only 13 teams of the other 17 teams had dropped - 13 is clearly not "all other teams" and Brisbane took the last pick in the draft, meaning there was still another team picking after we took our last pick...


So how about instead I cut it off at 45 instead - the first pick of the 3rd round and from that point you could see that the Bulldogs took 3 of their 6 picks, while all 3 of Port's ND picks were taken from pick 48 onwards

That then works out as 3 teams taking 9 of the last 20 picks - or is that more manipulation?




It would be great to have half a dozen picks in the first 30 every year, but that's not a reality for teams who are continually trying to compete at the pointy end of the season

You won't always find a Lawson Humphries late in the draft, but at the same time you may select a Cooper Stephens in the first round who ends up a bust across two teams. Looking at the last 20 picks of last years draft, there's already 5 players with more career AFL games to their name than the former first round pick in Stephens

Maybe there comes a time where we've got to start focusing less on what number a player was drafted at and focus more on what we see from that player when they get their opportunity

I know that Dear was an F&S pick & Thomas was an academy pick - but both could easily have had teams put a bid on them earlier in the draft, and I wonder if in a year or two (if not now) some will be asking questions as to why teams didn't bid on them

That is an extremely fine group of pick 45 plus selections there. Freijah, Dear, Thomas and Humphries could all be stars.

Looks like Wiltshire didn't play too much this season so guessing he was injured. Is he a good small forward ? What do you think the club sees in him ?
