Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Draft and Trade Period Key Dates

Oct 17 to Nov 8: Pick swap window
Nov 1 to Nov 8: Delisted free agency period
Nov 20-21: Telstra AFL Draft
Nov 22: Telstra Pre-Season Draft and Rookie Draft

Apologies if some has already asked this question.

I don’t follow how we have “3 INS” and 10 “outs”. We don’t have 7 picks in the draft as far as I know.

What are peoples thoughts on how we get a full squad?

4 ND picks (unless we run with a bigger rookie list) and 3 rookie draft picks.

Senior list outs:
- Hawkins, Tuohy, Foster, Parfitt, Rohan & Willis

Rookie list Cat-A outs:
- Hardie, Jeka & Murdoch

Rookie list Cat-B out:
- Furphy

Senior list ins:
- Martin & Smith

Rookie list Cat-B in:
- Cillian Burke

---

That all equates to our Cat-B rookie list spots being full

While we've got a bit of availability between our Senior list & Cat-A rookie spots, with 7 current vacancies there

We have more than sufficient draft picks for both the ND & rookie drafts to fill those spots - it's just that they aren't all top 50 picks; the doc at the top of the page lists 11 picks for us

The reality is that Clubs take as many draft picks into the ND as they vacant list spots - it's the key reason for Brisbane making the seemingly meaningless pick trade with Collingwood today because they wouldn't have taken pick 66 into the draft due to insufficient list spots

Trading two picks to jump up a couple of spots gives them extra points for now but they can always trade back on the night of they want

Touched on this a while back, but essentially my thoughts are:

OUT -

(Main list): Hawkins, Tuohy, Willis, Rohan, Foster, Parfitt
(Rookie list): Murdoch, Hardie, Jeka, Furphy

IN -

(Main list): B. Smith, J. Martin (4 spots remaining)
Rookie list): C. Murphy (3 Cat A spots remaining)

Hypothetical -

Future 1st traded for 15, 16, 18, 23 etc. - Shanahan, Hotton, J. Whitlock, Gerryn etc.

40 (wound back from 45 after bids) - Jacques

53'ish - J. Henderson (mature age pick)

60'ish - S. Davidson (mature age pick)

Rookie pick - Blakiston
Rookie pick - Geelong VFL pick up
Rookie pick - spot left open for SSP or MSD

Isn't too hard when you go through it like that. Many different variables, but it's a good draft to have spots open- given the evenness of it. Not to mention we excel at the back end anyway, with Wellsy at the helm.

With the draft only 12 days away thought it would be interesting to see what your “realistic, ideal” draft would be?

For me I think it’s essential we target a couple of talls with our picks. Having lost Hawkins and Foster this area of our list requires replenishing. Other than that we could do with a ruck but I’d be waiting for the rookie draft to add a ruck to our list.

So for me I’d be trading our FF with one of Richmond’s late first rounders to secure Gerreyn who I see as a KPF with lots of scope for improvement.

Our next pick I’m hoping that either Jaques or Angus Clarke are available. Both good ball users, intercept marks, and smart decision makers. Probably leaning slightly towards Clarke with his extra height but happy to take either.

Our last 2 picks will be really determined by who’s left. Both late picks. I imagine one will be used on Jack Henderson based on the links we’ve heard.

Clancy Dennis would be a good tall defender to take if available with one of our last two picks. Other WA kids in Boxhall and Hayes are also attractive options late.

I'm not comfortable trading our FF nothing against this draft but just the risk of us missing finals next year. I can see why the club might do otherwise.

It's hard because a lot of players I would like I can see going in the 20s/30s.

I'd like Clarke at 45 and Jacques is good.
More likely someone like ough and I'd love it if Barrett got through.
Our later picks I reckon there's at least one kpf I'd certainly like nicholls.
I think at least one mature ager I hope it's henderson or bice.
I reckon we will take Blakiston or a similar ruck type either in the main or rookie draft.

Ah, thanks, that makes perfect sense. Would be great if we can get into the first round.

Do you think there's any way we redraft any recently delisted players?

Potentially.

There’s plenty of ways in which doing so could be the opposite of great.

We could pick a dud.

We could lose an early pick next year.

We might lose trade capital to bring in a player we like.

The main thing is picking a very good player if we trade back into the first round.

If we don’t… it’s not great at all.

If Holmes lightning strikes twice we will all be chuffed.

Only time will tell.

If the rumors are true that Zack Butters might be interested in coming to Geelong next year, then we will need to keep those future picks, so we have some capital to make a trade.

I don't know who the Cats will draft this year, but I trust our recruiting guys to do a good job. Their track record is pretty good.

LDU next year

Butters in 2026

No draft picks or trading required
