Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Draft and Trade Period Key Dates

Oct 17 to Nov 8: Pick swap window
Nov 1 to Nov 8: Delisted free agency period
Nov 20-21: Telstra AFL Draft
Nov 22: Telstra Pre-Season Draft and Rookie Draft

Till I see it operation Im not yet sure it will upscale the amount of trades long term. Short term maybe. For a while each club will have more to trade but then that will ease and demands will see players of the standard of Bailey Smith …. being asked to be traded for 2 r1’s.
I agree short term it may increase the number of trades but eventually teams will just start asking for more per player which will bring the number back down.

What is a standard 1st for a trade now will eventually become 2 1st rounders and what was 2 1sts will become 3.

Now this just could be me being pessimistic but i just don't see clubs going well we can get more now but we won't.

It will require clubs being more disciplined and irksome in deals when they can but players in contract are going to cost more.

For example the leverage Geelong had this year was that they portrayed that they would take BSmith in the national draft with R1. If the demands are over played then perhaps we see that eventuate more. It worked this year with such a talented draft and the level of Smith and him being out of contract but probably would not work with a less draft and a player even more desirable.

What would Port wanted for Houston this year? What would Port demand for Butters for example? If still contracted.. almost certainly multiple R1 picks and if they know clubs can access multiple years ahead … etc..

Clubs will have to just become more disciplined at walking away if an FA is matched or not trading overs for an ooc player. Obviously there's some like Reid in 2026 that you would trade overs for but most players you shouldn't.

Agree contract is going to be important.

Dangerfield trade happened the first year they allowed futures trading. Crows rightfully felt aggrieved at a mid first and a second on offer and wanted more. We spent our future first on Lachie Henderson instead.

They probably look at the outcome for the pick and say ..they'd have liked Berry..

Are we still the only club that has FA players matched? (Even if Dangerfield was technically not matched) …. The Crows might have felt aggrieved … id imagine they would have felt even worse if they had only received FA comp. P18?

This is exactly it.. I can guarantee it will happen.

Future trading into 3yrs time will benefit clubs losing players not clubs gaining players.

It will become like the Jeremy Cameron scenario… GWS demanded all 3 firsts because we had them… had we only had 1 available.. they would have been forced to take that.

The less you have to trade when a player nominates you the better. You end up with more Ollie Henry deals than Cameron deals.

This will not benefit geelong

The rumour is only that he bought land, apparently half way between baccus marsh and Geelong somewhere. Probably just for his post career retirement
We've had the handshake agreement stuff too from our own JC13 in here...but it's still just rumours, and open to change too.

Easier to just ride the wave with these things than locking yourself in to whether it will or won't happen IMO.

If it happens, it happens. The club will survive either way.

Yeah but the best course of action is not always doing what's easy. Sometimes you have to go out of your way to drive opposition supporters insane

Oh we'll still do that, but that's for the MB/Bay and riling your mates up.

On here though, better to just let things play out before arguing over whether it will or won't happen for 12-24 months.

Id imagine if >F 2 years had been in this year … would we have used it to get Oliver?

Spot on. A lot of Cats fans like to think the Kelly trade was why we were able to get Cameron but the truth is if we didn't have those extra picks we'd have got Cameron for free. Richmond got Lynch for free because they were at the top of the ladder and the Suns were at the bottom so the AFL's compensation pick was far better than anything Richmond could give in a trade. We also had to trade for Dangerfield because we missed the eight that year while the Crows played finals, our best pick was better than what the AFL was offering in compensation. The compensation system is utterly broken but we're the only team that's been ****ed over by it so far and so nobody cares.

At some point a free agent will go to a bottom club from a top club and the top club will match the offer and force a trade then take their top five pick and the AFL will act utterly gobsmacked that such a scenario could happen and will finally change the rules.
