Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Draft and Trade Period Key Dates

Oct 17 to Nov 8: Pick swap window
Nov 1 to Nov 8: Delisted free agency period
Nov 20-21: Telstra AFL Draft
Nov 22: Telstra Pre-Season Draft and Rookie Draft

Whenever the draft media guys talk about clubs trying to trade back into this years first round, we never get a mention.

It's because other clubs might make stronger offers to get back in than we will.

This is exactly it.. I can guarantee it will happen.

Future trading into 3yrs time will benefit clubs losing players not clubs gaining players.

It will become like the Jeremy Cameron scenario… GWS demanded all 3 firsts because we had them… had we only had 1 available.. they would have been forced to take that.

The less you have to trade when a player nominates you the better. You end up with more Ollie Henry deals than Cameron deals.

This will not benefit geelong

Not sure I agree with this.

Regardless of the measures put in place to promote equity, usually the good clubs work out how to use it to their advantage. We’ll run clubs attract the best available players and regardless of the extra futures available, Geelong will still be a strong player come trade time if we continue to be a strong and stable club.

SEN did a full phantom draft today and didn’t account for live trades
Here’s who they had us taking

Pick 42. (Geelong) – Xavier Ivisic
Geelong Falcons/Vic Country – MID/FWD, 181cm
The Cats will have a keen eye on Ivisic as a local product, a well-known talent for his tenacity and running capacity as a half-forward/inside midfielder combo, capable of producing a punch with his quick decision-making.

Gabriel Stumpf
Northern Knights/Vic Metro – FWD, 196cm
Best known for his spectacular National Draft Combine results. Stumpf is an incredibly athletic prospect, mainly untapped with his potential as a marking key forward, often classier at ground level where he was swift to burn his opponents with speed and assist opportunities for the smaller forwards surrounding him.

Pick 64. (Geelong) – Patrick Retschko
Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro – WING, 186cm
Known for running 2km before every game, Retschko’s outside run would compete at the Olympics, known for his two-way running and consistency at holding width with his ball movement to break forward in transition, still needs to improve his ball-use by foot.

They also had sims and gerryn going 47 and 60. Cannot see that happening. Seems a little way off what Towney and others have been speculating.

Well we now know 3 players we won’t be taking.

I presume the easiest picks for Geelong would always be to take the highest rated Falcon…. but another 181cm type is not what I'd add unless they were very high end.

The last two probably match the known about Geelong in that we like guys who can run and have a foundation to build on...

I cant say I have heard much on Patrick Retschko …. but who knows … we have pulled stealth names before. More likely we can scrub these three names … I think the late mail with in a day or two of the draft might be more accurate.

I saw a fair bit of Retschko this year playing for Caulfield Grammar. He’s a solid guy that to me lacks the development that others still have in them. He’s handy but I see him as a rookie pick if he gets taken.

If the draft went the way it did with SEN I’d be staggered if we didn’t take either Sims or Gerreyn with our first selection.

His highlights look vanillia but he would not be the first guys who built a from that…. Id certainly take S or G etc.. interesting that they had FloydB going at 36 before both of them.. I wonder if we trade in using our Fr2 to get another pick around that range. Marshall last to P30… then someone needs to totally rejig bidding. Id love someone like StKilda or melb to really go early with him.

IMO..The names for us do not resonate inside info more ..just a type that sync with our pick profile

So probably someone that’s gonna put up decent vfl numbers but not be quick enough for afl?
should be but he's not really even doing that.

There is an argument that he's smashing himself in the gym and dropping his playing weight which is taxing on the body and affecting his VFL performances. While I'm not sure I buy it it would explain why he looked better playing 2s in 2023 as a school kid getting a trial than he did as a professional player last year.

I haven't seen or heard a thing about Retschko but sign me up. We could use a Murdoch

Yeah it feels like what they've predicted is a long way off.

If it did eventuate that way, I'd honestly consider trading back in to pick up two of Gerryn/Stumpf/Sims...but I can't see all 3 being available for us at our first, let alone after our pick.

Key forwards to me are a little like QBs in the NFL. If you're relatively settled on a needs basis across your list, you just take one or two late in most drafts, providing they've got a semblance of talent, and it looks like their skills transfer.

If they're good enough to make it, you've plucked the most prized position in football cheaply, and can either lock in that magnet on the whiteboard for 15 years, or trade them out for a small fortune.

If they don't, you just churn the list and keep on looking. It's not like those later picks are highly valued or likely to make it anyway.

I doubt clubs expected Lewis, Larkey, Treacy, Walker, heck even Neale to become what they did when they plucked them from relative obscurity, but sometimes you just strike gold.

I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of that kicking action but the bloke handballs like Brandon ah chee.

I’d say with us looking at filling 4 list spots via the ND that we will be trading either our FF or F2 back in.

FF will probably get us Clarke or confirms Gerreyn or Sims - F2 allows us to perhaps get in front of a club if there’s someone we like and sense might be taken a touch earlier. Maybe Boxshall?

There’s such an even spread of talent that to try and predict how the draft will take shape is impossible.

I don't mind stumpf but if we are picking a kpf that late I'd prefer West or nicholls (if gerryn is gone).

Retschko is interesting but I do wonder if Geelong and a few other clubs look at Sam toner late.

Ivisic is decent but I'm not sure he fills a need for us.
