Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

Oct 17 to Nov 8: Pick swap window
Nov 1 to Nov 8: Delisted free agency period

We're thin on tall forwards but I also don't think paying up to get a kid in makes much sense.

The history of tall forwards taken outside the top 20 is basically horrible. It feels like a massive risk to give up a future first for a tall forward like Gerreyn who has had exposure but not impressed enough to go in the top 25.

I'd prefer to save our future first and go big at a Cadman, JUH, etc type who look ready to become a long-term quality player than play overs for a very speculative draftee.

Fair call and I can see that pov. The club will know whether a play for Cadman is realistic or not. I’m not a fan of paying up a lot for JUH.

Whilst the history of tall forwards taken in the draft isn’t great - you could argue that even those taken high haven’t exactly shot the lights out either. I think it’s more about talent ID. If you think a particular player has the attributes to be an AFL standard KPF, regardless of where he might be rated pre draft then just get him.

It seems to be the consensus that Armstrong and Shanahan are the first two KPF’s to be taken and likely in the first 20 or so picks. After that it gets a bit murkier with Sims, Gerreyn, Faull, Burmeister, Nicholls, Stumpf and West all having their fans and rated differently.

We could just wait till our first pick and see who’s left. Or we could be proactive if we really like one of them and have a crack. I’ll accept what the club does. They spend far longer identifying and analysing these players than I do.

You could certainly make a case for that.

Never heard of Leigh Willison but looked him up because of the two Brownlow votes. He got it on debut for a 15 touch 1 goal game. Robert Scott had 20 and kicked 4 and didn't get a vote. Good to know the umps have always been at it.

Edit: Did you get that from AFL tables? maybe they are wrong. 3 votes Tim McGrath, 1 vote to a Lawrence Bingham who had 7 touches. Doesn't seem right.

This is from Footywire for that match:

If what you say is true, then I imagine it would be a 'ply your trade in the WAFL and show us it's worth picking you back up/over your injury run, and then we'll talk next year' situation.

No chance he signs with a WAFL club and then we pick him up a mere month later.
You’re 100% correct, I didn’t know he signed with the WAFL club.

Just walked in, saw he was with an offical, later Mackie and lappin and when parting ways were organising a further meeting for next week.

Coincidence maybe.

Cooper stephens I’ve just spotted down at the club talking with what looks to be an official…

Heard the words “next year” murmured when walking past

Back on the list as a rookie maybe?

Vfl list I would suggest same as Dean gore and Darcy Lang did. Doubt he's on an afl list.

Was Ugrinic on our list longer than Josh Cowan?

Cowan at least played some games of AFL, granted was a very late draft pick too... Kind of surprised he was on our list for so long tbh.

Ugrinic was drafted in 1993 but stayed in Adelaide for 1994 and 1995, didn't actually play for Geelong until 1996 and his last season was 1998. Cowan was 2010-2017, which is insane given how little he showed.

Never knew there was a draft in 1982. Any good players come from that draft?
Thought it began in 1986.

It’s amazing that we have had only 2, top 5 picks based on ladder position (both pick 5) in the near 40 years of the draft. Both duds btw.

We drafted Brad Hardie in the 1982 draft, though he never joined the club.

Pretty hard to get excited about the draft this year. Looking back over our drafts from 2016 on our average yield is just over 2 players that have a career. From the 2022 draft only Jyhe Clark is left on the list. Conway and Knevitt who may or may not make it plus Dempsey from the 2021 draft.

Low chance that we score another Humphries but as supporters we live in hope of what we as Cat supporters have come to view as the Wells special.

The reality is that of the 7 we draft this year 5-6 will have left the club in 2 years. It is a brutal game for young kids (their dreams taken from them so quickly) and the turnover is high.

I think it’s getting harder and harder to pluck gems out the back ends of the underage system as recruitment is getting better and better by the year with technology advancements and resources.
Quite often have to look outside the box to senior leagues and in particular outside of VIC like we did with humphries.

There will always be some capable diamonds in the rough. It takes a talented eye to identify them when they are traveling a non traditional pathway.
