With the drafting of Humphries and Edwards last year, any chance we are trying to position ourselves for the best chance to try and trade for Harley Reid in a couple of years time. More WA kids this year perhaps.

No, and if the primary reason for drafting youngsters from a certain region is because you think it gives you a starting basis for a potential future trade, then you're drafting players for the wrong reason & it's a pretty shit thing to do

When we traded up for Holmes, we had not been linked to the player. I suspect it would be our strategy again to keep quiet on who we really want. That being said, we do need to have conversations with clubs that might entertain a pick swap. These conversations absolutely would get leaked… “Geelong are keen to trade up”. Then journos and others try to think about who that might be for. Hence links to Horton, Dodson, Clarke. Most likely, it’s only Mackie and co who know. If we trade up, I’ll back the club that they believe player x is worth whatever pick, even if we miss finals next year.
I get why plenty aren’t keen on drafting for half backs with high-ish picks, but if Angus Clarke is available I’m pulling the trigger! Might be just just out of reach though unfortunately.

No clubs mentioned, but wonder where he may end up if he does decide retirement isn't for him at this age

He doesn't like the limelight and I get he would have made a stack of money from footy and probably owns his house and a couple of investment properties to live off but what does he actually do outside of footy? Joe not having a tv is about the only thing that gets regurgitated by the media.

If he did want to make a comeback I bet Sydney would be the team to go hard at him.

I'm not sure if it was Mitch Cleary who mentioned it when the retirement speculation started just prior to the GF, but Joe lives northern NSW on farmland in a pretty chill life - it was said his daily commute for training & such was 2hrs each way

When it was mentioned, it sounded a similar situation to say Cameron or Stanley on their farms, but they have no where near a 2hr commute to get to the club

Wonder if that lifestyle situation is why we were linked to him, even if it was a joke

He lives in Byron Bay. I think he wanted to get out of the Victorian bubble. Yeah he could live on a farm near Geelong but it is still a mad football area and anywhere he goes he is still getting swamped. Hipsters in Byron Bay wouldn't know who he is or care if they did.

My hopes:

1. Trade our F1 to get into the first round this year for Hotton, Shanahan, one of the tall twins etc types that are talked about the 16-22 mark. Trading this pick makes it easier to get a RFA for free next year…

2. That if we do, we do not draft a first ruck for the third time in as many years in Dodson. It’s list mismanagement by definition as we can only play one of these, and renders the other two redundant. Waste of selections. We need a stop gap ruck more so than a third developing ruck on the list. A 29 yr old to bridge until Conway is 25 and ready to assume the role.

3. Gabriel Stumpf with one of our later picks. Think this guy could be a diamond.

4. Not to draft dud falcons for the sake of them being a falcon. Jaques falls into this category for mine.

I assumed that they would be happy to trade out 28 and 31 to something with value next year allowing them to either hold it or trade back in after Kako had been drafted. They already hold a couple of FF so have the capacity to get back in already I suppose anyway. Have to see.

Gerreyn draft standing seems to be climbing. But like many of them around his mark he could go as early as early 20’s or as late at the 40’s.

I really do think its a raffle for the second half of the draft.. id not be surprised to see some name drift and other pop in draft as it only takes one club to really like what a player offers.

If its true we are looking at Dodson, Smith and Gerryn then id say all talls would be considered if and when they present value in our eyes.

I partially agree.
I think Dodson has real scope and his ceiling is very high. But traditionally guys late to footy don't do best as kpf because it requires a lot of footy iq. He's probably more likely to excel as a ruck or a kpd where he can use his athletic prowess plus his ability below his knees to impact. So it might be hard to keep him and Conway together-so do we believe Toby is crocked?

Edwards is different because he's not ready yet (even further back than Conway with body) and we might not think he's a bust but maybe we think he won't stay? It depends how far out you think Geelong would forward plan things like chasing Reid or a similar player in WA.

We definitely need talls as most of what we have are over 30 but id take a kpf and kpd before I took a ruck even though Dodson is the best ruck in the class. It does depend who is available though as we are picking late and sometimes you just must take talent regardless of position. What I will say is Geelong like unicorn rucks not lumberers and Dodson is a unicorn so IF we go ruck he's the type we like. But honestly someone like Richmond should probably grab him in the top 20 anyway.

Id imagine when they draft there is a who range of considerations. We hope he becomes a champ for the club bt also if we think about the draft as no longer being the pick and stay mechanism that it once was then its plausible what you say about Reid trade etc. Maybe he stays maybe he doesn’t …but the development years for interstate talls probably is tough especially if they have a bad run with injury. So does that make Dodson more of less likely or much the same as Edwards..

..so he is a guy we like..a guy that will take time… a guy who gives us a player who may develop into our #1 … and a player that probably appeals to potential suitors down the track.

What I don't get is why this has been floated. It must be tactical for this to have made it to the media.

There's no benefit to Geelong leaking it (unless it's a misdirect to distract clubs as to who we really want) as if you assume clubs like Sydney and Richmond are auctioning their 20s picks off other clubs have fr1s that are perceived to be more attractive than ours as an offer, so we can be outbid. I've still heard Geelong are pretty keen on hotton but he is probably going to be gone by the dogs pick and I doubt we can trade in earlier than that.

Had not seen this. Perhaps this is it.

Fair but zero chance gws aren't taking Smith with pressure gone. If we are bidding on academy guys I'd rather make it someone like Gillett who might not get matched.

There would not be many times that clubs have not matched. Its seems you would have to bid well overs…like with Marshall.. just how early would Brisbane not match. I think GWS match anything reasonable for Smith .. What woudl be reason for Gillett?

I think if we trade our FF the highest we will get after bids and matching is around 30 which in no way is worth the risk imo.

Better to trade a future second and try and get a pick around 30-35 which may be possible.

Future second won’t get you a 30-35 pick unless you traded it with pick 45.

I meant he matters in the sense that he has to be the long term replacement for kolo (who probably has 2-3 years left) but also has to be ready now if needed because otherwise if Henry or de koning are injured (or if de koning has to end up as 1st ruck) then we will be exposed. But I do agree with you that it's hard to get talls and so your depth is usually a kid who isn't ready or a D grade depth type.

Yeah the vfl forward line next year will be interesting that's for sure. I worry that neale will get a lot of afl games simply by default because we have no other option-I hope he doesn't get complacent and is still driven.
Have you seen Shannon Neale's Instagram? You can rest easy on that front. The kid is driven.

Maybe. I think it would not be primary …but it might be an extra consideration. We seem to like WA as happy hunting ground.

The primary would always be about getting the best kid on the list … and someone like Hump now ..would be not someone we would float. If he is happy then I doubt we would consider him in anyway now…

Carlton traded their future first plus future second (worth very little) for currently pick 14 (16-17 after bids). Their F1 would be worth similar to ours.

If there's a player we really like left on the board we will pay what's required but I'd be very surprised if anyone gives up a future first for a pick they ends up outside 25.

Gerryn Or Stumpf with our first pick is what I hope we hit.

Gerryn Looks like his skills will translate to AFL. Mobile, skillful and has a big presence not afraid to hit packs hard. Doubt he makes it to our first but would try move up a bit to snag him.

Stumpf has mercurial attributes that just feels like he could be that guy picked late that everyone wonders how that happened. Smashed the combine and beats players 1-1.

Clarke, jaques all look pedestrian to me and wouldn’t look at. Dodson also would be a complete waste.

Yeah that’s what I was getting at with my lazily written post. That perhaps there’s some smoke and mirrors on who our target is and if we start leaking info it works in our favour because other clubs might either scramble and reach or not try and leverage their pick and make a verbal agreement with a pick trade before the night if such and such is gone or still there. I know for a fact it’s been that we are going to try our best to trade into this year’s draft with our future first but the word I got was Hotton. Dodson seems a curve ball but it might also have merit.

Yeah i agree. I'm just saying I doubt we would put it out there public unless it was a misdirect-we tend to not leak a lot. I can see hotton as we like that type of utility. Dodson would be very interesting because as I've said he projects more as a ruck than a fwd/r2 or kpd to me and the latter types we need more. That said as I've been advocating from 2012 onwards when I was saying to take Grundy rucks hold their trade value so I'd rather have too many good rucks than not enough so I'm not against taking him at the right price.

I think we're looking at 3 National and 4 Rookie

I wouldn't draft a KPD in the national, but would in the Rookie

I'd be looking to grab two KPF types, one National and one Rookie, ideally one should be tall enough to be a potential ruck.

I don't have a vision for a mature aged recruit, I think if we do grab someone it is more likely to be someone with Close's profile and not Mannagh's profile.

It's 4 national and 3 rookie unless we decide to go 37/5 and not 38/4.
Henderson is not that dissimilar to close style wise.
Blakiston who we have been linked to might be the mature ruck as late in the ND or rookie.
