Here's 2024 Provisional AFL Draft Order

Cheers to Lore for their hard work in setting this up, and making it available for all users on BF to use and keep track of the picks ahead of the upcoming draft - and please practice patience grasshoppers if it's not updated in the immediate aftermath of completed trade

I'll also sticky this post to ensure it's easily accessible for discussion of our hypothetical trader

Also,

2024 Draft and Trade Period Key Dates

Oct 17 to Nov 8: Pick swap window
Nov 1 to Nov 8: Delisted free agency period
Nov 20-21: Telstra AFL Draft
Nov 22: Telstra Pre-Season Draft and Rookie Draft

Even if you expect a bid to be matched it is still worth doing it for a few different reasons

1 you like the player
2 make teams actually pay for players.

E.g If Richmond don't bid at 1 on Ashcroft i call utter bullshit

I really doubt they call him number1. 2,3,4 … is where I think it will land. Is he the best player in the draft? Probably although I don't think its as clear as it was with Reid.

Future second won’t get you a 30-35 pick unless you traded it with pick 45.

If thats the cost … to move up for the player we want …maybe we do it. They probably feel like the Fr2 gets used for our academy player anyway…. so its a possible way to just move that pick up.

As I dont think there is much between the players in that range …it would have to be player specific .. someone we really want or rate

Gerryn Or Stumpf with our first pick is what I hope we hit.

Gerryn Looks like his skills will translate to AFL. Mobile, skillful and has a big presence not afraid to hit packs hard. Doubt he makes it to our first but would try move up a bit to snag him.

Stumpf has mercurial attributes that just feels like he could be that guy picked late that everyone wonders how that happened. Smashed the combine and beats players 1-1.

Clarke, jaques all look pedestrian to me and wouldn’t look at. Dodson also would be a complete waste.

I’d be trading up for Gerreyn and would be happy to take either Stumpf or Nicholls with a later pick. Have one monster key forward and another more mobile, Cameron-like type.

I’ve cooled a bit on Jaques but still like Clarke. He has a lot of development in him. Has had to overcome long travel arrangements to get to where he is which says a bit about him too I think.

Like the look of a couple of WA guys late too. Hayes in particular has some nice attributes.

Have you seen much of Stumpf? I think he sounds an interesting prospect but have not seen much more than a glimpse of him playing forward.

No. He’s one if I’m taking him it’s on what I’ve read and his testing. Never seen him live.

Have seen Nicholls though and he looks ok as a key forward type with a late pick.

I'm not sure if it was Mitch Cleary who mentioned it when the retirement speculation started just prior to the GF, but Joe lives northern NSW on farmland in a pretty chill life - it was said his daily commute for training & such was 2hrs each way

When it was mentioned, it sounded a similar situation to say Cameron or Stanley on their farms, but they have no where near a 2hr commute to get to the club

Wonder if that lifestyle situation is why we were linked to him, even if it was a joke
Joe main house was in Byron Bay, but he also owned a small unit in Brisbane where he lived there when he had to when there wasn't a much of a turn around between commitments. His unit was very basic

With the drafting of Humphries and Edwards last year, any chance we are trying to position ourselves for the best chance to try and trade for Harley Reid in a couple of years time. More WA kids this year perhaps.

Look I don't think it's that specifically.
Generally when we don't take vic country kids we like SA and WA kids particularly those from rural areas as they are used to lots of travel and have dedication to make it and they adjust better to living in country areas like Geelong (whereas stacks of Vic Metro kids prefer to live in the city). You can also get some untapped talent outside the CTL and APS systems.

But that said IF we were targeting Reid unless we somehow had top 5 picks (unlikely) we would know that wce would ask for either Humphries or neale as part of the deal (and possibly Edwards too if he shows something). So it wouldn't be the worst idea to add more talls now if you want to cover the risk of losing one or two in a trade later on. But with the age of our KPPs we need talls regardless so I don't think a Reid scenario has too much bearing.

My hopes:

1. Trade our F1 to get into the first round this year for Hotton, Shanahan, one of the tall twins etc types that are talked about the 16-22 mark. Trading this pick makes it easier to get a RFA for free next year…

2. That if we do, we do not draft a first ruck for the third time in as many years in Dodson. It’s list mismanagement by definition as we can only play one of these, and renders the other two redundant. Waste of selections. We need a stop gap ruck more so than a third developing ruck on the list. A 29 yr old to bridge until Conway is 25 and ready to assume the role.

3. Gabriel Stumpf with one of our later picks. Think this guy could be a diamond.

4. Not to draft dud falcons for the sake of them being a falcon. Jaques falls into this category for mine.

I would prefer nicholls to stumpf if we go that way-i think he really has some high level IQ and is develop able-but I don't mind your ideas generally.

On the FA thing with 2 years of futures coming in bids for FAs will get matched regardless.

Not going to claim I’ve watched any junior footy this year as it seemed pointless with Smith coming in but the highlights of Dodson don’t exactly scream giving up a future pick that could be 10-15.

The kids only 202cm and can’t jump at all at the centre bounce in the footage. With the way the game is going that’s not going to cut it from 2027-2035 when we will be realistically expect him to play.

We need KP players both back and fwd so badly it’s not funny. Just cluster pick 4 and hope 1 hits.

If we pick him it will probably influenced by the combine but one hopes the club has seen a bit more than that. We do like guys who have done well in testing. I probably prefer others over Nicholls

Angus Clarke looks like a cats “type” player but not too many contests in those highlights.

I feel Geelong prioritise being able to ‘defend one on one’ by their defenders way more than other clubs do. We don’t really do the unaccountable back flanker role like 2/3rds of the league do. Even Stewert who plays that role is one of the best one on one players in the comp.
