Judd and Selwood ruined the expectations on first year players taken in the top 10. Could you imagine if we took Bartel at #8 now? His first two seasons he played 11 and 13 games and averaged just over 12 disposals in those years, there wouldn't have been the patience for him.

As much as I think Dodson is quality I find it difficult to believe he would be in our top 2 targets. Time will tell. Hotton I get.

Still think it’s very possible we trade with the Bombers for their top 2 picks. We just seem to be the logical club based on where their picks lie and what we can offer. We also have recent history trading with them.

Generally ..I hope we stay away from contracted guys. The more desirable the player …the less leverage we have and the cost will be higher. I find it frustrating that some of these players that like back themselves into a corner with long term contracts then expect to get traded ….



Liked LU in the champs … can run quick and long and gets a lot of the ball …. but he is a bit of a Siketa Meat by foot.

The club has spent the better part of the past two decades using late/rookie picks or trading in ruckmen. In recent years, with Conway and Edwards, it's shown a greater proclivity to using earlier picks to secure ruck talent. Draft Dodson would simply continue that recent approach.

Claiming it's an indication the club has lost faith in 19-year old and 21-year old ruckmen is hilarious.

Ok, so final bits of news I’ve got regarding the draft:

We are still knee deep in trading our 2025 F1 for Hotton or Dodson. It’s been confirmed Dodson is a genuine target. The logic is he might be able to come on faster than the other two rucks on our list and play more of a Blicavs role than a lumbering Conway. But my source is still convinced Hotton is the target if he’s there.

Jaques definitely in our sights. As is Davidson. Both could have an immediate impact next year according to recruiters at the club.

Outside of them he said Ivisic, Bice, Unwin. There are more names and bids etc but they’re the main ones he spoke about.

I’m pretty excited with the list of names to be honest. Feels like everyone is somewhat confused with how it will play out though. And a few nervous clubs because everyone’s rankings are different this year.

Irrelevant to Geelong but the major one starts at pick 2. North keeping their pick very hush on the premise they want a good return if they trade back. Crows look likely to take Draper but indicating they want Langford. Melbourne really want Langford or Jagga badly. It’s pretty fun for the draft’s top fifteen not to be just mapped out for us as it has been in previous seasons.

I still can’t fathom why we would spend significant draft capital on another developing ruck when only 1 in the future can play 1s. It renders edwards and Conway redundant wasted selections. If we gave up a future first I’d be pretty disappointed.

2 of Conway, Edward’s and Dodson would be failures assuming 1 comes on and the opportunity cost of what we could have selected makes it even. Worse. Would be the definition of list mismanagement imo.

I think Davidson would be a good pickup.

I’m not against drafting a ruck, it’s a priority imo. But trading up to draft a raw 18 year old ruckman isn’t going to solve any problems this year or next.

As for losing faith in young kids, I don’t question the talent, but it’s clear Conways body is a huge worry, 23 combined games in 3 years is far from ideal. And Edwards, like all young W.A kids are flight risks.

We can’t knock trading in ruckman too, our only 2 successful ruckman in 20 years have been from trades.

Perhaps not externally but we are a pretty patient club.

Agreed because if all are fit then someone is not even developing with ruck gametime in the reserves. Maybe they might think one could play key forward to support Neale when Cameron retires. I think not. Considering all I have heard are reports out of the club saying Conway is going to be a star and he destroys Stanley at training just seems this last injury setback has changed their thoughts drastically

Very very few if any but I’m not understanding how that’s relevant? I’m not arguing that at all. 18 year old, raw ruckman, Dodson, doesn’t solve our 2025-26 ruck issues which you’ve stated.

If we look at him and see a Luke Jackson clone I'd be all for trading the future first. That feels like a big call though.

Luke Jackson had Max Gawn and now Sean Darcy ahead of him though.

He's rarely had to be a number 1 ruckman...and when he has been, he hasn't reached the same heights.

He can have some superb moments (third quarter of the '21 GF comes to mind) but over the course of games it's just not his go at this point in his career.

On our side, we've got the corpse of Rhys Stanley and two other young developing rucks on the same development curve as Dodson. It's not exactly apples to apples.

Sure, if Conway or Edwards become a true #1 three-four years from now, then Dodson could be very handy in a Jackson esque role.

We've got more pressing issues though IMO. That move feels like something you do when the cake is completely set, and you're just looking for the icing, while our cake is still in the oven for mine.

When we're giving up first round picks at our stage of the rebuild, a second key forward or another potentially elite mid/forward feel like more pressing moves IMO.

If he somehow slips to 45, I'm all for it, but if we're giving a potential top 10 pick, then we'd want more than yet another developmental ruckman IMO.

We can do whatever we want. But you risk imbalancing a list by taking too many of one type. You also then have the issue of having to play 3 ruck in the VFL and try to develop them effectively.

Anyway, probably all moot. Can debate it after Dobson is drafted by us if that happens.

He is not even remotely close to the athlete Jackson is and his skills are even worse. Personally have him outside my top 35 rankings. Think he is getting talked up more because this is a very poor draft class for rucks.

Jackson ran a 6:21 2km and Dodson ran a 7:06

He's undersized like Jeremy Goddard was at wafl which might be why he hasn't been picked. But he is a very good player and I think he could play a role at afl level.

Frankly if we are trading a future 1st I'd rather a kpf like shanahan than a ruck.

I don't disagree with some of your points however if we did draft Dodson we will have to look at how we develop these guys in their primary position. I'm not worried about Stanley as he will get the last year cegs treatment (ie will play afl or be rested won't be in vfl much) but if you have Conway Edwards and Dodson in vfl a couple of them will have to play fwd and develop that way. Now the vfl fwd line lacks talls so it's an option but if you take Dodson you would want to be confident he can develop as a fwd as well as a ruck and have versatility like blicavs.

We could do this and then rookie a cheap mature ruck cover for next year (which we need) but I would personally just cover a cheap backup now and see what rucks are available on the trade market next year.

I wouldn't be doing that trade every draft. But the evenness of this one together with the issue of next years being heavily compromised gives me confidence that a trade with the Bombers is a goer. To walk away with 2 players in the top 35 picks rather than one next year in the mid 20's seems a good deal to me. Particularly if you rate this draft class higher than next years which most do.

Our record of drafting rucks is horrible. That is probably been our worst drafting position over the years. Our only decent rucks over recent years are players like Barnes, Ottens and Stanley all from other clubs and a couple of them weren't even traded in as rucks. We have drafted players like Hooper, Chambers and Street. Doesn't hold out hope

I suspect the club will prioritise Conway in the ones and have Edwards/Dodson sharing the ruck in the twos. It's probably highly unlikely all three will be fit at the same time anyway.
