Stupid question regarding JUH - IF we traded for him, what role is he playing for us next season?

  • Ollie Henry has recently signed a 2-yr extension through to 2027
  • Jezza Cameron is in the process of adding a second year to he's already triggered contract extension, which will take him through to 2027
  • Shannon Neale is close to signing a 3-yr contract extension through to 2028

Then add in that Dangerfield has another 12 months on his most recent contract and looks likely to play that Gary Rohan type role up forward

So where does JUH fit in all that?

You don't recruit a 22yo for 1 year though. If you consider the below it's pretty easy to justify.
  • OHenry is a 3rd tall
  • Cameron will be 32 in a week
  • Neale is still unproven (although I'm optimistic)
  • Danger will retire end of next year and will be in the midfield half the time anyway
That's not to say we should chase him, or are even interested. But fitting him in is not the issue.

It will be an issue for the two years we have Cameron

Who cares. Get him anyway. Much more talented then all the players listed with the exception of Cameron. In fact he is probably a similar talent level to Cameron.

My preferred position is to target out of contract players because as we saw with Oliver..you can go almost all the way but not quite score a home run when they do not like the deal… Just like with Smith maybe we keep him on speed dial and see what happens. Honestly think this probably goes nowhere while the Dogs have a choice..

It will be the same as Oliver. They won't release him. But in 2026 (if we can't get cadman then) who knows.

It's not really. Cameron is that mobile and able to play up the ground (unlike most key forwards) that you can play them all. But jamarra needs to physically and mentally get fit for afl first which he isn't imo.

Yeah a lot of Bulldogs fans fail to reevaluate things with the benefit of hindsight. They're set on that even after everything that has happened, we could have gotten more for Stringer. Ultimately there's a reason only one club was interested in the end. From memory even Geelong were keen on him early on but decided not to go there.

Anyway, with Jamarra, I'm hopeful we'll turn things around with him. In my uneducated opinion I think he's less unintelligent (ala Stringer) and more just someone who is very impressionable, we've just got to hope it's the mature heads like Bontempelli, Naughton and co that are the examples Jamarra follows and not the people he currently socializes with. Who knows though.

From memory Geelong were keen but as the story goes he turned up late to meet with us and then we weren't interested after that. The rest of what you say I agree with and I think Jamarra should stay where he is and turn it around.

If we're in win now mode, is that the best value. There is a cost in over investing in an area.

Not quite sure what is our area of need is right now, even where we are weak in an area we still have someone worthwhile in the spot. For someone to be worth chasing at this point they'd have to be pretty blue chip

If we are in win now mode the best value is to get an elite ruck or an elite mid (ie Rowell or butters). But we won't get the first one (as there's too few of them) and if we can't get the 2nd jamarra is worth looking at.

The nature of the behind closed door issues matter when considering if we should pursue a player on indefinite leave.

With little public information on what the actual issue is, how can you assess the risk / reward?

As much as Jeremy Cameron is our CHF.. he is a very unique player that as much as his Key Forward he can play that style as a utility in that Forward line... His very athlete and can play on the flank that can pick the ball up with ease on the ground...
So putting JUH in there, it can definitely work...

Not what I've heard. Baz wanted out of dogs for many reasons

Forgive me if I'm a little dubious about what you've heard...given you said this last season:

"Heard today from 2 separate sources that no club will go near smith as he's not well so to speak. Dogs will have to throw in plenty to offload him it seems"

Did Baz leave because he's not well, because some of his teammates aren't well, or because his club's not well?

No doubt Baz will be spruiking how good it is to be at the GFC to JUH.
That'll be the least of our problems IMO.

I actually have no doubt he wants to come. Grew up wanting to play for the club, local kid, GFC's track record of getting players right etc etc. His relationship with Baz is just the cherry on top.

I just feel it'll be the same as the Oliver situation. A club who aren't in turmoil, but will likely be looking to make a statement, particularly with a bit of animosity leftover from the Smith deal.

On the contrary, if the Dogs don't give a s**t about any of that like the Dees, and are happy to send him our way, then we have to wonder if we're really making a great decision there.

Low hanging fruit to link him to Geelong imo. Journos/media know it will get engagement which it has with people blowing up on socials and radio already.

I'm not averse to following smoke where there is fire, but do they have to make it our fault?
Fox firing up the tin hat brigade with the headline Suuuuuuuuuuurely they can't afford the former No.1 pick?!
Ralphy follows up, cue more social media spite. The cats are eating the dogs, they're eating the dogs!
Then admits there are a number of teams into him, contracted until 26, and Sam Power will go hard.
All BS until proven.

One difference between the Dees and Doggies mentalities could be the contracts Oliver/JUH are on.

Oliver had many years left to run on his contract.

JUH has one year left after this one and if he makes it obvious he wants to be traded, the Doggies might just move him on to wipe their hands of him (assuming our offer isn't taking the mickey), instead of keeping a guy on 900k that doesn't want to be there, might not even be playing and will likely ask to leave when OOC after one more season.

I'm not sure what it's like in the locker rooms with JUH and his teammates but if a few issues are going on that aren't resolved... I won't be surprised to see them move him on.

Could go many ways.

Their willingness hand off their early picks for minimal gain left him a one player rebuild
You mean Kelly or like last year with Baker etc.

Do you think they pulled the right lever drafting Reid? Probably could have gotten a swag of picks if they had traded it.

This seems a very strange state of affairs for WC. Would this be the worst they have been since 1987.. id have thought.

People compared JUH early on to Franklin because they are both indigenous players who are left footed, but the more I saw of JUH I saw more of Cameron in him.

Who better to teach JUH to be the next Cameron or better, then, well, Jezza himself.

Plus we could end up with Jezza on the wing doing a Richo and nearly winning a Brownlow.

Good point. I believe if the Dogs wanted more for BSmith then they should have traded him 12 months earlier when they knew he wanted out. I doubt the same approach will work with JUH but they will get more trading him while contracted and they know that they only have him for 25 and 26. I guess it gets down to …what our offer would be.

Id prefer for us to put our efforts into Rowell but in the end ..a lot gets down to the indvidual player. If a top line player says "I want to play for you" then, just like Oliver , I suspect we will see the wagons roll again.

Did Richo play wing? Didn't know that
