The GIANTS are delighted to announce the appointment of Adam Kingsley as the club’s next AFL head coach.

As a former Premiership and Best and Fairest winner with Port Adelaide, where he played 170 games, Kingsley quickly moved into coaching following his playing career, immediately taking up assistant coaching roles with Port Adelaide and then St Kilda. After eight years with the Saints, Kingsley joined Richmond as assistant coach in 2019 where he played a leading role in the Tigers’ last two Premierships.

GIANTS Chief Executive Officer David Matthews said Kingsley's appointment marked the next chapter in the evolution of the football club. “On behalf of the Board and our entire organisation, I’m thrilled to confirm Adam Kingsley as our new head coach,” Mr Matthews said. “After a thorough and considered selection process, Adam’s vision for the club, our players and our people made him the standout candidate for the job. Adam has outstanding values that align with the GIANTS and with 16 years’ coaching experience he is an exceptional tactical coach, a strong, clear communicator, and someone who brings people together. In our 11 years in the competition we have undoubtedly become a successful club with a fantastic culture and a great playing list. But we haven’t been satisfied with our recent results. We - and Adam - believe success isn’t far away and we’re thrilled to have him lead us into our next chapter as a club. This is an incredibly exciting day for our club and Adam's appointment will not only take our playing group and football department forward but will help continue to grow our game across NSW and the ACT. We look forward to welcoming Adam, his wife Nadine and children Cayla, Ethan and Raf to the GIANTS family.”

Mr Matthews also paid tribute to caretaker coach Mark McVeigh. "We thank Mark for his efforts as interim senior coach and the tireless work he has contributed to our program since taking over in round 10,” Mr Matthews said. “It’s a difficult job to come in as caretaker coach but he attacked the role with fresh ideas and sought to improve our players, staff and program at every step. Mark is a person of the highest integrity and character, and he has always put the club first. He was steadfast in leaving the program ready for whoever would be taking over.”

Following an extensive interview process, Kingsley was deemed the best fit for the GIANTS by the club’s interview panel that consisted of Mr Matthews, Chairman Tony Shepherd AO, Football Director Jimmy Bartel and General Manager of Football Jason McCartney. Kingsley said he was honoured to have the opportunity to coach the club for the next three years. “This is an incredibly exciting opportunity,” he said. “It’s a privilege and an honour to be the next senior coach of the GIANTS. I’ve been clear in my aspirations to become a senior coach and over the last 16 years I’ve continued to learn and develop to the point now where I’m absolutely ready to take the next step in my coaching career. This is a club which has built a strong culture from the ground up in just a few short years. In just 11 years the GIANTS have made multiple preliminary finals, and a Grand Final, and while the ultimate success has eluded the club, it’s clear the building blocks are in place. It's clear the players, staff, members and fans are hungry for success, and we’re going to drive each other to get to where we want to go. I believe in this club and what we can achieve together.”

Kingsley played 170 games for Port Adelaide between 1997 and 2006 and was a member of the club’s inaugural team as well as their first Premiership in 2004. He won the Power’s club champion award in just his second season. In 2007, he became an assistant coach at Port Adelaide, a position in which he stayed in until the end of 2010. Kingsley joined St Kilda at the end of the 2010 season as an assistant coach before moving to Richmond in 2019.

Brent Daniels is going to be a massive part of Kingsley's game plan I feel! Keep him fit and I can see him comfortably sitting in the top 5 in our best and fairest
Top 5 would be a pretty incredible season for him, if he can finish top 10 I think thats a really really good result. Means he's been durable and taken that next step in his development.

GWS are understood to have sacked newly-appointed head of development coach Robbie Chancellor after his arrest for drug possession.

Reports from earlier this month revealed Chancellor was found with a white substance in Sydney late last year, with the Giants coach admitting to police he had purchased cocaine prior to his arrest. According to 7 News Melbourne, Chancellor has since been relieved of his duties at GWS, ending his short tenure with the New South Wales side.

The GWS Giants have sacked their head of development after he was busted for buying cocaine. 7NEWS reporter Tom Browne revealed the details. “The Giants have now parted company with the head of player development - important role - Robbie Chancellor - just three months after his appointment,” Browne said. “The Giants are now hunting for a replacement for that head of development role.”

Chancellor - a former coach of the Western Jets in Victoria - only moved to Sydney in September to take up the position with the Sydney club.

Well, that settles the discussion here about what the club will do.

Not good, but at least it's been dealt with before the start of the season.

Interesting article with insights on Adam
Pretty cool article not something that we get to see a whole lot of afl media. Couple things that are noticable.

  • "It's on this particular week that the Giants onballers learn the startling revelation that first-year rookie Jason Gillbee replaced all of his water intake with milk three years ago." I've never heard something so insane in my life.
  • Bedford is considered a lock for round one,. Not too surprsing but good to hear he's playing well
  • While the diminutive Darcy Jones – the No.21 pick at last November's NAB AFL Draft – is also firming as a round one bolter, having excelled this summer. This is quite interesting and surprising, really didn't think he'd play a whole lot this year and especially not early because of his frame but he must be really impressing
  • Perryman is spending more time as a pure midfielder, Lachie Whitfield and Lachie Ash have both been training across half-back, Kennedy is being trialled forward, while veteran Callan Ward has also been shifted into attack. Perryman inside mid is good to hear as is Ash at halfback, Whitfield back to half back is cool, no doubt he'll be fantastic there but interested to see who takes the wing spot if Kennedy is forward and Ash is back, Ward up forward is interesting he's always been a good set shot but never really thought he showed great ability as a forward.
  • Finn Callaghan was highlighted during the week at training for a side-step out of trouble and a long left-footed goal having burst out of a stoppage. Love to see this.

I have high hopes (to the point where I got him in my first draft SC team) because he brings such a element of difference to our midfield mix. It's the same reason Daniels has excelled in the middle despite being average at best up forward.

I would imagine Kennedy and Ward are competing for the "pressure forward" position to lock the ball in longer term if we're still going with a tall-ish forward line. The common mix these days is two tall forwards (Hogan, Cadman), the second/resting ruck (Flynn?), a true small forward (Bedford), a resting mid/HFF (whoever's in rotations), and a pressure forward (Kennedy?) that can patch up the lack of pressure from the three talls.

He might be the answer to your question on the previous point - sounds like there's a wing spot for the taking, and IIRC Finn was well-regarded athletically.

Wing might be done by comittee instead of having 2 set and forget wingers? Whitfield, Kelly, Perryman, Callaghan and Kennedy might all take turns throughout the game as wingers, couple others have the chance to go through their as well if they get a game.

I like that Adam is shaking up the club and bringing a lot of new ways to train and educate the team. Adam has got a coaching team that he wants, and they all seem to be very experienced and fully committed to Adam’s vision. The “Giants Man” and the “Edgers” concepts should hopefully result in our team playing as a team and winning the close games.

400m schoolboy star.

And I agree he shapes as the wing answer.
From memory,at the combine he ran a terrific 2km as well, either sub 6 or very close to. (that is a horribly constructed sentence, but you get my point)

I'm hoping Riccardi gets first dibs at CHF, and not Cadman. #1 pick invites blanket media inquest, neither Ugle Hagan or Darcy have started straight up at the Dogs. Jake has never quite been at the races, (playing on a wing!!), but give him a go to see if anything happens in a quicker team.

I can’t see how Ward can play as a forward. Has neither speed or endurance.
Yeah I don't see it unless he's just weirdly really elusive on the lead and is able to shake his defender that way but even that seems a stretch, defensively I don't see how he's able to make much on an impact
