Remind me, Nikki - don't Geelong HAVE to use a first round selection in the draft in 2017? *subject to the AFL changing the rules once again

I'm pretty sure that's the case; and if so, how the heck will they manage that while bringing in Ablett as well?

I assume they're hoping to get compo for Motlop and Menzel and use that to help trade for a first rounder. Other clubs should bleed them dry in return for a first rounder knowing they have to get it done.

And what the heck is the punishment for failing anyway? Nothing I presume...
AFL changed the minimum 1st round draft picks used during the last trade period that allowed the Cats to trade their to Carlton as part of the Tuohy trade & kept this in place to 2019.

We were doing fine until the AFL decided to allow Geelong to break the rules and not punish them and make up a new rule that it wouldn't be implemented until the following year. Once Carlton had that pick from Geelong they never should have been allowed to have, our stance was worthless. The problem though this year is that Geelong still have no currency and are looking to break these rules again because the AFL let them last time so they feel entitled to do it again.

Do we even have an official punishment for breaking the rule yet?

I reckon they should get rid of the limit just so I can laugh while teams trade away first rounder after first rounder and their future along with it.

With Greenwood and Mcrouch, Rocky isn't a need and possibly more of a hinderance given Dons game plan.
Yep fair call. Certainly much less of a need than he seemed a year ago. Gibbs too, but at least his game style and flexibility suits us better

You lose your 1st round pick... that you have already traded. ;)

What!!? Let's not muddy the already murky waters any further.

From The future-pick puzzle: Trading rules explained :
Those rules introduced last season state that clubs must make at least two first-round selections in each four-year period or face restrictions from trading any further first-round draft picks and that clubs can trade one year in the future only.
So for a club violating this rule during a draft, the penalty is ... it has to use its first round pick from that year

Rowie and Bicks were talking about Gibbs today and said they saw him and had a chat about things.
Apparently they got the vibe from Gibbs that Adelaide might not have been showing much interest in him this year and he was unsure where he stood this year.

From what I'm hearing, it's being discussed behind closed doors rather than involving any media, which is much more professional by all parties.

Don't expect to hear anything til agreement has been reached.

Were you thinking of Port or Geelong when writing of this? They both seem to think each year that they are just one more top-up player short of a flag.

You would think these professionals would know that he's hardly going to tell them what's going on, because guess why? They announce it on the radio

Are you suggesting they are making policy on the run....no!

What will our pick be if we win 18? by the time they use it pick 21.
Reckon thats around the mark, maybe a fourth back for edwards

This obsession with saying a pick is worth 3-4 less because of academy bidding is becoming ridiculous. The pick is the pick, it's value is set at the trade table.

Delidio hadn't had many issues until this year?

Obviously that's 1 year wrong, but after the same amount of seasons that Bryce has played, Deledio was on almost exactly the same number of games. Bryce still has Deledio's next 2 years ahead of him, but make no mistake, Did's was near exactly where Gibbs finds himself right now.

Why wouldn’t it be worth less?

Clubs know whether pick 12 gets you the 12th best player or the 15th best player

Clubs might have an educated guess as to what the academy clubs will do, but the obsession with believing that every pick is worth 3 less is pure ignorance. "Player X is worth 8, but 8 is now 11, so we need 5". It's just simpleness. What % of picks in the first 2 rounds are actually pushed back by academy selections?

I would imagine they’ll have a view on the quality of players up for bid

If there are a few Hoppers, Mills and Henney types, then you know they will go super high.

Well, pick 18 is pick 18 at trade but it becomes say 21 so the pick has inevitably decreased
