Do people really think that these people flee a war and persecution, travel through countries like Iran, Syria and Iraq with bugger all money, give everything they have to criminals to escape camps, take ridiculous risks at sea, and risk indefinite detention (and much worse)... to 'abuse' centrelink?

Yes. That is a big part of why they travel across the globe. If it was just about securing their "safety" then they could stop at the first safe refuge they come across. But no, our welfare system makes it worth the effort to "give everything they have to criminals to escape camps, take ridiculous risks at sea, and risk indefinite detention". When they arrive they have infinate knoweldge of how our welfare system works and that the charade of "processing" is window dressing to appease a horrified Austarlian public. I hate all immigration into Australia full stop, here in Perth the population is exploding so quickly on the back of immigration our infrastructure can't cope and all of our camping/fishing/4wd/wilderness spots are getting locked up all over the place. Our city sprawls for about 300km. If forced however I think immigration should definately be biased towards those who are more likely to assimilate into our culture. There are a miriad of negative examples all over the earth which demonstrate what happens if they dont. Gillard is a fool changing the predominant demographic profile of immigrants. A nutcase.

i never said **** off were full, all i said maybe immigration has run its course, you cant have continued immigration forever, we have been a very generous over the last 60 years, with i believe 6 million migrants arriving, but now would be the time to stop so the population doesnt get out of hand, i dont want to be another bangladesh, where you cant go anywhere without a mass of people about , ( if you respond please dont twist what i say) ps rednecks are in americas south, not australia thanks

I was born here. I see you subscibe to the Bob Brown "one world" without borders theory, good for you. Personally I dont. I believe those residing in Australia should definately have a say on who is or isn't able to join us here. A free for all as you seem to endorse will simply increase our population and erode living standards. I believe governments primary obligation should be to maintain living standards of its own population.

I was talking about immigration in general, and the adverse effect of rampant population growth. I think Australian culture - playing cricket down the park, fishing, camping - even the good old aussie backyard are all being lost because of population growth driven by immigration. So many of our freedoms, open space and wilderness experiences, health services and a wealth of other things that we take for granted are being lost. I see though we cant have this discussion without you bring out the race card though. Damn shame imo

If we must have immigration then I admit I'd rather immigrants that come from cultural demographics in line with our own, to avoid more of the cultural clashes we have seen here and all over the world - time and time again. Let's make it challenging by excluding Carbon Lie, the $50bn NBN no-one's buying, Pink Batts, School Halls, racking up $200bn debt in just 4 years, inability to deliver a surplus despite being in a mining boom, the live export disaster, stuffing up the mining tax, the Pokies lie, and the unholy Alliance with the Greens. You haven't really mounted a convincing argument to carry the day on this. Two half-baked assumptions, that somehow new migrants won't work but will sponge off welfare for generations, and some vague complaint about migrants crowding up your favourite fishing/camping spots. I'm not convinced either of these are genuine reasons to change public policy in immigration.
